What is the Amarnath Yatra and when is it in 2027?
The Amarnath Yatra is the summer pilgrimage to the holy cave of Shri Amarnathji, about 3,880 m up in the Kashmir Himalaya, where an ice lingam of Shiva forms naturally. The 2027 dates are not announced yet; the Shrine Board usually announces in spring and opens registration around mid-April. Every pilgrim must register, be 13–70 years old and carry a health certificate.
Shri Amarnathji’s cave lies high in the Kashmir Himalaya in Jammu & Kashmir. Inside it, ice forms each year into a lingam of Shiva, revered as Baba Barfani, with smaller ice forms that devotees identify as Parvati and Ganesha. The size of the lingam changes from year to year, so no one can promise how it will look on your day. The yatra is run by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), and it is open only for a few summer weeks.
Amarnath is not one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, though it is often listed with them; some Shakta traditions also count the cave as a Shakti Peeth. Many families combine it with the Vaishno Devi Yatra from Jammu, and those who love high Himalayan shrines also walk to Kedarnath. See all our guides on the pilgrimage tours page.
The legend of Amarnath
This is the popular tradition of the cave, retold in our own words as devotees tell it — a story of faith, not history.
- Parvati's questionIt is believed that Parvati asked Shiva how he alone was beyond death. He agreed to tell her the Amar Katha, the secret of immortality — but only where no living being could hear it.
- Leaving everything behindOn the way he left his bull Nandi at Pahalgam, the moon at Chandanwari, his serpents at Sheshnag, Ganesha at Mahagunas and the five elements at Panchtarni — the stops pilgrims still pass.
- Two pigeons in the caveInside the cave a pair of pigeons, hidden from sight, overheard the story and are said to have become immortal. Pilgrims still look for them near the cave.
- A shepherd finds the caveLocal folklore credits a shepherd, Buta Malik, with rediscovering the cave after a sadhu’s gift of coal turned to gold. Each summer the ice lingam takes shape again.
That is why the old Pahalgam route is walked as a story: every halt — Chandanwari, Sheshnag, Mahagunas, Panchtarni — is a place where Shiva is believed to have set something down before reaching the cave.

From Jammu, yatris travel in Shrine Board convoys from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp. By road Jammu is about 223 km from Pahalgam and about 326 km from Baltal; Srinagar is about 98 km from Pahalgam and about 92 km from Baltal.
How to reach the Amarnath base camps
By air
Srinagar airport is the nearest for both base camps. Jammu airport suits pilgrims who start from the Jammu base camp.
By train
Jammu Tawi is the usual rail start; in 2026 it also had an RFID counter. From Jammu, yatris move in convoys.
By road
Convoys run from Bhagwati Nagar, Jammu, to the Pahalgam (Nunwan) and Baltal base camps. Srinagar is about 98 km from Pahalgam and 92 km from Baltal.
Ponies and palkis
Registered ponies, palkis and pithoos work on both routes. Book only registered service providers.

Before you go
- CarryYour permit, RFID card, health certificate and photo ID; a waterproof shell, down jacket, gloves and cap; grippy trekking shoes and a stick; medicines, dry fruit and a water bottle.

- Best timeEarly in the window (July) is when the ice lingam is usually fullest, but the weather is changeable all season.
- Fake sitesRegister only with the Shrine Board (jksasb.nic.in) or a designated bank branch. Never pay unknown sellers for registration or helicopter seats.
Amarnath Yatra registration: how it works
Every yatri must register with the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board before the yatra. In 2026 advance registration opened on 15 April, online through SASB and at 554 designated branches of J&K Bank, PNB, SBI and Yes Bank, on a first-come-first-served daily quota for each route. The 2027 process will be in SASB’s notice — the steps below are how it worked in 2026.
- Get a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) from an SASB-authorised doctor or institution, issued in that season’s window (in 2026, on or after 8 April). SASB lists authorised doctors state by state.
- Register online with SASB or at a designated bank branch, choosing your route (Baltal or Pahalgam) and date.
- Collect your RFID card in person at a centre in Jammu & Kashmir (in 2026, for example Jammu railway station, Bhagwati Nagar, Udhampur, Banihal and Lakhanpur) and wear it throughout the yatra.
- Carry your permit, RFID card, CHC and photo ID at every check point.
Who can go: pilgrims aged 13 to 70; women more than six weeks pregnant are not allowed. Registered yatris were covered by group accident insurance in 2026. The fee is set in each season’s notice. Only SASB’s official channel (jksasb.nic.in) and the designated bank branches register pilgrims — ignore agents or websites that ask you to pay for “confirmed registration”.
Is there a helicopter to Amarnath?
Not in 2026. The authorities declared the Baltal and Pahalgam yatra routes no-fly zones and suspended helicopter services for the season, as in 2025. Whether helicopters will fly in 2027 has not been announced. Ponies, palkis and pithoos from registered service providers were the way to ride part of the route.
Every spring, websites and WhatsApp sellers advertise “Amarnath helicopter packages”. Until the Shrine Board itself announces a helicopter service for 2027, do not pay anyone for a helicopter seat. If a service is announced, book it only through the channel SASB names.
