Himachal Tour Package for Family
The best Himachal tour package for a family is the one with the fewest long driving days for the youngest and oldest person in the car. That matters more than the hotel or the number of sights. Suzu Travels runs eight Himachal trips that suit families. All of them are private, with your own vehicle and driver, breakfast and dinner every day, and a pace you can change. This page compares them by what families actually ask about: how many hours are spent on the road, how high the trip goes, which start city saves a day, and what it costs for four people.
Quick answer: for a first family trip, take Shimla and Manali from Chandigarh (5 nights). If you must start in Delhi, the Shimla Manali trip from Delhi is priced for four people sharing a car, which suits a family of four. With grandparents or small children, the gentlest option is Dharamshala and Dalhousie from Pathankot: the drive from Pathankot to Dharamshala takes about 3 hours.

Family season calendar: the months that cost more and the months that don’t
Family travel tends to fall in the same few weeks: school summer holidays, Diwali and the Christmas–New Year break. Those weeks are our peak season, and the rate goes up by a fixed 25%. These are the exact dates we use:
- Off-season (the rates in the table): 1 July – 30 September, 1 November – 19 December, and 6 January – 14 March.
- Peak season (off-season rate + 25%): 15 March – 30 June (this covers most school summer holidays), the whole of October (Dussehra and Diwali), and 20 December – 5 January.
Example: a trip shown at ₹12,499 off-season is priced 25% higher if your dates fall in peak. If your children’s holidays let you go between 1 November and 19 December, you get off-season rates, clear mountain views and a much quieter Mall Road. If you are planning for this Diwali, see our Diwali holidays in Himachal guide for the dates and the crowd picture.
What a family of four actually pays
All the rates above are per person on twin sharing. That means two people in one room. A family of four usually books one of two ways:
- Two rooms: four people at the twin-sharing rate. This is the simplest way to compare, and it works well with teenagers.
- One room with extra beds or a family room: often cheaper for parents with young children, but it depends on what the hotel allows on your dates. Tell us the ages of the children and we will quote the right rooms instead of guessing.
Starting in Delhi costs more than starting in Chandigarh. The hotels are the same, but the car drives an extra long day on the plains at each end of the trip. Our Delhi Shimla–Manali rate already assumes four people share the car. That is why it is a better fit for families than for couples. See every Himachal tour package from Delhi and every package from Chandigarh to compare the start cities.
Choosing the right trip for your family
Count the long driving days, not the sights
Children get restless and grandparents get stiff on long mountain drives, not short ones. On the Shimla–Manali circuit, the drive from Shimla to Manali takes most of a day. The Dharamshala–Dalhousie trips are gentler: Pathankot to Dharamshala is about 3 hours, and Dharamshala to Dalhousie about 4. If you only have time for one of the two, our Dharamshala vs Dalhousie guide helps you choose. If anyone in your family gets car-sick on hill roads, choose the Pathankot start. Also tell your driver at the start. He will plan stops and keep the pace slower on the bends.
Altitude: where it matters and where it doesn’t
Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie are ordinary hill-station heights. Manali town is at about 6,700 ft, and altitude sickness is rare there. Things change only if you go much higher. Rohtang Pass is around 13,050 ft, and it is an optional add-on that needs a permit. If you are travelling with infants, elderly parents or anyone with heart or breathing problems, skip it or ask a doctor first. Our Rohtang permit and road status page explains how the permit works and which roads are open.
Snow with children
If snow is the main reason for the trip, travel between late December and February. That is when Solang Valley near Manali is most reliably white. Even then, nobody can promise snow on a given date. Children need proper snow suits and boots. These can be rented in Manali, so you do not have to pack them. The snow-day options are on our snow activities in Manali page.
Pick the vehicle for your family size
Package rates are for a sedan. Families of five or more need a bigger vehicle, and we quote the correct size rather than squeezing everyone in. An Ertiga, Kia Carens or Innova Crysta suits five to seven people with luggage. A Tempo Traveller or Urbania suits a joint family or two families travelling together. See the options on our cabs page, and for groups of ten or more, read how we plan group trips to Manali.
What is included on all eight
All eight trips include your own private vehicle and driver for the whole route, hotel stays, breakfast and dinner every day, and tolls, parking and driver allowances. They do not include flights or train tickets to the start city, lunches, monument and activity tickets, or Rohtang Pass permits and local taxi charges. Each trip’s page lists its exact inclusions and exclusions. For a day-by-day example of how a family spends five days in Manali, read 5 days in Manali with family.
Tell us who is travelling and we will match the trip to them. Send us the dates, the number of adults, and the children’s ages. Also mention any grandparents, and the city you are starting from. The quote comes back with real rates for your dates and the right rooms and vehicle. You will not get a sample rate.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best Himachal tour package for a family?
For most families visiting Himachal for the first time, it is Shimla and Manali in 5 nights from Chandigarh, from ₹12,499 per person off-season. If you have elderly parents or very young children, choose Dharamshala and Dalhousie from Pathankot, which has shorter drives. If you have nine days in the summer holidays, the 8-night Incredible Himachal trip covers all four main hill stations.
How many days are enough for a Himachal family trip?
Five or six days covers two hill stations without rushing. Eight nights or more lets you add Dharamshala and Dalhousie without anyone getting tired of the car.
Is Himachal safe for children and senior citizens?
Yes, on the hill-station circuits. Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie are at moderate altitude, and every trip uses a private vehicle with a driver who knows the hill roads. The higher places are Rohtang Pass and Spiti. For infants and anyone with heart or breathing conditions, decide about those only after asking a doctor.
When is the cheapest time for a family trip to Himachal?
The off-season windows: 1 November – 19 December, 6 January – 14 March, and 1 July – 30 September. Peak dates (15 March – 30 June, all of October, and 20 December – 5 January) are priced 25% higher. Many school holidays fall inside peak, so book early if those are your only dates.
Do you charge for children?
Child rates depend on the child’s age and on whether they share the parents’ bed or need an extra bed. Hotels set these rules, and they vary. Send us the children’s ages with your dates and the quote will show it clearly. Nothing is added after you approve the quote.
Can we change the itinerary for our family?
Yes. On all eight trips you can change the start city, the number of nights in each place, the hotel grade and the vehicle size. Send the changes with your dates and we will re-quote. Every package we run in the state is on the Himachal tour packages page.
