Road tips for Dehradun to Mussoorie
Register your Mussoorie trip online
Since August 2025 every tourist group is asked to register on the Dehradun Smart City portal before entering Mussoorie: names, vehicle number, dates and hotel, verified by OTP. It is free and takes a few minutes; police check the receipt at Kincraig and Picture Palace.
Weekend traffic plans
On crowded weekends Dehradun Police run a staged plan (June 2026): normal route via Kuthal Gate first, then diversions via Kimadi–Hathipaon with parking at Kincraig, and local taxis into town once parking is full. A Friday or early Saturday arrival avoids most of it; tell us your hotel and we time the pickup.
Kolhukhet in the monsoon
This road is the only motor link and it slips in heavy rain: in July 2026 a retaining wall collapsed near Kolhukhet and only light vehicles were let through for a day, and in September 2025 rain cut the road and stranded tourists in Mussoorie. From July to September we watch advisories and adjust your start time.
Mall Road and Landour on foot
Mall Road and the lanes around Landour are narrow and partly closed to cars in the evening. The driver drops you at the nearest allowed point or your hotel’s parking; for an uphill hotel, ask the hotel to send a porter.
Kempty Falls and Dhanaulti
Kempty Falls is about 15 km past Mussoorie and Dhanaulti about 25 km the other way. Add one to your drop, or book the car for the day and do both.
The ropeway is not running yet
A 5.5 km Dehradun–Mussoorie ropeway from Purkul to near Gandhi Chowk is being built; in August 2025 the state targeted end-2026. Until it opens, the road is the only way up.

Do I need to register before going to Mussoorie?
Uttarakhand asks every visitor to register online on the Dehradun Smart City portal since August 2025. It is free, needs your vehicle number (we send it to you) and the receipt can be shown on your phone at Kincraig or Picture Palace.

Yes, it stays open most of the year. Snow on this road is occasional; after a fresh fall the upper stretch near Mussoorie can be slow for a day. In heavy monsoon rain it can be shut for hours after a slip near Kolhukhet; we confirm the day before.
