Short answer: an Alleppey houseboat is a converted rice barge (kettuvallam) with bedrooms, a crew and a kitchen that cruises Kerala’s backwaters. Most international visitors book an overnight cruise: board around 12:00, cruise through the afternoon, tie up for the night by about 17:30, cruise again after breakfast and check out around 09:00. A day cruise lasts roughly six hours. October to March is the comfortable season; June to August is monsoon.
Quick answer (checked 23 October 2026)
- Overnight cruise: check-in about 12:00, boats anchor by about 17:30, check-out about 09:00 next day; lunch, tea, dinner and breakfast included.
- Day cruise: usually 11:00 to 17:00 with lunch; no cabin needed.
- Shikara: a small open boat for 1 to 3 hours in the narrow village canals that houseboats cannot enter.
- Air conditioning: on most mid-range boats the bedroom AC runs only at night (roughly 21:00 to 06:00); premium boats run it all day.
- Best months: October to March. Alappuzha averages about 33°C by day and 22°C at night in January (IMD normals 1991–2020).
- Getting there: Cochin International Airport is about 80 km north, roughly 2 hours by car; Alappuzha has its own railway station.

How do the Kerala backwaters work?
The backwaters are a chain of brackish lagoons, lakes and canals running parallel to the Arabian Sea coast. Kerala Tourism describes the network as roughly 900 km of navigable water. The largest body is Vembanad Lake, and the stretch around Alappuzha (still called Alleppey by most visitors) and the low-lying Kuttanad rice region is where nearly all houseboats operate.
The boats themselves are kettuvallams, the old cargo barges that carried rice and spices to Kochi. The hull shape is kept, but the superstructure is now a floating cottage: one or more en-suite bedrooms, a dining area, a covered front deck where you spend most of the day, and a kitchen at the back where the cook works. Houseboats also run from Kumarakom and Kollam; Alleppey has the widest choice.
Overnight cruise, day cruise or shikara: which should you book?
There are three ways to see the same water, and they suit different budgets and schedules.
Overnight cruise. This is the classic experience and what most people mean by “an Alleppey houseboat”. You board at the Punnamada finishing point or a nearby jetty around 12:00. The boat cruises through the afternoon with a lunch stop, then by about 17:30 it ties up at a quiet spot for the night. Operators describe the evening halt as a government requirement: the channels are kept clear for local fishermen and night navigation is not allowed. Dinner is served on board, you sleep in the cabin, and after breakfast the boat cruises for an hour or two before check-out around 09:00. You spend about 21 hours on board, roughly six of them moving. Confirm exact timings with the boat.
Day cruise. Typically 11:00 to 17:00 with lunch included. You see the same lake and canals and skip the cabin. It suits travellers based in a Kochi or Alleppey hotel, families with young children, or a tight budget. If you are short on time in a two-week India itinerary, a day cruise plus a night in a backwater homestay is a reasonable compromise.
Shikara. A small open boat, usually with a canopy and an outboard motor, seating two to six people. Shikaras go where houseboats cannot: the narrow village canals past coconut groves and duck farms. Rides last one to three hours; many guests do a shikara in the morning and board the houseboat at noon.
What is included on an overnight houseboat?
- Crew: usually two or three people, a driver (called the captain), a cook and sometimes a helper. They sleep in a separate crew area at the back.
- Meals: a welcome drink, lunch, evening tea with snacks, dinner and breakfast. Lunch is normally a Kerala meal of rice, sambar, vegetable dishes, pappadam and fried fish. Karimeen (pearl spot), the local lake fish, is often sold at the lunch halt and cooked for a supplement.
- Bedrooms: en-suite with a Western toilet; linen and towels provided. Most boats have one, two or three bedrooms; a few sleep five or six couples.
- Drinking water: usually a few bottles per person; carry a refillable bottle as well.
- Not included: alcohol (you may bring your own), extra fish, and tips for the crew.
Air conditioning and the night rules. Houseboats run on a generator. On standard and deluxe boats the bedroom AC is switched on only at night, typically from around 21:00 to 06:00, and the deck fans run in the day. Premium boats advertise full-time AC. Ask before booking if you travel in the warmer months of March to May, when afternoons are hot and humid.
Classification. The Kerala Department of Tourism classifies houseboats as Silver, Gold or Diamond vessels. All classified boats must carry lifebuoys, fire buckets and extinguishers, a first-aid kit, a GPS unit, crew trained in first aid and fire safety, and proper sewage arrangements such as bio-toilets (Kerala Tourism classification checklist, read 23 October 2026). Ask for a classified boat; it is the simplest quality filter.
Private boat or shared boat, and how many bedrooms?
A private houseboat is the whole boat for your party, whether that is a couple on a one-bedroom boat or three families on a three-bedroom boat. You set the pace and nobody else is on deck. A shared houseboat sells by the cabin: you have your own bedroom but share the deck, the dining table and the route with other guests. Shared boats cost less per person but the experience depends on who else is on board.
On price, think in levels rather than figures, because rates move with season, boat grade and how early you book. A basic one-bedroom overnight boat costs a fraction of a premium multi-bedroom boat with full-time AC and an upper deck. Two couples on one two-bedroom boat pay less per person than on two one-bedroom boats. Day cruises and shikaras are the budget end. Prices rise sharply over Christmas and New Year and on the day of the Nehru Trophy boat race. We quote actual figures for your dates on request.
When is the best time for an Alleppey houseboat?
| Months | Weather (Alappuzha, IMD normals 1991–2020) | What it means on the water |
|---|---|---|
| October to November | Second monsoon; October averages about 357 mm of rain, humidity around 81% | Green and full canals, afternoon showers, fewer visitors, lower rates |
| December to February | January about 32.7°C day, 22.5°C night, 16 mm rain, humidity around 68% | The peak season: dry, breezy evenings, highest demand around Christmas and New Year |
| March to May | Hot and increasingly humid; pre-monsoon showers from late April | Fine on the water with a breeze; book full-time AC; good value in April and May |
| June to August | South-west monsoon; June about 592 mm, July 486 mm, August 350 mm; humidity 86 to 88% | Heavy rain in spells, dramatic skies, lowest rates; boats still run, deck time is limited |
| September | Rain easing; Onam season | Snake-boat race practice on Punnamada; a good shoulder month |

