Short answer: Kasol in December is cold, quiet and clear: days around 10–14°C, nights near 0°C, and a real chance of snow in Tosh and on the Kheerganga trail, though only occasional flurries in Kasol town itself at 1,580 m. Manikaran’s hot springs, Chalal and Tosh work all month. Kheerganga is a day trek only, out of season and often icy, so treat it as optional. Expect a sleepy valley till 23 December, then Christmas–New Year crowds and higher rates.
Quick answer (checked 23 October 2026)
- Weather: December averages about 14°C by day and 5°C at night in Kasol (Climate-Data.org normals); cold spells and riverside stays push nights to 0°C or below.
- Snow odds: Kasol town: occasional, rarely settles. Tosh (about 2,400 m) and Kheerganga (about 2,960 m): likely by late December most years.
- Kheerganga: Day trek only since the Forest Department stopped overnight camping at the top in July 2024; November–March is outside the normal trekking season and the trail can be icy. Confirm locally.
- Open all month: Manikaran gurudwara and hot springs, Chalal walk, Tosh village, Kasol cafés (fewer than in summer).
- Getting there: HRTC overnight bus Delhi–Bhuntar (ordinary from about ₹770, Volvo about ₹1,520–1,550 on 24 Oct 2026 listings), then 31 km by local bus or taxi; private Volvos run direct to Kasol.
- Crowd and cost: Low and cheap 1–22 December; 24 December–2 January is the busiest week of winter, with room rates up 30–50%.

What is the weather in Kasol in December?
Kasol sits at about 1,580 m on the Parvati river, 31 km from Bhuntar airport. Published climate normals for the town (Climate-Data.org, as shown on Wikipedia, checked 23 October 2026) give December a mean maximum of 14.2°C, a mean minimum of 5.3°C and about 55 mm of precipitation. Those are averages for the whole month; in practice early December afternoons can touch 15–16°C in the sun, while the last week often sees nights at or below 0°C, especially in riverside camps and in Chalal and Tosh. January is colder and wetter (11.6°C / 3.2°C, 111 mm), which is why late December is the turning point for snow.
The air is dry and visibility is excellent. Mornings are frosty, the sun is strong from 10 am to 3 pm, and the temperature drops fast after sunset. Pack for two seasons in one day.
Does it snow in Kasol in December?
Kasol town gets snow some Decembers, usually a flurry that melts by noon. Snow that stays on the ground is more typical in January and February. The higher villages are a different story: Tosh at roughly 2,400 m, Kalga and Pulga above Barshaini, Grahan and the Kheerganga trail usually see settled snow from the last ten days of December. If seeing snow is the point of your trip, build the plan around Tosh and a backup day in Manali rather than Kasol itself. For how snow seasons actually run across the state, read our Himachal snowfall guide for winter 2026-27.
Two practical warnings. First, the Barshaini–Tosh road is narrow and ices up; hire a local taxi rather than driving yourself after a snowfall. Second, after heavy snow the upper villages can be cut off for a day or two, so do not book Tosh for your last night before a flight.
Is the Kheerganga trek open in December?
Kheerganga is a 12–13 km one-way trail from Barshaini (about 2,000 m) to a meadow and hot spring at about 2,960 m. Three things matter in December:
- No overnight stay at the top. The Forest Department barred camping and night halts at Kheerganga in July 2024 (reported by The Tribune at the time), with walkers asked to reach by about 10 am and start down by 2 pm. The rule still stood at our last check; our Kheerganga trek page explains the day-trek format.
- Out of season. The usual trekking window is April to October. From November to March the upper half of the trail can carry snow and black ice, and daylight is short (sunset before 5:30 pm). A 25 km round trip in 8–9 hours of light with snow on the top section is a serious day, not a café walk.
- Weather closures. After a heavy snowfall the forest check-post at Barshaini may stop walkers altogether. There is no published winter calendar; ask the check-post or your host the day before.
Our advice: if you are fit, start by 6:30 am with a local guide, microspikes and a headlamp, and turn back at Rudranag if the snow line is below the forest. Everyone else should do Tosh and Manikaran, and save Kheerganga for April–June or September–October. Overnight camps are available lower down, at Barshaini, Kalga and Tosh, and by the river in Kasol; see camping in Kasol for how that works in winter.
What is open and worth doing in Kasol in December?
- Manikaran (4 km): The gurudwara and the hot springs run all year and feel best in winter. Langar is served through the day, the hot-water tanks are free, and the Ram temple is beside the river. Dress modestly and cover your head inside the gurudwara. Go early or after 3 pm to avoid day-trip buses.
- Chalal (30–45 minutes on foot): Cross the footbridge behind Kasol market and follow the river through pine forest. Fewer cafés are open in December, but the walk is the point. Return before dark; the trail is unlit.
- Tosh (about 20 km): Taxi to Barshaini, then a short drive or a 3 km walk up. Wooden houses, apple orchards and snow peaks in every direction. Many guesthouses stay open in winter with wood stoves; some cafés close.
- Kasol market and the riverbank: Israeli and Himachali cafés, bakeries and a flea market. Fewer places are open mid-week in December, but the New Year week brings most of them back.
- Malana (via Jari, about 21 km to the road-head, then a 1.5–2 hour climb): Possible on dry days. The village has strict customs: do not touch people, houses, temples or belongings, stay on the marked path, and do not expect to stay the night inside the village; outsiders use stays near the road-head or in Jari and Kasol. Many visitors are better off skipping it in winter, when the trail is icy and the village prefers to be left alone.
Rafting, paragliding and most river camps are shut for the season. For winter adventure options across the state see our adventure pages.
