बाबा बैद्यनाथ धामWhere Shiva healed his devotee as the Lord of Physicians.

Baba Baidyanath Dham stands in the heart of Deoghar in Jharkhand — not to be confused with Baijnath in Himachal. The Ravana legend, the temple’s darshan hours, the Shravani Mela when kanwariyas walk from Sultanganj with Ganga water, the three shrines that claim the name, and the easy ways to reach.

Where is Baidyanath temple and what are its timings?

Baba Baidyanath Dham is in Deoghar town, Jharkhand, and is the most widely accepted of the 12 Jyotirlingas‘ Vaidyanath. The temple’s website lists darshan from 4 am to 4 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm, with longer hours in Shravan and on Mahashivratri. Deoghar Airport is about 9 km away; Jasidih Junction about 7 km.

Deoghar means “abode of the gods”, and for millions of Shiva devotees in eastern India it simply means Baba Dham. Here Shiva is worshipped as Vaidyanath — vaidya means physician — the Lord who heals. The Deoghar district administration describes the shrine as both one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and one of the 51 Shakti Peeths, a rare pairing in one place.

The Shiva Purana’s list places Vaidyanath “चिताभूमौ” — in the land of the cremation ground — and tradition reads that as Deoghar. Every Shravan the town fills with saffron-clad kanwariyas who have walked from the Ganga at Sultanganj in Bihar to pour its water on the linga.

The legend

The legend of Baba Baidyanath

The Shiva Purana tells how Ravana’s devotion brought a Jyotirlinga to Deoghar. This is how the story is told.

  1. Ravana's penanceRavana, king of Lanka, did fierce penance for Shiva, offering his heads one by one into the sacred fire.
  2. The Lord of PhysiciansPleased, Shiva restored him — and so is worshipped here as Vaidyanath, the healer. He gave Ravana a linga for Lanka, on one condition: wherever it first touched the ground, it would stay.
  3. A cowherd on the roadThe gods, worried about Ravana’s power, made sure he had to stop on the way. A cowherd — said to be Vishnu in disguise, remembered locally as Baiju — held the linga and set it down.
  4. It stayed at DeogharRavana could not lift it again; it is said he pressed it with his thumb in anger. The linga has stayed at Deoghar ever since.

These are stories of faith, told as tradition rather than history. Tradition also holds that Sati’s heart fell here, which is why the shrine is honoured as a Shakti Peeth (Hriday Peeth) — Shakti Peeth lists differ on the details.

Sultanganj to Deoghar

The kanwar yatra to Baba Dham

In Shravan, kanwariyas collect Ganga water at Sultanganj (Ajgaibinath) in Bihar and carry it on their shoulders in a kanwar, walking about 105–108 km to Deoghar to offer it on the Jyotirlinga. PTI counted about 53 lakh kanwariyas in 2025.

By custom, many pilgrims then go on to Basukinath in Dumka district, about 43 km away. If you are planning the walk with elders, plan rest stops and a vehicle to follow — and expect very dense crowds on Shravan Mondays.

Deoghar, Parli and Baijnath

Which is the real Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga?

Three temples are linked with the name. Deoghar (Jharkhand) is the most widely accepted, following the Shiva Purana’s “चिताभूमौ”. The popular Jyotirlinga smaranam says “परल्यां वैद्यनाथं”, so Maharashtra’s tradition honours Parli Vaijnath in Beed district. Baijnath in Kangra, Himachal — a stone temple of 1204 CE — has its own Ravana legend but is less often counted. We respect all three traditions.

Baidyanath is not Baijnath. The spellings are mixed up all over the web: this page is about Deoghar in Jharkhand.
