How do I choose a yoga retreat in India?
Start with Rishikesh, on the Ganga 228 km (142 miles) from Delhi and often called the yoga capital of the world. Decide between a short retreat, a 200-hour teacher training or a silent meditation course, then check the school’s registration yourself (Yoga Alliance or India’s Yoga Certification Board). Travel on an e-Tourist visa, which covers short yoga programmes, and book the car from Delhi separately.
How to choose a yoga retreat in Rishikesh — five steps
Rishikesh has a great many ashrams, schools and retreat centres. We don’t recommend or sell any of them — this is the checklist we would use ourselves.
- Decide what you want from itA gentle week of daily classes, a 200-hour teacher training, or a silent meditation course are very different experiences. Pick one before you compare places.
- Check registration yourselfTeacher trainings often say they are Yoga Alliance registered (RYS) — look the school up on yogaalliance.org. India’s own Yoga Certification Board, under the Ministry of Ayush, certifies yoga professionals and accredits institutions. A listing is a starting point, not a guarantee.
- Read the daily schedule and house rulesWake-up time, hours of practice, silence, food, phones, what happens if you miss a session. Ashrams can be strict; that is part of the point.
- Ask what the fee coversRoom type, meals, course materials, certificate, airport transfer. Pay the retreat directly and keep its written confirmation.
- Plan the journey around itArrive a day early, leave a day spare at the end, and book the transfer from Delhi or Dehradun airport — that part we can do for you.
Retreat, teacher training or silent course?
| Programme | What it is | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Short yoga retreat | Daily classes, meditation and ashram life for a few days to a few weeks | Class levels, who teaches, room and food, cancellation terms |
| 200-hour teacher training | An intensive course; Yoga Alliance’s RYS 200 standard is 200 hours, taught in person, online or a mix — ask how much is in person | The school’s RYS listing on yogaalliance.org, lead trainers, the syllabus |
| Vipassana (10-day silent course) | Courses in the Goenka tradition (dhamma.org) are run solely on a donation basis; you apply online and wait for an acceptance email | Apply weeks ahead — the reply can take up to two weeks; read the code of discipline |
| Drop-in classes | Classes you join by the day while staying in a hotel | Good if yoga is one part of a wider India trip |
Retreat and course fees are set and paid to the retreat itself. We don’t add a commission and don’t recommend a particular ashram or school.
When to go to Rishikesh
February–March: festival week
Uttarakhand’s Tourism Department and GMVN hold a week-long International Yoga Festival in Rishikesh; the 2026 edition closed on 22 March with more than 2,500 participants from India and abroad. Book rooms early for that week.
July–August: monsoon
Rafting on the Ganga is usually suspended for the monsoon, and in wet years it can stop earlier when the river rises. Ask your retreat how its programme runs in the monsoon.
The rest of the year
Rafting runs for about ten months a year outside the monsoon. Searches from abroad peak in October, January and February — book early for those months.
Check the forecast
For current weather and any river or road warnings, check India Meteorological Department (mausam.imd.gov.in) before you travel. We tell you about road conditions when we quote.

Visa for a yoga course in India
India’s e-Tourist Visa lists attending a short-term yoga programme as an allowed purpose, as long as you have no other purpose or activity. Apply only at the official site indianvisaonline.gov.in — beware look-alike sites that charge extra — at least 4 days before arrival. The e-Visa cannot be extended or converted. We are not a visa agency; see our step-by-step e-Visa guide.
Rishikesh beyond the yoga mat
Triveni Ghat
The most popular bathing ghat in Rishikesh, at the traditional meeting point of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.
Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula
The two famous suspension-bridge landmarks across the Ganga; Ram Jhula was built in 1986.
The Beatles connection
The Beatles came to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram in Rishikesh in the 1960s — the reason many visitors first heard the town’s name.
River and hills
White-water rafting, canoeing and bungee jumping; Neer Garh waterfall; the Neelkanth Mahadev temple; Rajaji National Park around 20 km (12 mi) away.
What Suzu Travels does — and doesn't do
We are a registered travel agent in Himachal Pradesh, not a yoga school. We don’t run retreats, take a cut from ashrams or tell you which one to choose. What we do is the travel around it: airport pick-up in Delhi or Dehradun, a private car with an English-speaking driver to Rishikesh, hotels before and after, and the rest of your India trip.
Many guests add the Taj Mahal before the retreat, or the Himalayas after it, or the Char Dham temples. Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip.
Yoga, fasting and detox programmes are not medical treatment. If you have a health condition, an injury or are pregnant, consult your doctor before you book; see CDC or NHS Fit for Travel for India.
Questions travellers ask
Do I need a special visa for a yoga retreat in India?
For a short-term yoga programme, the e-Tourist Visa is enough — the official list of purposes includes attending a short-term yoga programme. Apply only at indianvisaonline.gov.in, at least 4 days before you arrive. Longer or formal study may need a different visa; check the official site.
Why Rishikesh for yoga?
Incredible India, the Government of India’s tourism site, describes Rishikesh as often called the yoga capital of the world. It sits on the Ganga, it is where the Beatles came to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram in the 1960s, and it hosts an International Yoga Festival every February–March.
How do I get from Delhi to Rishikesh?
By private car it is 228 km (142 miles). You can also fly from Delhi to Dehradun’s Jolly Grant airport, 30 km (19 miles) from Rishikesh, take a train to Rishikesh station, or a bus from Delhi.
How do I check that a yoga teacher training is genuine?
Look the school up yourself on yogaalliance.org if it claims Yoga Alliance registration, or ask whether it or its teachers hold Yoga Certification Board (Ministry of Ayush) accreditation. Read the syllabus, ask who the lead trainers are, and pay only against a written confirmation.
When is the best time for a retreat in Rishikesh?
Check your retreat’s own dates first. February–March brings the International Yoga Festival; July–August is monsoon, when rafting on the Ganga is usually suspended. Interest from abroad peaks around October, January and February, so book early for those months.
Is a Vipassana course free?
Vipassana courses in the Goenka tradition, listed on dhamma.org, are run solely on a donation basis. You apply online and may wait up to two weeks for an acceptance email, so apply well before your flights.
Can I combine a retreat with the Taj Mahal or the Himalayas?
Yes. A common plan is Delhi and the Taj Mahal first, then Rishikesh, then the Himachal hills or the Char Dham temples. We arrange the car, driver and hotels; you book the retreat directly.
Does Suzu Travels run yoga retreats?
No. We are a travel company, not a yoga school, and we don’t recommend a particular ashram. We arrange the transport, hotels and the rest of your trip around the retreat you choose.
