Manali in December 2026: Weather, Snow, Christmas & New Year Guide

Manali in December averages 13.5°C by day and 0.3°C at night. Where to find snow, what’s open, how big the Christmas–New Year rush gets and how to plan around it.

Short answer: Manali in December is properly cold and mostly dry. India Meteorological Department (IMD) normals for 1991–2020 give an average daytime high of about 13.5°C and a night-time low of about 0.3°C, with only around two rainy days in the month. Snow in Manali town is possible but not guaranteed. In 2025 the town stayed dry until the last days of December. The dependable snow is higher up, at Solang, the Atal Tunnel and Sissu. The first half of December is quiet and good value. From about 20 December to 5 January Manali is at its busiest of the whole year, with full hotels, peak rates and long traffic jams towards the tunnel.

This guide covers the month week by week: what the weather really does, where you will find snow, what is open, how bad the Christmas and New Year rush gets, and how we plan December trips so the snow day doesn’t turn into six hours stuck in a queue. It is written by our team in Kullu–Manali and was last checked in October 2026.

Manali weather in December: the numbers

December is when Manali properly turns to winter. The table below compares IMD’s long-term averages for Manali (station at about 2,050 m) for November, December and January. The averages show how the month sits between the two.

IMD normal (1991–2020) November December January
Average day maximum 17.3°C 13.5°C 10.5°C
Average night minimum 2.6°C 0.3°C −1.1°C
Record low −5.0°C −10.0°C −11.6°C
Average precipitation 31 mm 39 mm 90 mm
Average rainy/snowy days 1.8 2.2 5.6

The last two rows matter most. December gets less than half of January’s precipitation. Snow needs moisture as well as cold, and a western disturbance brings both. December has the cold most days but the moisture on only a couple of them. That is why so many December visitors find a frozen, sunny, brown-and-white Manali rather than the deep snow in the photographs.

Week by week

The weekly picture below is what our drivers and coordinators see on the ground in a normal year. It is not an official forecast, and any single year can run warmer, colder or wetter.

  • 1–10 December: clear, crisp days around 12–15°C and nights just above freezing. Heavy jackets in the evening only. The quietest stretch of the month, with off-season hotel rates.
  • 11–19 December: nights start dropping below zero, with frost on the car most mornings. Still quiet. The first proper western disturbance of winter sometimes arrives in this window and puts snow on Solang and the tunnel road.
  • 20–31 December: the coldest days of the month and the busiest week of the year. Whether you get snow now depends almost entirely on whether a western disturbance turns up. In 2024 heavy snow arrived around 27 December. In 2025 the month stayed dry until a disturbance was forecast from 30 December.

Will it snow in Manali in December?

It depends on how high you go. At 2,050 m, Manali town gets a snowfall in some Decembers and not in others, so don’t book a December trip expecting snow outside your hotel. Solang Valley (about 2,500 m) and Gulaba on the old Rohtang road usually have snow on the ground by late December once there has been a spell. Sissu and Lahaul, beyond the Atal Tunnel, are colder and higher, and are the most reliable snow you can reach in a day from Manali in December.

That is why almost every December itinerary we plan includes one day on our Atal Tunnel and Sissu snow trip. If snow is the main reason for the holiday, January and early February are the safer bet. Our Himachal snowfall guide for winter 2026-27 sets out the month-by-month odds for Manali, Shimla and the other hill towns. Weighing Shimla instead? Our Shimla in December guide covers Kufri, Narkanda and the Winter Carnival.

Christmas and New Year in Manali: how big is the rush?

Bigger than most first-time visitors expect. Reported figures from the last two winters:

  • December 2025: more than 33,500 out-of-state vehicles entered Manali between 1 and 27 December. More than 34,000 vehicles went through the Atal Tunnel in the single week of 21–27 December, with 7,237 on 26 December alone. The president of the Federation of Himachal Hotels and Restaurant Association put Manali’s capacity at about 45,000 rooms and said around 95% were booked, with high occupancy expected until 5 January. Delhi’s air quality was one of the reasons people were heading for the hills.
  • December 2024: after heavy snowfall around 27 December, about 1,000 vehicles were reported stuck between Solang and the Atal Tunnel, and police moved roughly 700 tourists to safety. Police divided Manali into eight traffic zones, ran a separate Volvo bus stand and restricted which vehicles could go up to the tunnel.

The same pattern shows up every year. The bottlenecks are the town entrance, the Old Manali road, Hadimba Temple, Vashisht and Aleo, and the Manali–Solang–Atal Tunnel highway. On Christmas weekend the Bhuntar–Kasol–Manikaran road jams too. After fresh snow the police often stop ordinary vehicles beyond Solang, and only allow 4x4s through when the road is slippery. That is a safety rule, not something a driver or agent can talk their way past.

None of this means you should skip Christmas in Manali. It means the trip has to be planned around the crowds:

  • Do the tunnel early, and on a weekday if you can. We leave Manali for Sissu at first light and are heading back before the midday wave. On 24–26 and 30–31 December we usually swap the snow day to a less crowded date.
  • Stay in Manali, not on the highway. A hotel in town or Old Manali keeps the evenings walkable when the roads are full.
  • Keep a local car and driver. Self-drivers from the plains bear the brunt of the jams and of the post-snowfall vehicle restrictions. A local driver knows when to turn back and which link roads are moving. Our Delhi to Manali taxi can stay with you for the whole trip.
  • Build in a buffer day. One snowfall can close the tunnel road for a day or hold traffic at Solang. A spare day turns that from a lost holiday into a slow morning.

