Rajasthan Trip Plan for 5 Days: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer or Udaipur

A 5-day Rajasthan trip works best as one of two triangles. The desert route is Jaipur (2 days), Jodhpur (1 day), Jaisalmer (2 days), about 620 km plus an overnight train back. The lakes route is Jaipur (2 days), Pushkar (half day), Udaipur (2 days), about 420 km. Do not try all four cities.

Short answer: A 5-day Rajasthan trip works best as one of two triangles. The desert route is Jaipur (2 days) → Jodhpur (1 day) → Jaisalmer (2 days), about 620 km of driving plus an overnight train back. The lakes route is Jaipur (2 days) → Pushkar (half day) → Udaipur (2 days), about 420 km. Both start with the 06:10 Shatabdi from Delhi or a flight into Jaipur. Do not try to fit all four cities into five days; you will spend most of it in a car.

Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)

  • Variant A (desert): Day 1–2 Jaipur, Day 3 drive to Jodhpur (about 335 km, 6 h), Day 4 drive to Jaisalmer (about 285 km, 5 h) and camp at Sam, Day 5 Jaisalmer fort and havelis, overnight train 12468 Leelan Express back to Jaipur (about 12 h 40 m).
  • Variant B (lakes): Day 1–2 Jaipur, Day 3 Pushkar then drive to Udaipur (about 150 km + 280 km), Day 4 Udaipur city, Day 5 Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur or fly out.
  • Getting in: 12015 Ajmer Shatabdi, New Delhi 06:10 → Jaipur 10:35 daily; or fly to Jaipur.
  • Best months: November to February; avoid 20 Dec–5 Jan unless booked early.
  • Must-book ahead: Sam dunes camp, Jaisalmer and Udaipur hotels, train tickets (open 60 days before travel on IRCTC).
  • Budget guide: a car with driver for 5 days, mid-range hotels and entry fees usually lands between ₹18,000 and ₹35,000 per person for two people travelling together; see our Rajasthan trip cost guide.

Which 5-day Rajasthan route should you choose?

Rajasthan’s four big tourist cities sit in a rough square: Jaipur in the east, Jodhpur in the centre-west, Jaisalmer far west on the Pakistan border, and Udaipur in the south. Jaipur to Jaisalmer is about 560 km; Jaipur to Udaipur about 395 km. In five days you can comfortably cover three cities on one side of the square, not all four.

Choose the desert route (Variant A) if you want sand dunes, a night in a tented camp, the blue houses of Jodhpur and the living fort at Jaisalmer. It involves more driving and one overnight train, and it is best from November to February when the desert is cool. Choose the lakes route (Variant B) if you are travelling with parents or small children, want shorter drives, or are visiting between March and October when Udaipur and the Aravalli hills are far more bearable than the desert.

Couples usually pick Udaipur; groups of friends usually pick Jaisalmer. Families with school-age children are split, and the deciding factor is often whether a night under canvas sounds like an adventure or a chore. If you have seven or more days, our longer Rajasthan itinerary joins both triangles into a loop.

Variant A: Jaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer in 5 days

Day Where Plan Travel
Day 1 Jaipur Arrive 10:35 by Shatabdi. Afternoon: City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal from the street, Johari Bazaar. Sunset at Nahargarh. Delhi → Jaipur 4 h 25 m by train
Day 2 Jaipur Amer Fort at 08:00 opening, Panna Meena stepwell, Jaigarh, Jal Mahal photo stop, Albert Hall, Patrika Gate. Evening free or Chokhi Dhani. Local car, about 60 km
Day 3 Jaipur → Jodhpur Leave 07:00. Lunch stop at Pushkar or Ajmer if you take the Ajmer road. Reach Jodhpur by 14:00. Afternoon: Mehrangarh (open till 17:00), Jaswant Thada, sunset from the fort ramparts. Evening: Clock Tower and Sardar Market. About 335 km, 6 h with a stop
Day 4 Jodhpur → Jaisalmer Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell at 07:30, then drive. Stop at Osian temples (about 65 km) if time allows. Reach Jaisalmer by 13:30, check in at a Sam dunes camp (about 40 km west), camel ride, folk dance, dinner at camp. About 285 km + 40 km, 5.5–6 h
Day 5 Jaisalmer Back to town by 09:00. Jaisalmer Fort (entry free; palace museum ₹50 for Indians), Jain temples, Patwon ki Haveli, Gadisar Lake at sunset. Overnight train or late flight out. 12468 Leelan SF Express to Jaipur, about 12 h 40 m, daily

Road distances are approximate Google Maps figures and fort fees are from 2026 travel listings (Triveni Cabs Jaisalmer guide, checked 30 October 2026); check the exact fee at the gate. Mehrangarh charges ₹200 for Indian adults and is open 09:00–17:00 (CaptureATrip 2026 guide, checked 30 October 2026).

