As of 8 October 2026, you do not need to register to visit Kainchi Dham, but that is about to change. At a meeting on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, chaired by Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat, the Nainital administration decided to recommend mandatory advance registration for devotees visiting Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram. The model is the Char Dham registration system. Officials are also looking at a daily cap of about 20,000–25,000 visitors. Nainital District Magistrate Lalit Mohan Rayal told The Indian Express that registration would start on weekends only, and that building the portal would take “about a month”. Until the state government approves it, the cap and the registration rule are proposals, not law.
If you are planning a Kainchi Dham trip in October or November, here is what was decided, what is still pending and how to plan around it.
What happened: the Gandhi Jayanti weekend that broke Kainchi
The long weekend that started on Friday, 2 October 2026 brought far more visitors than Kainchi Dham’s roads, parking and waste systems can handle. Reported figures differ by source:
- DM Lalit Mohan Rayal told The Indian Express that the administration normally expects around 25,000 visitors a day, and that footfall crossed 35,000 a day over the long weekend.
- The Pioneer’s account of the Commissioner’s meeting puts last weekend at 40,000, against a usual weekend figure of about 25,000.
- India Today and Business Today reported that devotees crossed 50,000 last weekend.
Whichever figure you use, the result was the same. Traffic crawled for kilometres through Bhimtal, Bhowali and Kainchi, and trips took hours longer than normal. ThePrint’s ground report from 7 October describes supplies of milk and cooking gas being disrupted and garbage collection breaking down around the shrine.
The surge has been building for a while. The Indian Express reports that 24.34 lakh people visited Kainchi Dham in the first six months of 2026, compared with about eight lakh in the whole of the previous year. Officials link the latest spike to two things. The monsoon has ended, so travellers who avoided the hills because of landslides are back. And Hanuman Ansh, the film on Neem Karoli Baba’s life, has run past ₹400 crore at the box office.
The new Kainchi Dham rules: decided vs proposed
Some reports blur the difference between what has been decided locally and what still needs government approval. Here is how it stands as of 8 October 2026:
| Measure | Status (8 Oct 2026) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Mandatory advance registration | Proposed. DM and SSP to send a joint report to the state government | Not required yet. Watch for the portal launch |
| Weekend-only registration at first | Planned (DM to The Indian Express) | Weekday visits will probably stay registration-free for longer |
| Daily cap of 20,000–25,000 | Tentative. Officials say the figure “is not final” | On peak days, walk-in darshan may eventually be limited |
| Separate entry and exit inside the temple | Agreed. Commissioner asked for arrangements within a fortnight | One-way movement inside the complex |
| Crowd-management review before every weekend (SDM, CO, ARTO) | Decided | Weekend diversions and parking plans can change week to week |
| Shuttle services from Bhowali when crowds are high | Planned, with KMOU and the Transport Department | On busy days you may need to park and take a shuttle |
| Action on bikes used as taxis and on overcharging | Ordered | Use registered taxis. Shops, hotels and homestays must display rate lists |
| Shipra river monitoring by the Forest Department | Ordered | Do not bathe or picnic in the river. Violators face action |
How the Char Dham-style registration is likely to work
The DM said the plan is to “replicate” the Char Dham model. That system runs on Uttarakhand Tourism’s Registration and Tourist Care portal and its app. Pilgrims create an account, enter travel dates, group size and each traveller’s details, and receive a registration letter with a QR code that is checked on arrival. Families, individuals and tour operators can all register, and offline counters help people who cannot register online.
Officials have not yet announced whether Kainchi Dham will get its own portal or a module inside the existing one, whether there will be a fee, or how time slots would work. Treat any website that already claims to sell “Kainchi Dham registration” with suspicion until the Uttarakhand government announces the official link.
