What is the Vaishno Devi Yatra and how does it work?
The Vaishno Devi Yatra is a walk of about 12–13 km one way from Katra to the holy cave (Bhawan) on the Trikuta hill in Jammu & Kashmir, plus about 1.5 km more to Bhairon temple. Every pilgrim needs a free RFID Yatra card, checked at Banganga. The shrine is open all year; helicopter, battery car and ropeway tickets are sold only by the Shrine Board.
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi is worshipped in a cave on the three-peaked Trikuta hill in the Reasi district of Jammu & Kashmir. There is no idol: inside the cave are three natural rock pindis revered as Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. The base town is Katra, and the shrine is run by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.
Vaishno Devi is not part of the classical lists of 51 Shakti Peeths, but it is one of the most visited Devi shrines in India and is remembered as the elder sister in the Himachal Nau Devi yatra. Many families combine it with the Shakti Peeths of Himachal — Chamunda Devi is about 241 km from Katra by road via Pathankot.
The story of Mata Vaishno Devi
This is the popular tradition of the shrine, retold in our own words as devotees tell it — a story of faith, not history.
- Vaishnavi waits on TrikutaIt is believed the Goddess was born as Vaishnavi, uniting the powers of Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswati, and that Rama asked her to wait for him in the Trikuta hills.
- Pandit Shridhar's feastA divine girl is said to have helped the devotee Pandit Shridhar of Hansali village at his feast. Searching for her afterwards, he was led to the holy cave.
- Banganga and ArdhkuwariWhen the tantric Bhairon Nath chased her up the hill, she struck the ground with an arrow to bring out the Banganga stream, rested at Charan Paduka and stayed nine months in the narrow Ardhkuwari (Garbh Joon) cave.
- Forgiveness at BhaironAt the holy cave she took the form of Mahakali and ended the chase. His head is said to have fallen where the Bhairon temple stands; she forgave him and declared the yatra complete only after visiting his shrine.
That is why pilgrims walk the same path the story follows — Banganga, Charan Paduka, Ardhkuwari, the Bhawan — and then climb on to Bhairon Nath before coming down.

Before you go
- CarryYour RFID card and photo ID, comfortable walking shoes, light woollens (nights are cool), a water bottle and a rain jacket in the monsoon.
- Leave behindLeather items and large bags are restricted at the Bhawan; mobiles and cameras are deposited in the cloak rooms before darshan.
- Elders and heart patientsNo medical certificate is needed, but the climb is long. Use the helicopter, a battery car, a pony or a palki, and the seniors’ help desks.
- Weather and safetyHeavy rain has stopped the yatra before — a landslide near Ardhkuwari in August 2025 and a six-day halt in July 2026. Follow Shrine Board advisories and keep a spare day in the monsoon.
- Beware of fake sitesThe only official sites are maavaishnodevi.org and online.maavaishnodevi.org. Pages with names like “.live” or “devasthan” are not the Shrine Board.
- Complete the yatraBy tradition the yatra is complete only after darshan at Bhairon Nath, about 1.5 km above the Bhawan.
Vaishno Devi registration: the RFID Yatra card
Every pilgrim needs their own RFID Yatra Access Card. It is free. Get it at the Yatri Registration Counter (YRC) near the Katra bus stand, at YRC-II near the second bus stand on the Udhampur road (about 1 km away), or online on online.maavaishnodevi.org. The card is checked at the Banganga check post, about 1.5 km from the counter — without it you will be turned back.
- Register on the official portal or at a Katra counter with a photo ID.
- Collect or activate your RFID card — one per person, children included.
- Start the climb within the time limit printed on your card.
- Under the December 2025 rules, plan to be back in Katra within 24 hours — check maavaishnodevi.org for the current rule.
Sources give different start limits (6, 10 or 12 hours), so go by what is printed on your card. In heavy rush the Shrine Board can pause registration for the day; daily numbers are capped at roughly 30,000–35,000.
Vaishno Devi helicopter, battery car and ropeway
The helicopter flies from the Katra (Serli) helipad to Sanjichhat — not to the Bhawan. From Sanjichhat you walk about 2.5 km to the holy cave. Battery cars run between Ardhkuwari and the Bhawan, with priority for seniors and the disabled, and a passenger ropeway links the Bhawan with Bhairon temple, roughly 9 am to 5 pm. Ponies, palkis and pithoos are available on the track at rates fixed by the authorities.
Book helicopter, battery car and ropeway tickets only on online.maavaishnodevi.org or at Shrine Board counters. Look-alike websites and WhatsApp sellers offering “confirmed helicopter tickets” are not the Shrine Board — never pay them. Helpline 1800-180-7212.
