Choose Manali if you want to drive in from Delhi or Chandigarh, keep the budget tight, and combine snow with a road trip through the Kullu valley. Choose Kashmir if you want the most dependable winter snow (Gulmarg), a houseboat night on Dal Lake, and a short flight instead of a 12-hour drive. Both are excellent; they suit different trips. This page compares them on the things people actually decide on: snow by month, how you get there, what each trip is like on the ground, the practical catches, and what it costs.

Short answer: for a snow holiday in January or February, Kashmir (Gulmarg) is the safer bet. For a road trip, a family trip on a set budget, or a December break from Delhi or Chandigarh, Manali is easier. Our Shimla Manali trip from Chandigarh (5N/6D) starts from ₹12,499 per person · twin sharing · Deluxe · off-season rate. Kashmir trips are quoted for your dates because airfare and houseboat category move the price a lot.

Manali vs Kashmir at a glance

Manali (Himachal) Kashmir (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg)
Height Town about 2,050 m; Solang about 2,500 m; Sissu (beyond the Atal Tunnel) higher still Srinagar about 1,585 m; Pahalgam about 2,200 m; Gulmarg about 2,650 m; Gondola top station close to 4,000 m
Getting there from Delhi By road: about 540 km, 11–13 hours, or overnight by Volvo. Small airport at Bhuntar, about 50 km from Manali, with few and weather-dependent flights Fly to Srinagar, or take a train to Jammu and continue on the Vande Bharat (Jammu Tawi to Srinagar about 4 h 50 min). By road, Jammu to Srinagar is a full day
Most reliable snow Solang, the Atal Tunnel and Sissu. Manali town gets snow in some winters, not every one Gulmarg, which holds snow longest; Pahalgam and Sonamarg in a good winter
What the trip feels like A mountain road trip: Kullu valley, Old Manali cafés, Solang, the tunnel. Often paired with Shimla or Kasol Four different valleys from one base region: lake and gardens in Srinagar, meadow and Gondola in Gulmarg, river and side valleys in Pahalgam
Ideal length 4–6 nights (Manali alone 3–4; with Shimla 5–6) 6–7 days for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg without rushing
Worst crowding Christmas–New Year and May–June; long queues towards the Atal Tunnel April–June and July–August (school holidays and the Amarnath Yatra), plus Christmas–New Year in Gulmarg
Price on our site From ₹12,499 per person (Chandigarh start) or ₹14,499 (Delhi start), off-season Quoted for your dates and hotel/houseboat category; budget airfare to Srinagar separately

Which is better for snow? It depends on the month

Snow needs both cold and moisture. In December most days are cold enough in both places, but neither gets much precipitation: India Meteorological Department (IMD) 1991–2020 normals give Manali about 39 mm in December against about 90 mm in January, and Srinagar about 27 mm in December against about 64 mm in January and 85 mm in February. That is why a December trip to either place can turn out frozen and sunny rather than deep in snow, and why January and February are the safer snow months in both.

Month Manali Kashmir Our pick
November Clear, cold nights, quiet roads, off-season rates. Snow only high up Golden chinar trees in Srinagar into mid-November; first snow on the higher slopes Kashmir for autumn colour; Manali for value
December Mostly dry; snow at Solang and Sissu after a western disturbance. Very busy from about 20 December First proper snow in Gulmarg is likely; Srinagar usually gets its snow later Kashmir if snow matters most; Manali for an easy drive-in break
January Coldest month (IMD average low about −1°C); best odds of snow in town Chillai Kalan, the hardest 40 days of winter; Gulmarg deep in snow; most road and flight disruption Kashmir (Gulmarg) for snow; keep a buffer day either way
February Snow likely higher up, fewer people, off-season rates Still snowy in Gulmarg and often Pahalgam; fewer tourists Either; best-value snow month in both
March–April Snow retreats to Solang and the tunnel; Rohtang still shut Almond blossom, then the Tulip Garden (opened 16 March in 2026) Kashmir
May–June Rohtang usually reopens; peak season, peak traffic Green meadows, all valleys open; busy Either; book early
July–August Monsoon; landslide risk on the Kullu–Manali road Warm and busy; Amarnath Yatra traffic and checks on the Pahalgam and Sonamarg routes Kashmir, while Himachal has monsoon rain
September–October Clear skies after the monsoon; Lahaul and the high passes still open Crowds thin, clear skies; chinars start turning in late October Either

Getting there: the biggest practical difference

Manali is a road destination. From Chandigarh it is about 290 km (7–8 hours); from Delhi about 540 km (11–13 hours), so most Delhi travellers either take an overnight Volvo or break the drive at Shimla on a Shimla–Manali circuit. Flights into Bhuntar exist but are few and are the first thing cancelled in bad weather, so we never build a winter itinerary around them. The upside: no airfare, and your car and driver stay with you from the plains.

Kashmir is a fly-in (or train-in) destination. Most guests fly straight into Srinagar. Since the Jammu Tawi–Srinagar Vande Bharat service was flagged off on 30 April 2026 (via Katra and Banihal, about 4 h 50 min), you can also take a train to Jammu and continue by rail, which has kept running on days when snow closed the Jammu–Srinagar highway. Snow and poor visibility can delay Srinagar flights in mid-winter, so keep one buffer day before any onward connection.

In practice: if your group includes elderly parents or small children and you live near an airport, Kashmir can be the less tiring trip despite being further away. If you are driving from Punjab, Haryana or Delhi, Manali is simpler.

