Short answer: Mussoorie in December is crisp rather than frozen: days around 10–13°C, nights 1–5°C, mostly clear skies and the famous Winterline glowing over the Doon Valley at sunset. Snow in town is occasional and usually comes in the last week of December or January; Dhanaulti and Surkanda Devi, an hour east, see it more often. With the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway fully open since April 2026, the drive is now about 2.5–3 hours to Dehradun plus an hour up the hill.
Quick answer (checked 23 October 2026)

What is the weather like in Mussoorie in December?
Mussoorie sits at about 2,000 m on the first ridge of the Garhwal Himalaya, looking south over Dehradun and north to the snow peaks of Bandarpunch and Swargarohini. Long-term station normals give December a mean daily maximum of 12.7°C and a mean minimum of 4.5°C, with a record low of −3.9°C; January is colder at 10.3°C and 2.8°C (climate table compiled from IMD data, checked 23 October 2026). Those numbers describe a month of bright, dry days, with the sun strong enough for a walk in a light jacket at noon, and cold, still nights where you want a heater on.
Mussoorie’s winter is drier than the plains’ fog season. While Delhi sits under smog in late December, the ridge is usually above the haze with sharp visibility, which is exactly why the Winterline shows up so well. The exceptions are the two or three western disturbances that pass through most Decembers, bringing a day or two of cloud, cold rain and, if the system is strong enough, snow.
What is the Winterline, and when can I see it?
The Winterline is a false horizon that appears over the Doon Valley at sunset: a sharp band where the lower sky turns dusty orange and grey while the sky above stays pale blue or pink, as if a second horizon has been drawn above the real one. It occurs when the low winter sun lights the layer of dust and moisture trapped over the valley; Mussoorie’s position on the ridge, looking down at that layer, makes it visible here in a way it rarely is elsewhere. Locals and the district administration date the season from mid-October to late January, and it peaks in November and December.
The viewing window is short, about 5:15 to 6:00 pm in December. The classic spots are Gun Hill (walk or take the ropeway from the Mall), Lal Tibba in Landour, Camel’s Back Road, and the terrace of George Everest’s house on the Hathipaon ridge. Any west or south-west-facing balcony works. Clear, dry evenings after a cold morning are the best; a hazy, humid day usually washes it out. The November and December editions of our India month guides both list Mussoorie for this reason.
Will it snow in Mussoorie in December 2026?
Honest answer: maybe, and more likely late in the month than early. Mussoorie’s altitude is at the lower edge of where December snow settles. In many recent years the town saw its first flakes between Christmas and mid-January, and in some years not until late January. When it does snow, the upper town around Landour, Lal Tibba and the Cloud’s End road whitens first, and the Mall is often just wet.
If snow is the reason for the trip, add a day for Dhanaulti, about 25 km east along the Mussoorie–Chamba road, and Surkanda Devi temple at 2,700 m, reached by a short ropeway from Kaddukhal village (operating since May 2022). Both sit higher and catch snow from the same disturbance that only rains on Mussoorie. For dependable snow in December, compare Himachal: our Himachal snowfall outlook 2026–27 and Shimla in December set expectations honestly.
What should I do in Mussoorie and Landour in December?
- Mall Road: the Library end to the Picture Palace end is a 2 km walk; cycle rickshaws and the Gun Hill ropeway are at the Kulri end. Winter evenings are cold but lively until about 9 pm.
- Landour: the cantonment above Mussoorie. Walk the Chakkar loop past Char Dukan, St Paul’s Church and Kellogg Memorial Church; climb to Lal Tibba, the highest point at about 2,275 m, for the Himalayan panorama in the morning and the Winterline in the evening. Sisters Bazaar has the old cheese-and-jam shop and quiet lanes.
- Kempty Falls: 15 km towards Yamunotri road. In December the flow is modest and the water very cold; go for the drive and the view rather than a swim. The ropeway down to the pool runs when there is demand.
- George Everest’s house (Park Estate): the restored 1830s home of the Surveyor General on the Hathipaon ridge, 6 km from Library Chowk. Go for sunset.
- Cloud’s End and Benog: the forested western end of the ridge; an easy 4–5 km walk from Hathipaon.
Christmas in Mussoorie: churches, carols and the Winterline Carnival
Mussoorie has two of the oldest churches in the Himalaya. Christ Church on Kasmanda Road, near the Library end of the Mall, dates from 1836 and holds a Christmas Eve service; St Paul’s at Char Dukan in Landour, built in 1839, holds a midnight service and a Christmas morning service for the cantonment community. Both are small; arrive early, dress warmly and sit quietly. Woodstock School’s carols and the bakeries at Char Dukan make the 23rd–25th feel like a real festival in a small hill town rather than a commercial event.
