Short answer: The best Dharamshala itinerary is 3 days: Day 1 McLeod Ganj and the Dalai Lama temple (Tsuglagkhang); Day 2 Bhagsunag, Dharamkot and Naddi at sunset, or the Triund trek if you are fit; Day 3 lower Dharamshala with Norbulingka, Chamunda Devi, the HPCA stadium and the War Memorial. With 4 days, add Kangra Fort and the Masroor rock-cut temples, or Palampur, Baijnath and Bir Billing. With 5–6 days, add Dalhousie and Khajjiar. Reach by flight to Gaggal (Kangra) airport, an overnight bus from Delhi, or a train to Pathankot and a 2.5–3 hour drive.

  • 3 days (best): McLeod Ganj · Bhagsu–Dharamkot–Naddi or Triund · lower Dharamshala and Chamunda Devi.
  • 4 days: add Kangra Fort + Masroor, or Palampur + Baijnath + Bir.
  • 5–6 days: add Dalhousie and Khajjiar (4–5 hours away).
  • Getting there: Delhi–Gaggal flight about 1 h 20–1 h 40 min; overnight HRTC bus 11–14 hours; Pathankot by train plus about 90 km by road.

Where should you stay: McLeod Ganj or lower Dharamshala?

“Dharamshala” is two towns about 10 km apart by road. McLeod Ganj (about 2,000 m) is the Tibetan quarter with the Dalai Lama temple, cafes and the walks to Bhagsu, Dharamkot and Triund; stay here for a first visit. Lower Dharamshala (about 1,450 m) has the cricket stadium, Kotwali Bazaar and easier roads, and is closer to Gaggal airport and the valley temples; it suits parents and anyone who wants flat access. The Dharamshala Skyway ropeway (about 1.8 km, roughly 5 minutes) links the two when it is running.

2-day Dharamshala itinerary

Day Plan Notes
Day 1 Arrive by morning flight or overnight bus. Tsuglagkhang and Namgyal Monastery, then the Lingkhor kora walk; afternoon Bhagsunag temple and the walk up to Bhagsu waterfall; sunset at Naddi via Dal Lake. Temple entry is free, with a bag check. Bhagsu gets crowded on weekends; go early or late.
Day 2 Morning: St John in the Wilderness (1852) and the Tibet Museum on the road down. Midday: Norbulingka Institute and Gyuto Monastery at Sidhbari. Afternoon: HPCA stadium and War Memorial, then leave. The Tibet Museum is closed on Saturdays. Keep 45 minutes for the airport from lower Dharamshala.

3-day Dharamshala itinerary (recommended)

Day Morning Afternoon / evening
Day 1: McLeod Ganj Arrive and check in. Tsuglagkhang and the Lingkhor kora (about 1.5 hours together). McLeod Ganj market and Tibetan food; St John in the Wilderness at dusk.
Day 2: Bhagsu, Dharamkot, Naddi (or Triund) Bhagsunag temple and waterfall; climb on to Dharamkot for lunch. Naddi viewpoint and Dal Lake for sunset. Fit walkers can instead do Triund: about 9 km one way from McLeod Ganj via Gallu, 4–5 hours up.
Day 3: Lower Dharamshala and Chamunda Norbulingka and Gyuto at Sidhbari; Chamunda Devi temple, about 15 km on the Palampur road. HPCA stadium and War Memorial; Kangra Art Museum in Kotwali Bazaar (closed Mondays); depart.

For Triund, the Forest Department charges ₹100 per person per day at Gallu and caps daily numbers; see our Triund trek page. If public teachings by the Dalai Lama are on your dates, check the official schedule on dalailama.com and plan Day 1 around it; our McLeod Ganj guide explains how.

4-day Dharamshala itinerary

Details of the Dalhousie end are in our Dalhousie tourist places and Dalhousie and Khajjiar trip guide. As a package, our Dharamshala Dalhousie tour from Delhi (4N/5D) starts from ₹16,499 per person and the 5N/6D version from Chandigarh from ₹19,499 (twin sharing, off-season, on the live pages).

