December is Jaisalmer’s most comfortable month: sunny days around 24–26°C, nights near 8–11°C in town and colder on the dunes. Since 13 October 2026 the Sam and Kanoi dunes are closed to tourists after sunset, so camel and jeep rides end at dusk and camps run programmes inside the camp. Book Christmas camps early.

Short answer: December is Jaisalmer’s most comfortable month: sunny days around 24–26°C, nights near 8–11°C in town and colder on the dunes. Sightseeing in the fort and havelis is comfortable all day. The new rule matters: since 13 October 2026 the Sam and Kanoi dunes are closed to tourists after sunset, so camel and jeep rides end at dusk and camps run their programmes inside the camp. Christmas to New Year is the peak; book camps by mid-November.

Quick answer (checked 23 October 2026)

  • Weather: December mean maximum 25.8°C, mean minimum 11.0°C, record low −0.6°C (IMD 1991–2020 normals for Jaisalmer); dune camps feel 3–5°C colder at night.
  • New rule: Rajasthan Forest Department order effective 13 October 2026: no tourist entry, camel safaris or sightseeing on the designated Sam and Kanoi dunes after sunset; laser lights banned at camp shows. Khuri is not named in the order.
  • Sunset: About 5:55–6:05 pm in December at Sam; rides start 4:15–4:45 pm.
  • Festival: Jaisalmer Desert Festival 2027 is expected around Magha Purnima, Saturday 20 February 2027 (Drik Panchang); official dates not yet announced.
  • Train: 14659 Runicha Express leaves Delhi 17:35, Jaipur 23:45, reaches Jaisalmer 11:55 next day, daily (etrain.info timetable).
  • Peak: 20 December to 5 January, with gala-dinner surcharges on 24, 25 and 31 December.

What is the weather in Jaisalmer in December?

Jaisalmer sits at about 225 m in the Thar, and December is its reward for the summer. IMD normals for 1991–2020 give a mean daily maximum of 25.8°C and a mean minimum of 11.0°C, with a record low of −0.6°C; January is slightly cooler at 23.4°C and 9.3°C (climate table, checked 23 October 2026). Rain is almost nil and the sky is clear most days, which is why sunsets and stars here are so good in winter.

The number that surprises people is the night-time one, and it is worse on the dunes than in town. Sand loses heat fast after dark; a camp at Sam or Khuri in the last week of December often sits in single digits by midnight, with a wind that makes it feel colder. Camps give quilts and most now have heaters or bonfires, but you still want a proper jacket for the cultural programme and for the walk to the tent. In town, the fort walls hold the day’s warmth and evenings on rooftop restaurants are pleasant with a shawl.

What is the new rule about the Sam sand dunes after sunset?

On 13 October 2026 the Regional Forest Officer (Tourism and Wildlife), Jaisalmer, wrote to the hotel association closing the designated dune areas of Sam and Kanoi to tourists after sunset. Tourist entry, camel safaris, sightseeing and other tourist activity on those dunes must stop at sunset; laser lights at night-time cultural programmes in Sam and Kanoi are banned; and dumping waste in the protected area is treated as a breach of National Green Tribunal directions. No end date was given, so treat the rules as in force for the whole 2026–27 season. We explain the order and what it changes in our post on the Sam sand dunes closing after sunset.

What it means for a December visitor:

  • Camel and jeep rides on the Sam and Kanoi dunes are afternoon and sunset activities only; they must end by sunset, around 5:55–6:05 pm in December. Start by 4:30 pm.
  • Night camel rides, moonlight dune walks and midnight jeep runs onto the dunes are over for this season. Stargazing happens inside the camp grounds.
  • Overnight camp stays, dinner, folk music and dance continue as before, with ordinary lighting instead of lasers.
  • Khuri is not named in the order. Ask your camp before planning any night activity there, because enforcement can widen.
  • New Year’s Eve at a Sam camp will be inside the camp, not on the dunes. Ask the camp exactly how the night will run before you pay.

Sam or Khuri: which desert camp area is better in December?

Factor Sam Khuri
Distance About 40–45 km west, roughly an hour. About 40–45 km south-west, a different road.
Dunes Big, classic, busy; the sunset crowd is large in peak week. Smaller dunes beside a village; quieter, more rustic.
Camps Hundreds, from Swiss tents to luxury estates; big stage shows. Fewer, smaller camps and homestays; simpler food and music.
After-sunset rule Applies: dunes closed after sunset, no lasers. Not named in the order; confirm with the camp.
Best for First visit, families, groups who want the full show. Couples, repeat visitors, anyone avoiding crowds.

A typical camp day in December: leave Jaisalmer around 2 pm, check in by 3:30, camel or jeep ride at about 4:30, sunset on the dunes, back in camp by 6:15, tea, the programme and dinner, bed by 10 under heavy quilts, breakfast and checkout by 10 am. Market guidance from our Jaisalmer desert camp guide puts a budget Swiss tent for two with dinner and breakfast at roughly ₹1,500–3,000 a night, deluxe tents at ₹4,000–9,000 and air-conditioned cottages or luxury tents from about ₹12,000, with gala surcharges on 24, 25 and 31 December. Those are market ranges, not our prices; we quote on your dates.

What should I see in Jaisalmer town?

  • Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Quila): a living fort with a few thousand residents inside the walls; entry to the fort itself is free, the Fort Palace Museum is ticketed. Go at 8 am before the lanes fill, and again at sunset from the ramparts. Water use inside the fort is a conservation issue; stay outside the walls if you can.
  • Patwon ki Haveli: a cluster of five 19th-century merchant mansions with the finest carved facades in town; nominal entry (listed at ₹30 for Indians in 2025 guides, confirm at the gate). Salim Singh ki Haveli and Nathmal ki Haveli are a short walk away.
  • Gadisar Lake: the 14th-century reservoir with ghats, chhatris and winter birds; free entry, paddle boats for hire, best at sunrise.
  • Bada Bagh: royal cenotaphs 6 km north, with windmills behind them; sunset light.
  • Kuldhara: the abandoned Paliwal village 18 km out, on the way to Khuri; an hour is enough.
  • Jaisalmer War Museum and Longewala: the Army’s museum is on the Jodhpur road; Longewala, the 1971 battlefield, is 120 km towards Tanot and a full day with Tanot Mata temple.

A 3-day Jaisalmer plan for December

Day Plan Night
1 Arrive by the morning train. Fort lanes and Jain temples before lunch, Patwon ki Haveli at 3 pm, Gadisar at sunset. Jaisalmer, rooftop dinner facing the fort.
2 Bada Bagh in the morning, Kuldhara on the way out, camp check-in by 3:30, camel or jeep ride at 4:30, sunset on the dunes by 6, programme and dinner in camp. Sam or Khuri camp.
3 Sunrise walk near camp, back to town by 11, War Museum or shopping, afternoon train or flight. Or add Longewala and Tanot as a fourth day. Onward.

Christmas, New Year and the Desert Festival: booking lead times

Jaisalmer’s season peaks between 20 December and 5 January. Camps sell their 24, 25 and 31 December nights first and add gala surcharges; the Runicha Express waitlists weeks ahead; fort-view rooms go by late November. Book camps and trains by mid-November for Christmas week, and earlier for New Year’s Eve. The 1–20 December window is a sweet spot: identical weather, half the crowd, lower rates.

The Jaisalmer Desert Festival follows the lunar calendar and usually ends on Magha Purnima at the Sam dunes. Magha Purnima 2027 falls on Saturday 20 February 2027 (Drik Panchang), so a 18–20 February festival is the expected pattern, but Rajasthan Tourism had not published official 2027 dates when we checked on 23 October 2026; confirm before you book around it. Jaisalmer also appears in our round-up of the best places to visit in December in India. Our Rajasthan packages are custom and priced on your dates, so ask for a written quote rather than relying on a rate card.

What to pack for Jaisalmer in December

  1. A warm jacket or heavy shawl for the camp night and the pre-dawn; a fleece for town evenings.
  2. Light cotton layers, a hat and sunscreen for the day; the desert sun is strong even at 25°C.
  3. Closed shoes for the dunes and the fort’s cobbles; sand gets everywhere.
  4. Sunglasses and a scarf for wind on the camel ride.
  5. Lip balm and moisturiser; December air here is very dry.
  6. Cash for camel men, guides and village stalls; UPI works in town.

Frequently asked questions

Is December a good time to visit Jaisalmer?

Yes, it is the most comfortable month. IMD normals give a December maximum of 25.8°C and minimum of 11.0°C, with clear skies and almost no rain. Days suit the fort and havelis, evenings suit the dunes. The trade-off is the Christmas to New Year crowd and peak pricing; the first three weeks of December give the same weather with fewer people.

Can I visit the Sam sand dunes at night in December 2026?

No. Since 13 October 2026 the Rajasthan Forest Department has closed the designated Sam and Kanoi dunes to tourists after sunset, ending night camel rides and moonlight jeep runs, and banned laser lights at camp shows. Camps, dinners and folk programmes continue inside the camp grounds. Khuri is not named in the order, but confirm with your camp before planning any night activity.

How cold is a desert camp at night in December?

Colder than the town figures suggest. Jaisalmer’s December minimum averages about 11°C, but sand loses heat quickly and camps at Sam or Khuri often drop into single digits by midnight in late December, with a cold wind. Camps provide quilts and usually heaters or bonfires; bring a proper jacket, socks and a cap for the programme and the walk to your tent.

What time should I start a camel safari at Sam in December?

About 4:15–4:45 pm. Sunset at Sam falls around 5:55–6:05 pm in December, and under the new rule all tourist activity on the dunes must end by sunset, so a ride of 60–90 minutes needs to begin by 4:30. Camps usually schedule check-in for 3–3:30 pm. Jeep dune-bashing should also be booked for the afternoon.

How do I reach Jaisalmer from Delhi by train?

The 14659 Runicha Express leaves Old Delhi at 17:35, stops at Jaipur at 23:35, and reaches Jaisalmer at 11:55 the next morning, daily, per the etrain.info timetable checked on 23 October 2026. Book early for Christmas week. Seasonal flights also operate into Jaisalmer from October to March, and Jodhpur’s year-round airport is about 285 km away.

When is the Jaisalmer Desert Festival 2027?

Official dates were not announced as of 23 October 2026. The festival usually ends on Magha Purnima at the Sam dunes, and Magha Purnima 2027 falls on Saturday 20 February 2027 per Drik Panchang, so 18–20 February 2027 is the expected window. Confirm with Rajasthan Tourism before booking hotels, which fill fast around the festival.