The Mussoorie Winterline Carnival is the district administration’s year-end festival, with music on the Mall and at Gandhi Chowk, heritage walks, food stalls and adventure activities around George Everest’s house. It normally runs from 26 to 30 December; in 2025 it opened early on 24 December and ran to 30 December. The 2026 dates had not been announced when we checked on 23 October 2026, so confirm with Uttarakhand Tourism or the Dehradun district site before you build a day around it. Expect the Mall to be closed to vehicles for longer hours during the carnival.
How do I get to Mussoorie from Delhi in December?
The big change this year is the road. The 213 km Delhi–Dehradun Expressway from Akshardham to Dehradun was inaugurated on 14 April 2026 and is fully operational, cutting the drive to about 2.5–3 hours against the old 6; cars paid around ₹670–675 one way in April 2026, with five FASTag toll plazas (Zee News, 16 April 2026). From Dehradun, the climb to Mussoorie is about 35 km and takes an hour to an hour and a half, more on a Saturday afternoon. A door-to-door car from Delhi is therefore a 4–5 hour trip. Leave Delhi by 7 am to arrive for lunch and the Winterline.

With a fourth day, drop down to Rishikesh (about 75 km from Mussoorie via Dehradun) for the Ganga aarti and a yoga morning; our Rishikesh yoga retreat guide explains how to pick an ashram. Kumaon is a separate trip; if the temple at Kainchi is on your list, see Delhi to Kainchi Dham.
Booking, crowds and what to pack
Mussoorie fills twice in winter: Christmas week and the days around New Year. Between 20 December and 5 January expect peak hotel rates, full Landour homestays and slow traffic on the Dehradun road on weekend afternoons. The first three weeks of December are the opposite: empty walks, clear Winterline evenings and off-season rates. Our Uttarakhand packages are custom and priced on request because December rates vary so much by date; send your dates and we will quote in writing.
- Layers: thermal top, fleece, a windproof jacket, cap and gloves for evenings; a light jacket is enough at noon.
- Shoes with grip for the Landour slopes and for any surprise snow.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen; the December sun on the ridge is strong.
- A torch for Landour lanes after dark, and a power bank.
- Cash for rickshaws, the ropeway and small cafés; cards work in most hotels.
- A thermos and a book; Mussoorie evenings are for sitting still.
Frequently asked questions
Is December a good time to visit Mussoorie?
Yes, if you want clear skies, the Winterline and quiet walks rather than certain snow. Days average about 12–13°C and nights 4–5°C, with low rain. The first three weeks are peaceful and cheaper; Christmas to New Year is busy and priced at peak. Carry proper winter layers for evenings, and keep a Dhanaulti day in reserve if you are hoping for snow.
Does Mussoorie get snowfall in December?
Occasionally, and usually late in the month if at all. Mussoorie’s altitude of about 2,000 m is marginal for December snow; many years see the first fall between Christmas and mid-January, and the upper town around Landour whitens before the Mall does. Dhanaulti and Surkanda Devi, about an hour east and higher, get snow more often from the same weather system.
What time is the Winterline visible in Mussoorie?
From roughly 5:15 to 6:00 pm in December, on clear, dry evenings. The season runs from mid-October to late January, peaking in November and December. The best viewpoints are Gun Hill, Lal Tibba in Landour, Camel’s Back Road and the terrace at George Everest’s house. Haze or cloud over the Doon Valley hides it, so check the sky at 4 pm.
How long does it take from Delhi to Mussoorie now?
About 4–5 hours by car. The 213 km Delhi–Dehradun Expressway has been fully operational since 14 April 2026, bringing Dehradun to about 2.5–3 hours from Akshardham; Mussoorie is a further 35 km and 1–1.5 hours uphill. By rail, the Shatabdi 12017 leaves New Delhi at 06:45 and reaches Dehradun at 12:55 daily, per the ConfirmTkt timetable on 23 October 2026.
Where should I stay, Mussoorie or Landour?
Landour for quiet, views and walks; Mall Road for restaurants, the ropeway and easy evenings. Landour is 3–4 km above the Mall by a steep road, with limited parking and a small number of homestays that sell out for Christmas week. Families with young children or older relatives often prefer the Mall side; couples and walkers prefer Landour. Both work for the Winterline.
What happens in Mussoorie at Christmas and New Year?
Christ Church (1836) and St Paul’s, Landour (1839) hold Christmas Eve and Christmas morning services; Char Dukan bakeries and Woodstock carols set the tone. The district’s Winterline Carnival normally runs 26–30 December with music on the Mall, heritage walks and food stalls; 2026 dates were unannounced on 23 October 2026. New Year’s Eve is crowded, so book dinner and parking in advance.
