Where is Kainchi Dham and what are its timings?
Kainchi Dham is Neem Karoli Baba’s Hanuman temple and ashram on the Nainital–Almora road in Nainital district, Uttarakhand — 9 km from Bhowali and about 17 km from Nainital. Darshan is open from about 6 am to 7 pm (confirm locally). Entry is free and, as of early November 2026, no registration is needed; a daily cap is only proposed.
Kainchi Dham — कैंची धाम — is the ashram of Neem Karoli Baba, lovingly called Maharaj-ji, built around a temple of Hanuman beside the small Shipra stream in the Kumaon hills. The place is said to take its name from the two hairpin bends of the road here, shaped like a pair of scissors (kainchi). It is run by the Shri Kainchi Hanuman Mandir and Asram Trust.
Besides Hanuman, the ashram has shrines of Lakshmi-Narayan, Parvati, Ganesha, Kartikeya and Vindhyavasini Devi, and a Shiva linga. It is a short, level walk across the bridge from the road, so elders manage it easily — the real challenge today is traffic and queues, especially on weekends and long weekends.
The story of Kainchi Dham
This is how devotees remember the ashram’s beginning — a story of a saint, a riverbend and a temple for Hanuman.
- A pause by the ShipraIn 1962 Neem Karoli Baba stopped at this bend of the Shipra, where sadhus are said to have performed yagyas long before, and asked for a simple platform to be built.
- A temple for HanumanTwo years later, in June 1964, a Hanuman temple was consecrated here. 15 June is still kept as the ashram’s foundation day.
- Love, serve, rememberDevotees sum up his teaching in a few words: love everyone, serve everyone, remember God — and feed people.
- Seekers from afarHe spent much of his last decade at Kainchi. Western seekers such as Ram Dass, who met him in 1967, carried his name abroad, and visitors from around the world still come.
Neem Karoli Baba passed away in September 1973 in Vrindavan, where his samadhi stands; Kainchi keeps an urn of his ashes. Devotees share many stories of his grace — we tell them as faith, not as claims.

Is registration required for Kainchi Dham?
Not today. There is no registration and no entry fee as of early November 2026. In October 2026 the district administration proposed an online registration system, like the Char Dham one, with a daily limit of about 20,000–25,000 visitors; the Kumaon Commissioner agreed in principle, and the Nainital DM and SSP are to prepare a plan for state government approval. It would take about a month to build after approval, with weekend trials first.
The reason is the crowd: about 24.34 lakh visitors came between January and June 2026, against roughly 8 lakh in all of 2025, and 35,000–50,000 a day on the 2 October long weekend. Already in force: no bathing in the Shipra, rate lists at shops and hotels, the Almora highway kept clear, and separate routes and shuttles on rush days. Check the latest notice from Nainital district before a weekend or holiday visit, and follow our Kainchi Dham registration news for updates.
Who was Neem Karoli Baba?
Neem Karoli Baba was a saint of the bhakti tradition and a lifelong devotee of Hanuman. He was born Lakshman Narayan Sharma around 1900 in Uttar Pradesh and took his name from Neem Karoli village in Farrukhabad district, where he spent his early years as a sadhu. He founded the Kainchi ashram in the 1960s and passed away in September 1973 in Vrindavan, where his samadhi is.
His teaching was simple — love, serve and remember God — and it travelled far through his devotees in India and abroad. Many people come to Kainchi today because they first read about him; at the ashram, the quiet way to honour him is darshan of Hanuman, a moment of silence and prasad.