The weak point of Variant A is Day 3, a long drive for one afternoon in Jodhpur. If you can add a sixth day, give it to Jodhpur. If you cannot, consider the 26482 Vande Bharat from Jaipur (it leaves Jaipur at about 19:00 and reaches Jodhpur at 23:20, not on Tuesdays), which gives you a full Day 3 in Jaipur and a full Day 4 in Jodhpur, though you lose the Pushkar stop and arrive late. Our Jodhpur to Jaisalmer road guide covers the stops between the two cities, and our Jaisalmer 3-day plan shows what you gain with more time there.

Variant B: Jaipur, Pushkar and Udaipur in 5 days

Day Where Plan Travel
Day 1 Jaipur Same as Variant A: old city, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, Nahargarh sunset. Delhi → Jaipur by train or flight
Day 2 Jaipur Amer, Jaigarh, Jal Mahal, Albert Hall, bazaars. Local car
Day 3 Jaipur → Pushkar → Udaipur Leave 07:00, reach Pushkar by 10:00 (about 150 km). Brahma temple, ghats, two hours in the bazaar. Lunch, then drive via Bhilwara and Chittorgarh to Udaipur by 19:00. About 150 km + 280 km, 8 h total driving
Day 4 Udaipur City Palace (₹300 Indian adult), Jagdish temple, Lake Pichola boat to Jag Mandir, Saheliyon ki Bari, Sajjangarh sunset, 19:00 Dharohar dance show at Bagore ki Haveli (₹90 Indian adult; tickets from 18:15). Local car and boat
Day 5 Udaipur → Kumbhalgarh → Ranakpur → Udaipur Leave 07:00. Kumbhalgarh fort 09:00–11:30 (₹40 Indian), Ranakpur Jain temple after 12:00 (tourist hours roughly 12:00–17:00), back by 18:00 for a night flight or train. About 210–230 km loop, 5–6 h driving

Fees are from EaseIndiaTrip (City Palace, updated December 2025), Swagachi (Bagore ki Haveli) and CaptureATrip (Kumbhalgarh), all checked 30 October 2026; Ranakpur charges vary by source, so carry cash and check at the counter. Day 3 is long; if you prefer, skip Pushkar and take the direct Jaipur–Udaipur road via Chittorgarh, which our Jaipur to Udaipur guide covers, including a stop at Chittorgarh Fort. Our Udaipur 3-day plan expands Days 4 and 5.

How do you get into and out of Rajasthan for a 5-day trip?

From Delhi, the 12015 Ajmer Shatabdi (New Delhi 06:10 → Jaipur 10:35, daily) is the standard start; it gives you a full afternoon on Day 1. The 26482 Vande Bharat (Delhi Cantt 15:10 → Jaipur 19:00, not Tuesdays) suits people who work a half day first. Timetables are from ConfirmTkt and RailYatri, checked 30 October 2026; Indian Railways revises them a few times a year.

From Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chennai, fly into Jaipur and out of Udaipur or Jaisalmer rather than looping back; one-way fares on different airlines are usually only a little more than a return, and you save a full day. Jaisalmer airport has limited winter-season flights (mainly to Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai, roughly October to March), so check before you build the plan around it. Udaipur’s Dabok airport has year-round flights to the metros.

From Gujarat and Maharashtra by train, Udaipur is the natural entry and the 5-day plan runs in reverse: Udaipur → Pushkar → Jaipur, leaving from Jaipur by the evening Vande Bharat or Double Decker to Delhi.

What should you book in advance?