The road fix: Ratighat bypass
The worst of the jam happens because pilgrims and through-traffic share one road. The Bhowali–Kainchi stretch is part of the route to Almora, Ranikhet, Kausani, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh and Mukteshwar. The DM told The Indian Express that the Forest Department has now given ground-level permission for the 18-km Ratighat bypass. About 8 km is already hot-mixed. The state is considering a ₹21-crore estimate for the remaining stretch, and the DM expects the road to work four to six months after that approval. So it will not help this autumn, but it may by the 2027 summer season.
What this means for your trip
Suzu Travels runs road trips through Kumaon. Here is our practical advice for the next few weeks:
- Go on a weekday if you possibly can. The administration will act on weekends first, and weekends are when the 35,000–50,000 crowds happened. A Tuesday–Thursday darshan is a different experience.
- Book your stay before you leave home. The administration specifically asked visitors not to arrive and then hunt for rooms, because that adds to the jam. Officials say hotel bookings may be checked. Kainchi Dham is 9 km from Bhowali and 17 km from Nainital (Kumaon Division), so Bhowali, Bhimtal and Nainital all work as bases.
- Start early. The Nainital–Almora road is the only way in. Leave your base early in the morning instead of joining the mid-morning convoy.
- Plan for a shuttle on busy days. If shuttles from Bhowali run on a given weekend, private cars may not get close to the gate. Budget extra time and keep elderly travellers’ needs in mind.
- Watch the festival dates. Navratri begins on Sunday, 11 October 2026, Vijayadashami falls on Tuesday, 20 October, and Diwali is on Sunday, 8 November. Each could bring a weekend surge, and the registration system may be in place by early November if the DM’s one-month estimate holds.
- Getting there: the nearest railhead is Kathgodam (43 km) and the nearest airport is Pantnagar (79 km), according to the Kumaon Division’s official page. From Delhi, most travellers drive or take a train to Kathgodam and continue by taxi.
- Check the weather. Western disturbances have brought rain and thunderstorms to the hills this week. Check the Meteorological Centre Dehradun before you drive.
You can also make Kainchi one stop on a longer trip, which spreads the travel time and avoids a rushed same-day return to the plains. Our 4-day Majestic Nainital tour keeps Bhowali and Kainchi within easy reach, and the wider Uttarakhand tour packages can be planned around a weekday darshan. If you have travelled on the Char Dham Yatra, the registration process will feel familiar.
For travel agents and group organisers
If you send groups to Kumaon, assume weekend darshan will need registration within weeks and quote weekday darshan as the default. For a 20-person group from Delhi, this matters more than the hotel category. Our Uttarakhand DMC desk handles ground logistics, permits and timing for B2B partners. Call or WhatsApp 7087488961.
Frequently asked questions
Is registration mandatory for Kainchi Dham right now?
No. As of 8 October 2026, you can still arrive and enter for darshan without registering. The Nainital administration has recommended mandatory registration to the state government, and the DM estimates about a month to build the portal.
Will there be a daily limit on visitors?
Officials discussed 20,000–25,000 devotees a day as a manageable cap, but they have said clearly that the figure is tentative and may be revised.
Will the registration apply every day?
Not at first. The DM said it will start on weekends, and the administration will decide later, based on expected footfall, whether to extend it in the regular season.
Where will I register?
That has not been announced yet. The plan copies the Char Dham system, which runs on Uttarakhand’s official Registration and Tourist Care portal and app. Use only the official link once the government publishes it.
What is the best time to visit Kainchi Dham to avoid crowds?
Go on a weekday morning, outside long weekends and festival weekends. Officials say about 25,000 visitors now come on a normal day, so even weekdays are busy, but they are far more manageable than the 35,000–50,000 reported over the Gandhi Jayanti weekend.
Why is Kainchi Dham so crowded in 2026?
Interest in Neem Karoli Baba has been growing for years through social media and celebrity visits. Footfall rose from about eight lakh in 2025 to 24.34 lakh in just the first half of 2026. The post-monsoon return of tourists and the success of the film Hanuman Ansh added to the surge this October.