What each trip is like on the ground

Manali

Manali is one valley you explore by car: Hadimba Temple and Old Manali, Vashisht, a day at Solang, and a day through the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel to Sissu in Lahaul for the surest snow. In summer, Rohtang Pass needs a rationed online permit and is closed to tourist vehicles in winter; our Rohtang permit and road status page tracks it. Most people pair Manali with Shimla, Kasol or Dharamshala, so the trip feels like a journey rather than a single base. Weighing Shimla too? Read Shimla vs Manali.

Kashmir

A first Kashmir trip usually covers four places: Srinagar (Dal Lake, a shikara ride, the Mughal gardens and one night on a houseboat), Gulmarg (the meadow and the two-stage Gondola), Pahalgam (the Lidder river and the Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari valleys) and Sonamarg, which the Z-Morh tunnel now keeps reachable from Srinagar in winter, weather permitting. Baisaran meadow above Pahalgam was still closed to visitors in 2026 when we last checked, so plan Pahalgam around the open valleys.

The catches nobody mentions

Manali Kashmir
After fresh snow, police often stop ordinary vehicles beyond Solang and let only 4x4s through. That is a safety rule, not something a driver can negotiate Prepaid SIMs from outside J&K do not work in Kashmir. Carry a postpaid number or buy a local SIM
Christmas–New Year traffic is heavy: more than 33,500 out-of-state vehicles entered Manali between 1 and 27 December 2025 Pahalgam’s side valleys are visited in local union taxis, and pony rides, sledges and Gondola tickets are paid on the spot. Ask your quote to list these
Snow sledges, snow suits and local taxis at Solang and Gulaba are paid locally Book Gulmarg Gondola tickets only on the official J&K Cable Car Corporation portal; Phase 2 often pauses for wind or snow, and the Gondola has been closing on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month for maintenance
Long drive days: Delhi–Manali is a full day each way unless you split it at Shimla or take the overnight bus The Jammu–Srinagar highway shuts around Banihal several times each winter; never plan to drive in and fly out on a tight schedule

Cost: what moves the price

The clearest cost difference is getting there. Manali can be reached overland, so the package price is close to your whole trip cost. For Kashmir, add return airfare to Srinagar (or train fares to Jammu), and decide early on the houseboat category, which changes the quote more than any hotel choice.

Our sample Himachal rates, from the published price blocks on each package:

Trip Length Starts From (per person)
Shimla Manali Tour Package from Chandigarh 5N/6D Chandigarh ₹12,499 · twin sharing · Deluxe · off-season
Beautiful Shimla Manali from Delhi 5N/6D Delhi ₹14,499 · 4 sharing a car · Deluxe · off-season
Attractive Manali from Delhi 4N/5D (3 hotel nights + 1 overnight drive) Delhi ₹14,999 · twin sharing · Deluxe · off-season

Rates vary by season, group size and hotel category, and availability is confirmed only once you send your dates. Super Deluxe hotels add about 18% and Luxury about 35% to the Deluxe rate; Premium is quoted on request. Off-season (the rates above): 1 July–30 September, 1 November–19 December and 6 January–14 March. Peak season, about 25% higher: 15 March–30 June, all of October, and 20 December–5 January.

Our Kashmir trips are all private, with your own car and driver, and are quoted for your dates: the Kashmir 6 Nights 7 Days Tour (houseboat, a night in Gulmarg, two in Pahalgam, Sonamarg day), the winter-focused Snowclad Kashmir Superior, and Kashmir with Vaishno Devi. Compare all of them on best Kashmir tour packages.

Who should pick which

  • Snow is the whole point, January–February: Kashmir, with a night in Gulmarg.
  • Driving from Delhi, Punjab or Haryana: Manali, or a Shimla–Manali circuit.
  • Tight budget: Manali in the off-season, with no airfare to add.
  • Families with elderly parents: Kashmir if you can fly from your city; Manali from Chandigarh if you prefer shorter drives without flights. Our Himachal family packages are built around shorter drive days.
  • Honeymoon: both work. Kashmir for the houseboat and Gulmarg; Manali for cafés, Old Manali and the Manali honeymoon package.
  • Tulips and blossom (March–April): Kashmir.
  • Christmas–New Year: both are crowded. Manali is easier to reach at short notice; Kashmir gives better snow odds. Book either early.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Manali or Kashmir?

Neither is better for everyone. Kashmir is better for dependable winter snow, a houseboat stay and a short flight in. Manali is better for a road trip from Delhi or Chandigarh, a tighter budget and combining with Shimla or Kasol.

Which has more snow in December?

Gulmarg in Kashmir usually has the more dependable snow. In Manali, snow in December is found reliably at Solang, the Atal Tunnel and Sissu rather than in town. December is a dry month in both, so January and February are the safer snow months.

Is Kashmir more expensive than Manali?

It depends on your dates and hotel grade, so we quote both on request. The fixed difference is travel: for Kashmir you add airfare to Srinagar (or train fares to Jammu), and the houseboat category moves the price, while Manali can be reached by road from Delhi or Chandigarh with the car included.

How many days do I need?

Manali alone needs 3–4 nights, or 5–6 with Shimla. Kashmir needs 6–7 days to cover Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg without rushing.

Can I do Manali and Kashmir in one trip?

Not comfortably in a week. There is no short road link between them in winter, so you would fly or take long road and rail journeys. In summer, a longer trip can link Manali, Ladakh and Kashmir by road over the high passes, but that is a two-week journey.

Is Kashmir open for tourists now?

Yes. Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam all receive tourists, and Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari valleys are open. Baisaran meadow was still closed in 2026 when we last checked. Check the latest advisory before you travel.
