Where is Chamunda Devi temple and why is it sacred?
Chamunda Devi temple (Shri Chamunda Nandikeshwar Dham) stands at Padar on the Baner river in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, about 15 km from Dharamshala on the Palampur road. It honours Chamunda, the fierce form of the Devi who slew Chanda and Munda, with Shiva as Nandikeshwar in a cave behind. It is one of Himachal’s five great Devi shrines.
Mata Chamunda’s temple sits low in the valley, beside the rushing Baner river, with the snow wall of the Dhauladhar rising behind it. The sanctum holds the Devi, draped mostly in red, with Hanuman and Bhairav on either side of the door. Behind the temple, a short flight of marble steps leads down to a cave where Shiva is worshipped as Nandikeshwar in a natural linga — which is why the shrine is called Chamunda Nandikeshwar Dham, a place where Shiva and Shakti are honoured together.
Chamunda is the last stop of the five Shakti Peeths of Himachal circuit, after Naina Devi, Chintpurni, Jwala Ji and Brajeshwari, and one of the shrines of the Nau Devi Yatra. Local lore counts it a Shakti Peeth, though it is not in the classical 51 or 52 lists. Please note: this guide is about the Kangra temple — Chamundeshwari on Chamundi Hills (Mysuru), Chamunda Mata at Mehrangarh (Jodhpur) and Chamunda Tekri (Dewas) are different shrines.
The story of Chamunda Devi
The Devi Mahatmya tells how the Goddess got her name, and Kangra remembers how she came down from the snows. This is how the stories are told.
- A power from the browIn the Devi’s war against the asuras Shumbha and Nishumbha, their generals Chanda and Munda marched against her. It is said that from her frowning brow sprang a dark, fearsome warrior goddess.
- Chanda and Munda fallThe warrior goddess overcame both generals, and the Devi named her Chamunda after them. Some retellings link this fierce form with Kali.
- A priest's dreamIn Kangra, tradition says that about four centuries ago a king and a priest prayed for leave to bring the Devi down from her remote, snowbound hilltop shrine. She showed the priest in a dream where her old image lay buried.
- Down to the riverThe king’s men could not move the image, but the priest, after bathing and coming in clean clothes with reverence, lifted it alone — and the shrine was set up here by the Baner river.
The story comes from the Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati, chapter 7) in the Markandeya Purana, and from Kangra’s own temple tradition. We retell it in our own words, as faith and tradition rather than history.

Aadi Himani Chamunda: the trek to the Devi's first seat
High on the Chandar Bhan ridge above the valley stands Aadi Himani Chamunda, the hilltop shrine that tradition calls the Devi’s original seat — the snowbound temple from the legend. It sits at about 3,000 m (sources differ) and is reached by a trek of about 9–13 km one way, roughly 5–7 hours, from Jia village or from Jadrangal / Kardiana, the last points a vehicle can reach.
The trail is rated moderate to challenging. The shrine is open from about 15 March to 15 November and closed in winter snow; April–June and September–October are the best months. The old temple was damaged by fire in 2014 and has since been rebuilt, and there is a basic rest house. This trek is not suitable for elders or anyone with heart or knee problems — the main temple by the river is the easy darshan.
