Where is Mahakaleshwar temple and why is it sacred?
Shri Mahakaleshwar temple stands in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, near the Shipra river, about 55 km from Indore. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, where Shiva is worshipped as Mahakala, the lord of time — and the only one of the twelve that faces south. Its Bhasma Aarti begins at about 4 am and must be booked online.
Ujjain — the ancient Avanti, or Avantika — is one of Hinduism’s seven sacred cities, and Baba Mahakal is its guardian. Pilgrims usually bathe at Ram Ghat on the Shipra, walk through the Shri Mahakal Lok corridor and take darshan of the self-manifested (svayambhu) linga. Many also try to attend the Bhasma Aarti, the temple’s famous pre-dawn ritual. The temple is open all year.
According to temple tradition, the shrine rises in three levels: Mahakaleshwar at the bottom, an Omkareshwar shrine in the middle, and Nagchandreshwar at the top, which opens for just one day a year on Nag Panchami. The middle-level shrine is not the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, which stands on the Narmada about 140 km away.
The legend of Mahakaleshwar
The Koti Rudra Samhita of the Shiva Purana tells how Shiva came to stay in Avanti as Mahakala. This is how tradition tells it.
- A family of devoteesIn Avanti lived a learned Brahmin, Vedapriya, whose four sons worshipped an earthen linga every single day.
- The demon DushanaStrengthened by a boon from Brahma, the demon Dushana came down from the Ratnamala hills and set about stopping all prayer in the city. The family kept chanting Shiva’s name.
- Mahakal risesAs the demon rushed at them, it is believed the earth beside their linga split open and Shiva rose in his fearsome Mahakala form — with a single roar, Dushana was reduced to ash.
- The city's guardianThe devotees begged him to stay and protect Avanti for ever. Tradition holds that he remained here as the self-born, south-facing Mahakaleshwar.
The same tradition tells of King Chandrasena and a young cowherd, Shrikhar, whose devotion protected Ujjain. South is the direction of death, and as Mahakala — lord of time and death — Shiva here faces south. These are stories of faith, told as tradition rather than history. Mahakaleshwar is third in the Shiva Purana’s list of the twelve Jyotirlingas and in the Dwadasha Jyotirlinga stotram (उज्जयिन्यां महाकालम्).

How to book the Mahakal Bhasma Aarti
The Bhasma Aarti is performed before dawn, starting at about 4 am every day, when the jyotirlinga is anointed with sacred ash. In the past the ash was said to come from a cremation pyre; today it is prepared from cow dung, according to MP Tourism.
Entry needs a prior online booking on the temple’s official website — MP Tourism advises booking about a month ahead. Since 22 June 2026 the temple committee allows one Bhasma Aarti permission per mobile number every 90 days, VIP protocol included. Arrive an hour or more before the time on your pass.
For worship in the sanctum, including the Bhasma Aarti, men wear a dhoti and women a saree. Booking procedures have changed several times in 2026, so check the rules on the official website before you travel — and ignore agents or look-alike sites selling “tatkal” or “VIP” passes.
A short history of Mahakaleshwar temple
In 1234–35 Sultan Iltutmish raided Ujjain and the temple complex was destroyed. It was rebuilt in the 18th century under Maratha (Scindia) rule by Diwan Ramachandra (Baba) Sukthankar.
On 11 October 2022 the Prime Minister dedicated Phase I of the Shri Mahakal Lok corridor, a wide landscaped approach to the temple.
