- Rampur · RudrapurThe road turns north towards the Kumaon foothills, through the sugarcane and paddy belt of the Terai.
- HaldwaniLast big plains town — fuel, lunch and an ATM stop before the hills.
- Kathgodam → NainitalThe railhead and the start of the climb: about 35 km of bends via Ranibagh and Jeolikote. Drop at your hotel in Mallital, Tallital or on the Mall Road, or anywhere in Bhimtal or Bhowali.

Road tips for Delhi to Nainital
Leave Delhi by 5–6 am
Truck traffic builds through the day around Ghaziabad and Moradabad. A 5–6 am start gets you to Haldwani by late morning and up the hill by early afternoon — and the Kathgodam climb is done in daylight.
Two small fees in Uttarakhand
Since 15 February 2026 out-of-state cars pay Uttarakhand’s green cess (₹80 for light vehicles) on entry, and Nainital collects its own town entry fee at the Barapathar and Tallital barriers (₹110 a car when it was last revised in April 2025). Both are added to your quote at actuals, with the NH-9 tolls.
Mall Road rules in season
In May, June and October the district restricts cars on the Mall Road in the evening, and parking on the Mall is restricted in summer and autumn. Tell us your hotel — the driver drops you at the closest point and parks at Tallital, Mallital Flats or your hotel’s own parking.
Kainchi Dham, Bhimtal and Mukteshwar
Kainchi Dham is about 17 km past Nainital via Bhowali, Bhimtal sits on the climb from Kathgodam, and Mukteshwar is about 50 km away. Add any of them to the drop or keep the same car for local sightseeing — we quote it as one fare. Around the 15 June foundation day (and on crowded weekends) private cars stop at parking in Bhimtal or Bhowali and visitors take the shuttle; we check the rules the day before.
Coming by train?
If you take the Shatabdi or an overnight train to Kathgodam or Haldwani, book only the hill leg: a car waits at the station with your name and takes you to Nainital, Bhimtal or Kainchi.
Monsoon caution
Mid-July to August brings landslides on hill highways. We watch road advisories and move your start time or route when needed — no extra charge for a route change we suggest.

Questions travellers ask
What is the taxi fare from Delhi to Nainital?
One-way fares start around ₹3,699 for a hatchback, ₹4,199 for a sedan, ₹5,399 for an Ertiga, ₹6,199 for a Kia Carens and ₹7,299 for an Innova Crysta. A 12-seater Tempo Traveller starts around ₹14,299. Tolls, parking, Uttarakhand’s green cess and Nainital’s entry fee are extra at actuals; peak dates cost more.
How long does Delhi to Nainital take by car?
About 7–8 hours door to door with a breakfast and a lunch stop: roughly 5 hours of highway to Haldwani and 1.5 hours for the 35 km climb from Kathgodam. Friday evenings, long weekends and May–June can add 1–2 hours.
Which is the best route from Delhi to Nainital by road?
NH-9 via Ghaziabad, Hapur, Garhmukteshwar and Moradabad, then Rampur, Rudrapur and Haldwani, and up the hill road from Kathgodam through Jeolikote. There is no expressway on this corridor yet, so an early start matters more than the route choice.
Is the Nainital to Delhi taxi fare the same?
Yes. The same one-way fares apply from any Nainital, Bhimtal or Bhowali hotel to anywhere in Delhi NCR, including IGI Airport and the railway stations.
Can I book a Delhi–Nainital–Delhi round trip?
Yes. Round trips and tours are billed per kilometre driven (a sedan is ₹12/km, 250 km daily minimum) plus ₹400 a night driver allowance. A 3–4 day trip with Bhimtal, Kainchi Dham and Mukteshwar in the same car is the most popular plan.
Can the taxi pick me up from Delhi airport?
Yes, from IGI T1, T2 or T3. The driver waits at arrivals with your name and tracks your flight. Land before noon to finish the hill climb before dark; a later flight is better with a night in Delhi or Haldwani.
Can I add Kainchi Dham or Jim Corbett to the trip?
Kainchi Dham is about 17 km beyond Nainital via Bhowali, so it fits easily into the drop or the next day. Jim Corbett (Ramnagar) is about 65 km from Nainital by the Kaladhungi road — tell us and we quote the whole circuit as one fare.
Do I need a 4×4 for Nainital in winter?
Usually not. The Kathgodam–Nainital road stays open most of the winter; after fresh snow (mostly late December to February) the upper town can be slippery, and our driver carries chains when snow is forecast. We confirm road status the day before.