  • Train tickets: IRCTC bookings open 60 days ahead. Shatabdi chair-car seats and 3A berths on the Leelan Express sell out early in December and around Diwali (8 November 2026).
  • Sam dunes camp: most camps run October to March, and the better ones are full on weekends and all of 20 December–5 January. Under the 2026 rules, access to the open dunes after sunset is restricted and many camps now accept only families and couples (Patrika, 2 December 2025); our guide to the Sam dunes sunset rules explains what that means for your evening.
  • Udaipur lake-facing hotels: the rooms with the Pichola view are a small share of the city’s stock and go first.
  • Jaipur monument tickets: buy on the day. Amer Fort is ₹200 for Indians and ₹100 each for Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh and Albert Hall since 1 January 2026 (Zee News Rajasthan); the composite ticket is now valid for 10 days.
  • Car and driver: a sedan is fine for two or three people; a Toyota Innova or similar for four to six with luggage. Agree the itinerary and the inclusions (fuel, tolls, driver’s stay, state taxes) in writing.

How much does a 5-day Rajasthan trip cost?

For two people sharing, a private car for five days, three-star hotels, one dunes camp night and all monument fees usually comes to about ₹18,000–₹25,000 per person in the November–February season, rising to ₹30,000–₹35,000 with heritage hotels, and more still over New Year. Solo travellers pay noticeably more per head because the car cost is not shared. Our Rajasthan trip cost guide breaks this down by hotel band and day count, and our heritage package cost guide covers the palace-hotel end.

Our packaged versions, the 3 nights 4 days Rajasthan vacation and the longer Padharo Rajasthan, are priced on request because the hotel band makes such a difference; send your dates and we will quote. A 20% token confirms a booking and the balance is due before the trip.

Common mistakes on a 5-day Rajasthan plan

The first is trying to do all four cities. Jaipur–Jodhpur–Jaisalmer–Udaipur–Jaipur is over 1,300 km; in five days that is a road trip, not a holiday. The second is arriving in Jaisalmer in the evening and leaving the next morning, which means you see the dunes but not the fort, or the fort but not the dunes. Give Jaisalmer two nights, one in town and one at camp, or at least a full day.

The third is Day 1 timing. If you take an afternoon train, Day 1 is effectively lost, and the plan becomes four days. Take the morning Shatabdi or an early flight. The fourth is ignoring Tuesdays, when the Vande Bharat does not run, and Fridays and Mondays, when some museums shut (Albert Hall in Jaipur has in the past closed on the last Tuesday of the month; check before you go). Our Rajasthan tourist places list has the opening days we know of.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 days enough for Rajasthan?

Five days is enough for three cities: Jaipur plus Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, or Jaipur plus Pushkar and Udaipur. It is not enough for all four big cities, which involve more than 1,300 km of driving in a loop. Give Jaipur two days, your final city two days, and use the middle day for the drive with a stop on the way.

Which is better in 5 days, Jaisalmer or Udaipur?

Jaisalmer gives you the desert, a camp night and a living fort, but needs about 620 km of driving plus an overnight train. Udaipur gives lakes, palaces and the Kumbhalgarh–Ranakpur day trip with about 420 km of driving. Choose Jaisalmer from November to February and for groups of friends; choose Udaipur for couples, families with parents, and any trip between March and October.

How far is Jaipur from Jodhpur and Jaisalmer?

Jaipur to Jodhpur is about 335 km, roughly 6 hours by car with a stop. Jodhpur to Jaisalmer is about 285 km, about 5 hours on a good highway. Jaipur to Jaisalmer direct is about 560 km; the overnight 12468 Leelan Express covers it in about 12 hours 40 minutes, which is why most 5-day plans drive out and train back.

Can I do Rajasthan in 5 days without a car?

Yes, with trains and buses. Take the Shatabdi to Jaipur, the Vande Bharat or an RSRTC bus to Jodhpur, a morning train such as the 12249 Swarn Nagari Express (Jodhpur 04:00 → Jaisalmer 09:00) and the Leelan Express back. You lose the roadside stops at Pushkar or Osian and need auto-rickshaws in each city, but you save the car cost.

What is the best month for a 5-day Rajasthan trip?

November and February are best: dry days of 25–29°C in Jaipur, cool desert nights, and the Pushkar Mela (17–25 November 2026) or Jaisalmer Desert Festival (about 18–20 February 2027). December and January are also good but busier and costlier between 20 December and 5 January. Avoid April to June for the desert route.

How much does a 5-day Rajasthan trip cost per person?

For two people sharing a car and three-star hotels in season, budget about ₹18,000–₹25,000 per person including a dunes camp night and monument fees. Heritage hotels push it to ₹30,000–₹35,000, and Christmas–New Year adds more. Trains and buses with budget hotels can bring it under ₹12,000. Our packaged tours are quoted on request for your dates.