What’s open in Manali in December

Place December status What to know
Atal Tunnel & Sissu Open in normal weather Your best snow day. Closed or restricted to 4×4 for a day or two after heavy snow.
Rohtang Pass Closed for winter Shut to tourist vehicles by December. Snow play happens at Gulaba, Solang or Sissu instead. Live position on our Rohtang and road status page.
Solang Valley Open Ropeway and snow activities run when the weather allows. See Solang Valley activities.
Hadimba Temple, Mall Road, Old Manali Open Busy from 20 December. Some Old Manali cafés close for the winter.
Vashisht hot springs Open At their best on a sub-zero morning.
Kullu, Naggar, Manikaran Open Good low-altitude day out. Expect Christmas jams on the Kasol road.
Spiti via Kunzum La Closed Winter Spiti is reached only via Shimla and Kinnaur. It is a separate trip.

One date people often get wrong is the Manali Winter Carnival. It used to open on 2 January, but in both 2025 and 2026 it ran from 20 January. The 2027 dates had not been announced when this was written, so don’t build a late-December trip around it.

A 5-day December plan that dodges the worst of it

This is the shape of most December trips we run from Delhi. It changes with the weather, and the snow day moves to whichever morning the road is clearest.

  • Day 1: Delhi to Manali. Overnight Volvo or a private car via Chandigarh, Bilaspur and Mandi (about 540 km, 11–13 hours). Reach Manali by morning and rest.
  • Day 2: Manali at walking pace. Hadimba Devi Temple early, before the queues, then Manu Temple, Vashisht hot springs, Old Manali and Mall Road in the evening.
  • Day 3: Snow day. Leave at first light for the Atal Tunnel and Sissu, with Solang on the way back. Hire snow suits and boots before you go up. Our snow gear guide explains where. If the tunnel road is closed, we switch to Solang or Gulaba.
  • Day 4: Kullu, Naggar and Manikaran. The low-altitude buffer day: castle, art gallery and hot springs. This is also where a cancelled snow day gets made up.
  • Day 5: Manali to Delhi. Morning free, then the drive or overnight bus back.

Families with small children or grandparents can follow the same route at a slower pace. Our 5-day Manali family itinerary shows how we split the days so everyone gets something. Couples usually add a night and upgrade the hotel. Our Manali honeymoon package is built around exactly that.

Budget and booking: when to lock it in

December splits into two seasons for pricing. From 1 to 19 December our Himachal packages are on off-season rates. Departures from 20 December to 5 January carry a peak-season supplement of about 25%, and normal winter rates return from 6 January. Hotels in Manali move the same way, often more sharply. Last year the good rooms for the New Year week were mostly gone well before Christmas.

Our advice:

  • Want quiet, low prices and some chance of snow higher up? Travel 1–19 December. It is the best-value winter week in Manali.
  • Must be there for Christmas or New Year’s Eve? Book hotel and transport by early November, keep the snow day flexible, and accept that 31 December evening will be crowded.
  • Want deep snow in town? Go in January or early February instead.

For fixed itineraries with sample rates, start with our Himachal tour package from Delhi. Most December trips are this route with a Sissu day added.

What to pack for Manali in December

  • Two sets of thermal innerwear. You will wear them every day, not just on the snow day.
  • A down or padded jacket plus a fleece. Layers beat one heavy coat, because sunny afternoons in town can feel mild.
  • Woollen cap, gloves, two pairs of thick socks. The mornings are the coldest part of the day.
  • Shoes with real grip. Iced patches on the Hadimba and Old Manali lanes catch people out more than the snow does.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm. Sun on snow at 3,000 m burns faster than you expect.
  • Some cash and a power bank. ATMs and network get patchy beyond the tunnel, and batteries drain fast in the cold.

If you are driving yourself, read our note on Himachal entry tax and permits before you leave, and carry snow chains or travel in a vehicle that has them.

For travel agents: December group departures

If you are sending groups to Manali this December, the same rules apply at scale: snow days must be movable, coach parking near Hadimba and Solang is tight in the peak week, and late-December hotel allotments need confirming early. Our B2B guide to selling Himachal in winter covers rate seasons and rooming. As a Himachal DMC, we handle ground arrangements for agents across the state.

Manali in December: frequently asked questions

What is the temperature in Manali in December?

IMD’s 1991–2020 normals give Manali an average December maximum of about 13.5°C and an average minimum of about 0.3°C. Nights below freezing are common in the second half of the month, and the record low is −10°C. Sissu and Solang are several degrees colder than town.

Is there snowfall in Manali in December?

Sometimes in town, usually higher up. Manali town gets snow in some Decembers and stays dry in others. In 2025 it was dry until the last days of the month. Solang, Gulaba and Sissu beyond the Atal Tunnel are the realistic places to find snow in December.

Is December a good time to visit Manali?

Yes, if you want cold, clear weather and a winter feel. The first three weeks are quiet and good value. From about 20 December to 5 January Manali is at its busiest of the year, so book early and expect traffic. If guaranteed snow is the priority, January is better.

Is the Atal Tunnel open in December?

Yes, in normal weather. After heavy snowfall the police can stop traffic beyond Solang or allow only 4×4 vehicles for a day or two while the road is cleared. A flexible snow day avoids most of the disappointment.

Is Rohtang Pass open in December?

No. Rohtang is closed to tourist vehicles for the winter by December. Snow play happens at Solang, Gulaba or Sissu instead.

When is the Manali Winter Carnival?

It is no longer an early-January event. It ran from 20 January in both 2025 and 2026. Dates for 2027 had not been announced as of October 2026.

How many days are enough for Manali in December?

Five days from Delhi, including the overnight journeys, is the minimum we suggest: one day for Manali, one snow day, one buffer or Kullu day, and travel. Over Christmas and New Year, add a day to absorb traffic and weather; our Christmas and New Year Manali packages page has a 6-day plan built that way.
