Solang Valley activities at a glance
Solang Valley (Solang Nala) is Manali’s adventure ground, about 13–14 km north of Manali town on the road to the Atal Tunnel. In summer you can ride the 1.3 km ropeway, fly tandem paragliding, and try zorbing or ATV rides. From late December to February the same slopes host snow tubing, snow scooters and ski lessons. Paragliding stops every year from 15 July to 15 September.

Snow usually from late December to February. Flying from March to mid-July and mid-September to November. Paragliding is closed every year from 15 July to 15 September.
13 km from Manali, a 1.3 km ropeway and a 700 m climb to Fatru. No permit needed for Solang or the Atal Tunnel.

- Heavy snow daysTraffic can be stopped beyond Nehru Kund (Dec 2024: about 1,200 vehicles moved back from Solang Nala). Leave by mid-afternoon; chains or a 4×4 cab on snow days.

How far is Solang Valley from Manali?
About 13–14 km north of Manali on the road to the Atal Tunnel — 30–40 minutes by cab in normal traffic, longer on snow days and weekends.
When is there snow in Solang Valley?
Usually from late December to February, sometimes into March. The dates change every winter, so we check the latest snowfall before you book. See our Himachal snowfall guide for winter 2026-27.
Is paragliding open in Solang Valley?
Yes, from March to mid-July and from mid-September onward, weather permitting. The Kullu district stops paragliding every year from 15 July to 15 September, and passengers must be at least 12 years old and 30 kg.
How long is the Solang ropeway?
About 1.3 km, with 8-seat cabins up to the Fatru top station at roughly 3,200 m. It stops in strong wind, rain or poor visibility.
Can beginners ski at Solang?
Yes. When there is snow (usually January to March) you can take a short lesson with an instructor on nursery slopes. For proper training, ABVIMAS Manali runs 7-day elementary courses at Solang for ages 10 and above, January to March.
Can I visit Solang on a heavy snowfall day?
Sometimes not. After heavy snow the administration can stop traffic beyond Nehru Kund; in December 2024 about 1,200 vehicles were moved back from Solang Nala. We watch the orders and change the plan if needed.
Do I need a permit for Solang Valley?
No. Solang and the Atal Tunnel need no permit; only Rohtang Pass needs an online permit — see Rohtang permit and road status.
Solang Valley or Rohtang Pass — which is better?
Solang is close, open most of the year and full of activities. Rohtang is higher, about 51 km away, needs a permit and usually opens only from mid-May. Many guests pair Solang with the Atal Tunnel and Sissu in one day.
