Where is Rameshwaram temple and why is it sacred?
The Ramanathaswamy temple stands on Pamban island in Rameswaram, Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu, beside the sea. It is the southernmost of the 12 Jyotirlingas and one of the four Char Dham. Tradition says Rama worshipped Shiva here before and after the war with Ravana. Darshan is open 5 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 9 pm.
Rameshwaram — also spelt Rameswaram — means “the Lord of Rama”. The temple sits a short walk from Agni Theertham, the sea-front where pilgrims take their first dip, and its pillared corridors run for hundreds of metres. It is revered by Shaivites, Vaishnavites and Smartas alike: a Jyotirlinga, one of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams sung by the Nayanar saints Appar, Sundarar and Sambandar, and the southern dham of Adi Shankara’s four Char Dham (Badrinath, Puri, Dwarka and Rameswaram).
Rameshwaram is 11th in the Shiva Purana’s order of the Jyotirlingas and 7th in the popular stotram, which names it “सेतुबन्धे तु रामेशं” — the Lord of Rama at the bridge. Don’t confuse this Char Dham with the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath), which is a different, Himalayan circuit.
The legend of Rameshwaram
The Shiva Purana and the temple’s own tradition tell of Rama’s prayer on this southern shore, and of two lingas. This is how the story is told.
- Rama prays by the seaBefore crossing to Lanka, Rama camped on this southern shore and prayed to Shiva for victory. According to the Shiva Purana, Shiva appeared, blessed him and agreed to stay here as Rameshwara — the Lord whom Rama worships.
- Hanuman goes to KailashA much-told temple tradition adds a second episode after the war. Rama wished to atone for slaying Ravana, a learned Brahmin, and sent Hanuman to Kailash to bring a linga.
- Sita's linga of sandHanuman was delayed. So that the auspicious hour would not pass, Sita shaped a linga from sand and Rama consecrated it — the Ramalingam.
- Hanuman's linga firstWhen Hanuman arrived with the Vishwalingam, Rama asked that it be worshipped first, out of respect for his devotion. The temple keeps that custom to this day.
It is also believed that Rama’s bridge to Lanka began near here. Geologists describe Ram Setu (Adam’s Bridge) as a chain of shoals; for pilgrims it remains the bridge of the Ramayana. These are stories of faith, told as tradition rather than history.

The 22 theerthams of Rameshwaram temple
There are 22 theerthams — sacred wells — inside the temple, and tradition links them to the arrows of Rama’s quiver. Around the island there are many more (64 are counted, 24 of them considered important in the Skanda Purana). Most pilgrims follow this order:
- Sea dip at Agni TheerthamThe traditional first step is a dip in the sea at Agni Theertham, about 200 m from the temple. Many families also perform ancestral rites (thila homam and tarpanam) here, especially on Amavasya.
- Bath at the 22 wellsEnter the temple and bathe at the 22 wells in sequence; temple staff draw the water by bucket and pour it over you. The baths are ticketed at the temple counter — confirm the fee there.
- Change into dry clothesWet clothes are not allowed in the sanctum, so carry a dry change and use the changing areas.
- DarshanThen go for darshan of Ramanathaswamy, with the Vishwalingam worshipped first, and of Goddess Parvathavardhini.
The baths are a tradition, not a rule. Elders who find the wet, slippery floors difficult can go straight for darshan.
A short history of Ramanathaswamy temple
The sanctum dates to the 12th century, when the Sri Lankan king Parakramabahu I (1153–1186) was involved in building it and the Pandyas expanded the temple. The region suffered Malik Kafur’s raids in 1311. Between 1380 and 1410 Jeyaveera Cinkaiariyan of the Jaffna kingdom renovated the sanctum, and the Virabhadra pillars belong to the Vijayanagara era of the early 1500s.
The great third corridor, the Chokkattan Mandapam, was built by Muthuramalinga Sethupathi between 1763 and 1795. India’s official tourism site calls it Asia’s longest temple corridor — 197 m east–west and 133 m north–south; the outer corridors together run about 3,850 ft with roughly 1,212 pillars, under a rajagopuram 53 m tall. On 6 April 2025, Ram Navami, the new Pamban rail bridge — India’s first vertical-lift sea bridge — was opened, and trains now reach the island over it.

Questions pilgrims ask
What are the Rameswaram temple timings?
The temple is open from 5 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 9 pm, according to Incredible India. The early-morning Spatika (crystal) Linga darshan is held around opening time — confirm the exact time at the temple office.
What are the 22 theerthams of Rameshwaram?
Twenty-two sacred wells inside the temple, linked by tradition to the arrows of Rama’s quiver. Pilgrims bathe in them in order after a sea dip at Agni Theertham, change into dry clothes and then go for darshan.
Is the Agni Theertham dip compulsory?
No. It is the traditional first step, not a rule. Many elders go straight for darshan without the sea dip or the 22 well baths.
Which linga is worshipped first at Rameswaram?
The Vishwalingam that Hanuman brought from Kailash. Tradition says Rama asked that it be worshipped before the sand Ramalingam made by Sita, out of respect for Hanuman’s devotion.
Can I take my mobile phone inside Rameshwaram temple?
No. Mobile phones are restricted inside Tamil Nadu temples following a Madras High Court direction; deposit counters are available near the entrance.
Is there online booking for Rameshwaram temple darshan?
We found no official online darshan booking. Theertham and special-darshan tickets are sold at the temple counters; “VIP darshan” websites are agencies, not the temple.
How do I reach Rameswaram?
Fly to Madurai, about 175 km away, and drive across the Pamban bridge, or take a train to Rameswaram station, about 2 km from the temple.
Is Rameswaram one of the Char Dham?
Yes. It is the southern dham of the four Char Dham of Adi Shankara’s tradition — Badrinath, Puri, Dwarka and Rameswaram — not part of the Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra.
