Short answer: A Dal Lake houseboat is a carved wooden boat moored on Dal or Nigeen Lake in Srinagar, rented by the room or as a whole boat. The J&K Tourism Department grades licensed boats as Deluxe, A, B, C (and D), and 2026 travel guides put approximate rates at about ₹5,000–20,000 a night for Deluxe, ₹3,000–8,000 for A and ₹1,500–3,500 for B, with meals often included in the better categories. Choose Dal for convenience and views, Nigeen for quiet. One or two nights is ideal; check the category certificate, heating and safety before you pay.

What are the houseboat categories in Srinagar?
The J&K Tourism Department grades licensed houseboats after inspecting rooms, furnishings, sanitation and the hull. The labels matter, but enforcement is imperfect and some owners advertise a higher category than they hold, so ask to see the certificate (Via Kashmir, October 2026).
| Category | What you usually get | Approx. per night (2026) | Meals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deluxe | 3–6 bedrooms with attached baths, hot water, carved walnut ceilings and furniture, a sitting room and front deck | ₹5,000–20,000 (room or whole boat; heritage boats higher) | Often breakfast and dinner, or full board |
| A | 2–4 rooms, mostly attached baths, geyser hot water, simpler interiors | ₹3,000–8,000 | Breakfast, sometimes dinner |
| B | Basic rooms, bathrooms may be shared | ₹1,500–3,500 | Breakfast at best |
| C and D | Older boats, shared baths, wear and damp possible | ₹600–1,500 | Usually none |
Price ranges are approximate and drawn from three 2026 travel guides (AskYatri, March 2026; Holiday Tribe, August 2026; Via Kashmir, October 2026), which don’t fully agree with each other. They are market estimates, not Suzu prices or official tariffs. Rates rise in May–June and around Christmas–New Year, and drop sharply in quiet months.
Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake: which is better?
| Dal Lake (Boulevard side) | Dal Lake (inner rows) | Nigeen Lake | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Busy, close to road and shops | Scenic, on the water, more privacy | Quiet, greener, more birds |
| Access | Short shikara hop from the ghats | Shikara only, longer crossing | Some boats reachable from the shore; farther from the Boulevard |
| Vendors | Many flower and craft shikaras | Some | Fewer |
| Best for | First-timers, one night, families with older relatives | Couples, photographers | Light sleepers, honeymooners, longer stays |
Nigeen is linked to Dal by a channel, so you can still take a shikara across to the Dal sights. Houseboats on the Jhelum river, once common, have shrunk to a few dozen (Kashmir Life reports 60–70 left), and most visitors don’t stay there now.
How do you get to your houseboat, and what does the shikara cost?
Your cab drops you at a numbered ghat on Boulevard Road (or at the Nigeen shore), and the houseboat’s own shikara usually ferries you across. Ask whether this crossing is included and whether it runs on request at night. The Tourism Department’s notified crossing charges are ₹50 to the first row of houseboats and ₹100 to the back rows from some ghats; a sightseeing shikara is ₹700 for the first hour and ₹400 for each extra hour (Greater Kashmir, 2 June 2023, the latest full rate list we could find). Since April 2025 every shikara must show its rate card and carry life jackets for all passengers (Kashmir Life, 18 April 2025).
What should you check before booking a houseboat?
- Name, photos and category certificate. Get the boat’s name and recent photos of your actual room, not a brochure.
- Meals in writing. Breakfast only, breakfast and dinner, or full board. Kashmiri dinner on board is part of the fun.
- Heating (October to March). Ask what it is (electric heater, bukhari, heated blanket) and whether it costs extra; one 2026 guide notes about ₹500–1,000 a night extra for heating in winter. Power cuts happen, so ask about backup.
- Hot water and attached bath. Standard in Deluxe and most A boats; often missing below that.
- Fire safety. In November 2023 five houseboats burned on Dal Lake and three tourists died (Kashmir Life). Check for a fire extinguisher, a clear exit and that heaters are switched off when you sleep.
- Book directly or through a registered operator. Avoid touts at the airport and taxi stands who steer you to a friend’s boat.
- Carry ID. Houseboats register guests like hotels.
Is a houseboat worth it, and for how long?
Yes, for one night at least. Waking up on the lake, watching the light change on the Zabarwan hills, and taking an early shikara to the floating vegetable market is what most people remember from Srinagar. Two nights is lovely in spring and autumn. Many travellers then switch to a hotel for the rest of the trip, especially families with small children or anyone who wants easy road access late at night.
Winter is a special case. A heated Deluxe houseboat on a misty December morning is memorable, but an unheated B-category boat in January is miserable. If you travel between December and February, pay for the better category and confirm heating. Our Kashmir in December and Kashmir in January guides cover cold-weather planning.

What this means for your trip
Book one or two houseboat nights at the start of your Kashmir trip, in Deluxe or a good A-category boat. Dal Lake houseboat: frequently asked questions
What is the price of a houseboat in Dal Lake?
Approximately ₹5,000–20,000 a night for Deluxe, ₹3,000–8,000 for A-category and ₹1,500–3,500 for B-category, according to 2026 travel guides; these are market estimates, not official tariffs. Rates vary with season, room count and meal plan, so confirm in writing.
Which is better, Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake houseboats?
Dal is central, with easy access to the Boulevard, gardens and shikara rides, but busier. Nigeen is smaller and quieter with fewer vendors, better for couples and light sleepers. Both are connected by a channel.
Are meals included in a houseboat stay?
Usually in Deluxe and many A-category boats (breakfast and dinner or full board); B and lower often include breakfast only or nothing. Always confirm the meal plan when you book. Every one of our Srinagar tour packages includes a houseboat night and a one-hour shikara ride.
Is it safe to stay in a houseboat?
Generally yes, with sensible checks. After the November 2023 Dal Lake fire that killed three tourists, look for a fire extinguisher and a clear exit, and switch heaters off at night. Wear a life jacket on shikara crossings.
Are houseboats good in winter?
A heated Deluxe or good A-category boat is a memorable winter stay. Confirm the type of heating, whether it costs extra (about ₹500–1,000 a night on some boats) and power backup. Avoid unheated budget boats from December to February.
How many nights should I stay on a houseboat?
One night gives you the sunset, dinner on board and an early shikara; two nights is relaxed in spring and autumn. Most visitors then move to hotels for Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
How do I reach my houseboat from the airport?
Take a cab to the ghat on Boulevard Road or the Nigeen shore named by your houseboat, then their shikara across. The notified crossing charge to the first row is ₹50; ask whether the boat includes transfers.