How do you reach Dharamshala for this itinerary?

From Option Time and cost (approx.)
Delhi Flight to Gaggal (DHM) About 1 h 20–1 h 40 min; IndiGo and SpiceJet, roughly one or two flights each a day. Gaggal is about 13–14 km from lower Dharamshala and about 20 km from McLeod Ganj.
Delhi Overnight HRTC bus 11–14 hours; HRTC fares from about ₹672 (ordinary) to about ₹1,295 (AC Volvo-class), per an October 2026 booking-site listing.
Delhi Train to Pathankot + taxi About 90 km and 2.5–3 hours by road from Pathankot; our Pathankot to Dharamshala taxi starts at ₹2,499 (sedan).
Delhi Taxi all the way About 475–480 km, 9–12 hours; Delhi to Dharamshala taxi from ₹7,199 (sedan) one way.
Chandigarh Taxi About 240–250 km, 5.5–7 hours; Chandigarh to Dharamshala taxi from ₹3,999 (sedan).

Fog in Delhi (December–January) and cloud over Kangra can cancel flights, so do not plan a tight onward connection on the day you fly out.

When is the best time to follow this itinerary?

March to mid-June and mid-September to November are the easiest months: clear Dhauladhar views and open trails. July and August are among the wettest months in India here, with landslides and no paragliding. December to February is cold but usually clear in McLeod Ganj; Triund can have snow, so go only with a guide. Our Dharamshala in December guide covers the winter version of this plan.

What this means for your trip

  • Three days is the right length for Dharamshala alone; four if you want the Kangra valley; six with Dalhousie.
  • Stay in McLeod Ganj for the culture and walks; lower Dharamshala for easy roads and the airport.
  • Keep Triund for your fittest day and start early.
  • For more on what each place is like, read Dharamshala tourist places; for other regions, our places to visit in Himachal list.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are enough for Dharamshala?

Three days covers McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu, Dharamkot, Naddi (or Triund), Norbulingka, Chamunda Devi and the stadium. Add a fourth day for Kangra Fort and Masroor or Palampur and Bir, and two more for Dalhousie and Khajjiar.

What is a good 2-day Dharamshala itinerary?

Day 1: Tsuglagkhang and the Lingkhor kora, Bhagsunag and the waterfall, sunset at Naddi. Day 2: St John in the Wilderness and the Tibet Museum, Norbulingka and Gyuto at Sidhbari, then the HPCA stadium and War Memorial before you leave.

Can I do Triund in a Dharamshala itinerary?

Yes, as a full day if you are fit: about 9 km one way from McLeod Ganj via Gallu, 4-5 hours up and about 3 hours down. The Forest Department charges Rs 100 per person per day at Gallu and caps daily numbers.

Should I stay in McLeod Ganj or Dharamshala?

Stay in McLeod Ganj for a first visit: the Dalai Lama temple, cafes and walks are on your doorstep. Lower Dharamshala suits older travellers and anyone who wants easier roads and quicker access to the airport and valley temples.

How do I reach Dharamshala from Delhi?

By flight to Gaggal (Kangra) airport in about 1 h 20-1 h 40 min, by overnight HRTC bus in 11-14 hours, by train to Pathankot plus a 2.5-3 hour drive, or by taxi in 9-12 hours (from Rs 7,199 one way in a sedan on our 2026 rates).

Can I combine Dharamshala and Dalhousie in 5 days?

Yes. Spend three days in Dharamshala, drive to Dalhousie on day 4 (4-5 hours), visit Kalatop and Khajjiar on day 5, and drive down to Pathankot for the night train.

What is the best month for a Dharamshala trip?

March to mid-June and mid-September to November. July and August are very wet, and December to February is cold, with snow possible on Triund.