What are Christmas and New Year like in Kasol?
From about 23 December to 2 January Kasol fills up with groups from Delhi, Chandigarh and Punjab. Cafés run late, there are parties at camps and hostels, and the single road through the market jams on 31 December. Rooms that cost ₹1,200 in early December go for ₹2,000–3,000, and riverside cottages double. Book stays and bus seats two to three weeks ahead, and expect a ₹100-per-day Himachal entry charge on outside-state cars at the border (see Himachal entry tax and permits). If you want New Year with snow more or less assured, Manali with Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel is the safer bet; Kasol is better for the quieter first three weeks of the month. Both appear in our round-up of the best places to visit in December in India.
How do you reach Kasol in December?
Bus: HRTC runs overnight services from ISBT Kashmere Gate to Bhuntar and Manali; on 24 October 2026 listings the ordinary buses showed about ₹770–790 and Himsuta Volvos about ₹1,520–1,550, departing 7–10 pm and arriving 6–8 am (HRTC fares via AbhiBus, checked 23 October 2026). From Bhuntar, local HRTC buses run to Kasol and Manikaran roughly every 10–40 minutes from 6 am to about 6:30 pm, taking 1–1.5 hours; a taxi is ₹1,200–1,800. Private Volvos from Majnu ka Tila and Kashmere Gate go direct to Kasol and Manikaran with fares listed from about ₹700 to ₹1,700. In winter, avoid the last bus of the evening; fog on the plains delays arrivals.
Car: Delhi–Kasol is about 520 km, 11–12 hours via Chandigarh, Mandi, the Aut tunnel and Bhuntar. The Delhi to Manali taxi route is the same until Bhuntar, so a Kasol drop or a Kasol-plus-Manali loop is easy. Chandigarh–Kasol is about 280 km, 7–8 hours.
Air: Bhuntar airport is 31 km away; flights are few and often cancelled in winter weather. Treat Chandigarh as the dependable airport.
A 3-day Kasol plan for December
| Day | Plan | Notes for December |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive Bhuntar on the overnight bus, reach Kasol by 9 am. Check in, breakfast, walk to Chalal and back. Evening in the market. | Ask for a room with a heater or stove; riverside rooms are coldest. |
| Day 2 | Taxi to Barshaini and Tosh after breakfast; walk the village, lunch with a view, back via Manikaran for the hot springs and langar before dark. | Leave by 9 am; roads above Barshaini ice over after 4 pm. |
| Day 3 | Optional Kheerganga day trek (fit walkers, guide, early start) or a slow morning by the river and a café brunch; evening bus from Bhuntar or Kasol. | Keep the bus booking for after 6 pm if you attempt Kheerganga. |
The full plan with routes and costs for other months is in our Kasol trip plan. Three days on public transport with a guesthouse costs about ₹6,000–9,000 per person outside the New Year week; a private cab and a riverside cottage take it to ₹15,000 and up. Our Himachal trip cost guide explains the levers. Prefer a package? Our Kullu Manali honeymoon 3N/4D starts from ₹12,999 per person (indicative, confirmed on quote) and can swap one Manali night for Kasol.
What should you pack for Kasol in December?
- A warm jacket (down or synthetic), a fleece, thermals for nights, a woollen cap and gloves.
- Shoes with grip; trail shoes or light boots if you plan Tosh or Kheerganga. Microspikes if attempting Kheerganga after snow.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen; winter sun on snow is harsh.
- A power bank and a torch; power cuts follow snowfall.
- A towel and slippers for the Manikaran hot springs, and a head covering for the gurudwara.
- Cash. Kasol has ATMs but they run dry in the New Year week; cards fail when the network drops.
- Any regular medicines; the nearest proper hospital is in Kullu.
Frequently asked questions
Is December a good time to visit Kasol?
Yes, if you want cold, clear days and a quiet valley. The first three weeks are cheap and calm; the last week is festive and crowded. Snow in Kasol town is occasional, but Tosh and the upper villages usually have it by late December. Treks like Kheerganga are out of season, so December suits café-and-village trips more than hiking trips.
How cold does Kasol get in December?
Average December temperatures for Kasol are about 14°C by day and 5°C at night, with cold spells taking nights to 0°C or a little below, especially by the river and in Tosh. Days in the sun feel pleasant; evenings need a proper jacket, thermals and a heated room. January is colder and wetter than December.
Can I do the Kheerganga trek in December?
Only as a day trek, and only in good conditions. Overnight stays at the top have been barred by the Forest Department since July 2024, and November to March is outside the normal trekking season because of snow and ice on the upper trail. Fit walkers with a guide, an early start and microspikes sometimes manage it; most visitors should wait for April–June or September–October.
Is Manikaran open in December?
Yes. The gurudwara, langar and hot springs at Manikaran operate all year, and winter is when the hot water feels best. It is 4 km from Kasol by bus or taxi. Visit early morning or after 3 pm to avoid day-trip crowds, cover your head inside the gurudwara and carry a towel and slippers for the bathing tanks.
How crowded is Kasol at New Year?
Very. From about 23 December to 2 January Kasol draws groups from Delhi, Chandigarh and Punjab; the market road jams on 31 December and room rates rise 30–50% or more. Book stays and buses two to three weeks ahead. If you want a calmer New Year with likely snow, Manali with Solang Valley is the easier alternative.
Can I visit Malana in December?
You can on dry days, but think twice. The trail from the Jari-side road-head climbs for 1.5–2 hours and ices up in winter. The village has strict customs: no touching people, houses or temples, stay on the path, and do not expect to stay inside the village. Many travellers skip Malana in December and spend the day at Tosh and Manikaran instead.
