Quick answer: the best time to visit Kashmir is April to June for tulips, blossom and green meadows, late October to mid-November for golden chinar trees and quieter roads, and January to February if you want snow. July and August are the busiest months (school holidays and the Amarnath Yatra). For a first trip, plan 6–7 days covering Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.

Kashmir season by season
Spring (March–April): tulips and blossom
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar opens when the flowers bloom — it opened on 16 March in 2026 — and the show usually lasts about a month. Almond and apple blossom, mild days and snow-capped peaks make this one of the best times for sightseeing and shikara rides on Dal Lake. Gulmarg can still have snow in March.
Summer (May–August): green valleys
All valleys are open and roads are at their best, so Sonamarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam are easy to combine. It is also the busiest and most expensive time; book houseboats and hotels early. During the Amarnath Yatra (usually July–August) expect heavier traffic and checks on the Pahalgam and Sonamarg routes. The Srinagar–Leh highway is usually open, so Kashmir can be combined with Ladakh.
Autumn (September–November): chinars and quiet roads
September has clear skies and fewer people. From late October into November the chinar trees in Srinagar’s Mughal gardens and around Dal Lake turn red and gold — the best time for photography. Nights get cold, so pack warm layers.
Winter (December–February): snow
Gulmarg is the most reliable snow destination, especially in January and February. The Sonamarg (Z-Morh) tunnel, opened in January 2025, keeps Sonamarg reachable from Srinagar in winter, but Mughal Road and the Zojila pass towards Ladakh close for the season. Is Kashmir open for tourists now?
Yes. Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam all receive tourists. After the April 2025 attack in Pahalgam several spots were closed; Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari have since reopened, while Baisaran meadow was still closed to visitors in 2026. Security is visible on tourist routes. Check the latest government advisory before you travel, and use registered guides and pony operators.
How to plan your Kashmir trip, step by step
Step 1: Pick your month
Use the table above: tulips (April), green meadows (May–June), autumn colours (late October–November) or snow (January–February).
Step 2: Decide the number of days
Five days covers Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Six to seven days adds Sonamarg and lets you sleep a night in Gulmarg or Pahalgam instead of rushing back to Srinagar. Add two days for Vaishno Devi.
Step 3: Choose how you arrive
Fly into Srinagar (SXR), or take a train to Jammu or Katra and continue on the Vande Bharat Express, which has run from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar since 2 May 2026. By road, Jammu to Srinagar is a full day’s drive — see our Jammu to Srinagar taxi.
Step 4: Book stays
Spend one night on a Dal Lake houseboat and the rest in hotels. In peak months (April–June) and over Christmas–New Year, book well ahead.
Step 5: Know what is paid locally
In Pahalgam the side valleys are visited in local union taxis; for the drives between Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg see our Srinagar taxi service. Pony rides, sledges and Gulmarg Gondola tickets are paid separately. Book the Gondola only on the official J&K Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) portal; it has been closing for maintenance on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month, and Phase 2 often pauses for wind or snow.
Step 6: Sort your phone and documents
Prepaid SIMs from outside J&K do not work in Kashmir; postpaid connections do, or buy a local SIM. Indian citizens need only a government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence). Foreign nationals need a valid passport and Indian visa.
Gulmarg or Pahalgam?
- Gulmarg: wide meadow, the Gondola up the Apharwat slopes and the most reliable winter snow. Best for views, snow play and skiing in winter.
- Pahalgam: the Lidder river, pine forests and the Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari valleys. Best for a slower stay and riverside walks.
