Where is Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga and why is it sacred?
Shri Omkareshwar temple stands on Mandhata island in the Narmada, in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh — about 77 km from Indore airport. It is the fourth of the 12 Jyotirlingas, where Shiva is worshipped as the Lord of Om. Tradition treats Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar on the south bank as one Jyotirlinga, so pilgrims visit both. Darshan runs from 5 am to 10:30 pm.
Omkareshwar is a temple town on the Narmada, where the river wraps around Mandhata (Shivapuri) island near its meeting with the Kaveri. The island is believed to resemble the sacred syllable Om — and so Shiva here is Omkareshwar, the Lord of Omkara. Pilgrims cross by footbridge or boat, take darshan in the island temple, then visit Mamleshwar (also called Amaleshwar) on the south bank. The temple is open all year and is managed by the Shri Omkareshwar Mandir Trust.
Two things are easy to confuse: the Omkareshwar temple at Ukhimath in Uttarakhand is Kedarnath’s winter seat, and the small Omkareshwar shrine on the middle level of Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain is also a different shrine. The Jyotirlinga is the one on the Narmada.
The legend of Omkareshwar
The Koti Rudra Samhita of the Shiva Purana tells how Shiva came to dwell on the Narmada in two forms. This is how tradition tells it.
- Vindhya's wounded prideThe sage Narada once praised Mount Meru in front of the Vindhya mountain. Hurt, Vindhya longed for a greatness of his own.
- Penance by the NarmadaThe mountain went to the banks of the Narmada, shaped a linga of earth and worshipped Shiva with long, single-minded devotion.
- Shiva in two formsIt is believed Shiva appeared and granted Vindhya’s wish — and, at the request of the gods and sages, agreed to remain here as Omkareshwar and Amaleshwar.
- The island of OmBecause the island, circled by the Narmada, is said to resemble the syllable Om, Shiva here is worshipped as the Lord of Omkara.
Another tradition remembers Mandhata, a king of the Ikshvaku line, whose devotion gave the island its name. According to tradition, Adi Shankaracharya met his guru Govinda Bhagavatpada here. These are stories of faith, told as tradition rather than history. The Shiva Purana names the shrine “ओङ्कारे परमेश्वरम्”, while the popular Dwadasha Jyotirlinga smaranam says “ओङ्कारममलेश्वरम्” — Omkareshwar and Amaleshwar together.

Omkareshwar or Mamleshwar — which is the Jyotirlinga?
Both. Tradition and the Dwadasha Jyotirlinga stotra treat Omkareshwar on Mandhata island and Mamleshwar (Amaleshwar) on the south bank of the Narmada as one Jyotirlinga in two aspects. The Shiva Purana’s list says “Omkare Parameshwaram”; the smaranam says “Omkaram Amaleshwaram”.
Pilgrims therefore take darshan at both. Mamleshwar is about 1 km from the island temple, across the river by footbridge or boat.
A short history of Omkareshwar temple
The temple was built in the 11th century under the Paramara kings of Malwa, and later came under Chauhan rulers. In the 18th century the Holkars rebuilt it — the work was begun under Gautama Bai Holkar and completed by Ahilyabai Holkar.
On 21 September 2023 a 108-ft “Statue of Oneness” of Adi Shankaracharya was unveiled at Ekatma Dham on Mandhata island.