What about the Nehru Trophy boat race?
The Nehru Trophy is Kerala’s most famous snake-boat race, held on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha. The 72nd edition took place on Saturday 22 August 2026 (Onmanorama, 14 August 2026). The 2027 date had not been announced when we checked on 23 October 2026; the race is normally held on a Saturday in August during the Onam season, and the organisers confirm the date a few months ahead. In the weeks before the race, crews practise on the lake in the late afternoon.
On race day itself the finishing-point area is closed to normal houseboat traffic, hotels in Alappuzha fill up, and houseboat rates jump. To watch the race, book a grandstand ticket and hotel well ahead and plan the houseboat for the day before or after. Otherwise avoid that weekend.
How do you reach Alleppey?
- By air: Cochin International Airport (COK) at Nedumbassery is about 78–80 km north of Alappuzha, about 2 to 2.5 hours by car depending on Kochi traffic. Thiruvananthapuram airport (TRV) is roughly 150–160 km south, about 3.5 to 4 hours.
- By train: Alappuzha (station code ALLP) is on the coastal line between Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram. Trains from Ernakulam Junction take about 1 to 1.5 hours; from Thiruvananthapuram about 3 hours. Check times on the IRCTC site before travel.
- By road from Kochi city: about 55 km, 1.5 hours; from Munnar about 170 km, 5 hours; from Thekkady (Periyar) about 140 km, 4 hours.
A typical ten-day Kerala route is Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey houseboat, a beach night at Marari, then fly out. Some travellers continue up the coast for a Goa holiday.
Sample 3-day backwater plan
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Drive from Thekkady or Kochi, arrive Alleppey mid-morning. Shikara ride through the village canals (about 2 hours). Lunch in town. Check into a homestay or small hotel near the lake. |
| Day 2 | Houseboat check-in about 12:00. Cruise across Vembanad Lake and into the Kuttanad canals with a lunch stop. Anchor by about 17:30 at a village mooring; short walk ashore; dinner on board. |
| Day 3 | Early coffee on deck, breakfast, morning cruise. Check-out about 09:00. Drive to Marari beach (30 minutes) or Cochin airport (about 2.5 hours). |
Ethics, plastic and safety on the backwaters
Vembanad Lake is under pressure from the number of boats on it. Three habits help. First, choose a classified boat with a bio-toilet or proper septic tank, so sewage does not go into the lake. Second, cut plastic: Kerala has restricted a range of single-use plastics since 2020, and the simplest step is a refillable bottle filled from the boat’s large water can. Third, do not throw anything overboard, including food.
On safety, ask where the life jackets are when you board, keep children off the bow when moving, and avoid swimming in the lake. Tip the crew at the end if you were happy; one shared amount is the norm.

How Suzu Travels arranges your houseboat
We do not own boats, and we do not name operators online, because the right boat depends on your dates, party size and budget. We match you to a classified boat of the grade you want, confirm the inclusions in writing (meals, AC hours, bedrooms, pick-up point), and connect it to the rest of your Kerala itinerary with a private car and driver. Indian residents can see our Kerala tour packages page for rupee-priced options. A 20% deposit locks your dates and price; full refund if cancelled within 48 hours of paying; balance before the trip; pay by card via Razorpay (international cards accepted) or PayPal.
Frequently asked questions
Is one night on an Alleppey houseboat enough?
For most travellers, yes. One night gives you the full cycle: afternoon cruise, a quiet evening mooring, sunrise on the water and a morning cruise. Two nights suit photographers or anyone who wants to reach quieter parts of Kuttanad. If you are tight on time, a day cruise plus a night in a lakeside homestay works well.
What time does an Alleppey houseboat check in and check out?
Check-in is usually around 12:00 and check-out around 09:00 the next morning. Boats stop cruising and tie up for the night by about 17:30, which operators describe as a government rule for the safety of fishermen and other craft. Timings vary a little by boat, so confirm them when you book.
Does the air conditioning run all night?
On most standard and deluxe boats the bedroom AC runs only at night, typically from about 21:00 to 06:00, because the boat is on a generator. Premium boats offer full-time AC. In December to February a fan is often enough on deck; from March to May full-time AC is worth paying for.
Is an Alleppey houseboat safe for families and older travellers?
Classified boats must carry lifebuoys, fire extinguishers, a first-aid kit and trained crew. The cruise is slow and the water is calm. Boarding involves a step from the jetty, and bathrooms are compact. Children should wear life jackets on deck while moving. Choose a one-level boat if stairs are a concern.
Can I book a houseboat in Kerala during the monsoon?
Yes. Boats run through June to August, and rates are at their lowest. Expect heavy rain in spells, with dry breaks, and limited time on the open deck. Some travellers love the atmosphere. If deck time and sunshine matter to you, choose December to February instead.
Is tipping the houseboat crew expected?
It is customary but not compulsory. If the crew looked after you well, leave a single pooled tip for the whole crew at check-out. The cook and captain share it. Cash is preferred, and small notes are useful because the crew will not have change for large notes.
