Where is Kedarnath temple and how does the yatra work?

Kedarnath temple stands at about 3,583 m at the head of the Mandakini valley in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Pilgrims register free, drive to Sonprayag, take a shuttle to Gaurikund and walk about 16 km — or fly from Guptkashi, Phata or Sersi, booked only on IRCTC HeliYatra. The temple is open from late April to around Bhai Dooj.

Kedarnath is the most demanding of the Jyotirlingas to reach, and for many families the most moving. The temple sits in a wide glacial bowl below snow peaks, with the Mandakini rising nearby. It is managed by the Shri Badarinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC). The doors open each spring and close for winter around Bhai Dooj, when the deity’s doli moves down to the Omkareshwar temple at Ukhimath.

Two things are easy to mix up: the Omkareshwar temple at Ukhimath is Kedarnath’s winter seat, not the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga on the Narmada; and the highest Shiva temple in the world is Tungnath, while Kedarnath is the highest Jyotirlinga. Kedarnath is 5th in the Shiva Purana list and 11th in the popular smaranam stotra (“हिमालये तु केदारं”).

The legend

The legend of Kedarnath

The Mahabharata cycle and the Shiva Purana tell how Shiva came to stay in the Garhwal Himalaya. This is how tradition tells it.

  1. The Pandavas seek forgivenessAfter the Kurukshetra war, the five brothers went looking for Shiva, hoping to be freed from the sin of killing their own kin.
  2. A bull among the herdsShiva did not wish to be found so easily. It is believed he hid in the Garhwal hills as a bull among grazing cattle.
  3. Bhima stands across the valleyBhima planted his feet on two hillsides so the herd had to pass beneath him. One bull refused — and the brothers knew it was the Lord.
  4. The hump remainsAs the bull sank into the earth, Bhima caught its hump. Tradition says it remained at Kedarnath, worshipped as a rock form rather than a carved idol.

Tradition places the other parts of the bull at the other four Panch Kedar shrines — Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar — though the lists of which part fell where vary by source. The Shiva Purana adds that Shiva chose to dwell here as a Jyotirlinga at the prayer of the sages Nara and Narayana. These are stories of faith, told as tradition rather than history.

Shankaracharya to Bhim Shila

A short history of Kedarnath temple

According to tradition, Adi Shankaracharya revived the temple in the 8th century CE; the BKTC credits the present stone structure to him, beside an earlier Pandava-era shrine. His samadhi lies behind the temple, where a 12-ft statue of the saint was unveiled on 5 November 2021.

In the floods of 16–17 June 2013 the town was devastated but the temple survived: a large boulder behind it diverted the debris. Pilgrims now worship it as Bhim Shila, believed to have shielded the shrine.
