Delhi to Katra by road, stop by stop
The route our drivers take, with the stops worth making.
- DelhiPickup from home, hotel, IGI Airport T1/T3, New Delhi, Old Delhi or Nizamuddin station; Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad too.
- Murthal · PanipatThe classic first halt: parantha breakfast at the Murthal dhabas about 45 km out. Getting here before 6:30 am keeps you ahead of the Panipat traffic.
- Karnal · AmbalaWide six-lane NH44 through Haryana. At Ambala the Chandigarh and Shimla roads branch off; your car stays on the highway towards Punjab.
- LudhianaAbout the halfway point and the usual lunch stop. Weekday city traffic can cost half an hour, so drivers time it or use the elevated road.
- Jalandhar · MukerianNorth from Jalandhar through the Doaba farmland. Mukerian is the last big Punjab town before the road meets the hills at Pathankot.
- PathankotJunction for Dalhousie and Dharamshala and a good tea stop. Katra is still roughly 160 km — around three and a half hours — ahead.
- Lakhanpur · KathuaYou cross the Ravi into Jammu & Kashmir at Lakhanpur, where vehicles can be stopped for a short security check. Keep photo ID for every adult handy.
- Samba · JammuThe highway runs along the Shivalik foothills past Samba to Jammu. A quick halt is possible if anyone wants to stop at Jammu city or the Raghunath temple.
- Nagrota · Katra roadFrom Nagrota on the north side of Jammu the road turns off for Katra — about 45–50 km and roughly an hour and a half of gentle climbing with the Trikuta hills in view.
- KatraDrop at your hotel, near the main bus stand where the Shrine Board’s Yatri Registration Counter is, or at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station. Vehicles stop in Katra — the yatra itself is on foot, pony, battery car or helicopter.

Road tips for Delhi to Katra
Leave before sunrise
It is a full day on the road. A 4:30–5 am start from Delhi gets you past Panipat and Ludhiana before the traffic builds and into Katra by late afternoon, with daylight for the last hill stretch from Nagrota.
Register the RFID card the right way
Every pilgrim needs a free RFID yatra card from the Shrine Board, issued at the counters near the Katra bus stand and on Udhampur Road. You must cross the Banganga check post within six hours of getting it, so if you arrive in the evening and want to start the climb next morning, collect the card in the morning — not the night before.
ID at the J&K entry
At Lakhanpur on the Punjab–J&K border cars can be stopped for a security check. Keep an Aadhaar, passport or driving licence for each adult within reach; it usually takes only a few minutes.
The new expressway, in parts
The Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway is opening section by section — about 158 km in Haryana and a 31 km stretch near Jalandhar were inaugurated in July 2026, and full completion is targeted for March 2027. Until then most of the drive is on NH44; your driver uses an open stretch only where it really saves time.
Winter fog and peak rush
Dense fog is common on the Haryana–Punjab plains from mid-December to January; on such mornings we start after first light and add an hour. Navratri and the Christmas–New Year week are the busiest at Katra — book the car and hotel early for those dates.
Make it a round trip
Most pilgrims come back the same way after darshan. A round trip is billed per kilometre driven with a 250 km daily minimum plus driver allowance, so keeping one car for Delhi–Katra–Delhi costs about the same as two one-way drops in a sedan and noticeably less in an Innova Crysta or Tempo Traveller — and adding Amritsar or Patnitop on the way is easy.

Questions travellers ask
How much is a taxi from Delhi to Katra?
One-way fares start around ₹7,099 for a hatchback, ₹8,199 for a sedan, ₹10,399 for an Ertiga, ₹11,999 for a Kia Carens and ₹14,199 for an Innova Crysta. A 12-seater Tempo Traveller starts around ₹27,799. Tolls, parking and state entry charges are extra at actuals; peak dates cost more.
What is the distance from Delhi to Katra by road?
About 630–650 km depending on your pickup point in Delhi NCR. The route is NH44 through Haryana and Punjab to Pathankot and Jammu, then about 45–50 km up the Nagrota road to Katra.
How long does Delhi to Katra take by taxi?
Around 11–12 hours with a breakfast, a lunch and a couple of tea stops. A 4:30–5 am start is best; leaving late or hitting weekday traffic in Ludhiana and Jalandhar can stretch it to 13 hours.
Is the Katra to Delhi taxi fare the same?
Yes. The same one-way fares apply from any Katra hotel, the bus stand area or Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station to anywhere in Delhi NCR, including IGI Airport. If you come down from the Bhawan late, start the next morning rather than driving through the night.
Where will the taxi drop us in Katra?
At your hotel, near the main bus stand where the Shrine Board’s Yatri Registration Counter is, or at the railway station. Cars cannot go beyond Katra — the walk to the Bhawan starts at Banganga, about 1.5 km from the counter, and the helicopter flies from the Katra helipad.
Can we visit the Golden Temple on the way?
Yes. Going via Amritsar adds roughly 80–100 km to the drive, so most families make it a night halt — Delhi to Amritsar on day one, Amritsar to Katra on day two. That is billed as a round trip or tour per kilometre; tell us your plan and we quote it all-in.
Is a round trip cheaper than two one-way taxis?
In a sedan it comes out about the same: a 3-day Delhi–Katra–Delhi round trip starts around ₹16,199, against ₹8,199 for each one-way leg — but the car and driver wait for you in Katra. In bigger cars the round trip is clearly cheaper: an Innova Crysta for 3 days starts around ₹25,199 versus ₹14,199 each way. Round trips are billed per kilometre (250 km daily minimum) plus ₹400 a night driver allowance.
Is the Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway open?
Only in parts. About 158 km in Haryana and a 31 km section near Jalandhar opened in July 2026, and the Pathankot–Dayalachak stretch is expected around December 2026; the whole corridor is targeted for March 2027. For now taxis use NH44 for most of the way.
