Short answer: The quickest way from Delhi to Dharamshala is a 1 h 30 min flight to Gaggal airport (DHM), then a 30–45 minute taxi to McLeod Ganj. The lowest-cost option is an overnight HRTC Volvo bus from ISBT Kashmere Gate, about 11–12 hours for under US$20. A private car takes 9–11 hours for 480 km and suits families or anyone continuing into the hills. Overnight trains run to Pathankot, 90 km away, not to Dharamshala itself.
Quick answer (checked 23 October 2026)
- Fly: IndiGo and SpiceJet, 1–2 flights each per day, about 1 h 20–1 h 40 min. Gaggal is 13 km from Dharamshala and 20 km from McLeod Ganj. Weather cancellations are common in winter and monsoon.
- Bus: HRTC Himsuta Volvo from ISBT Kashmere Gate at 08:30 and 20:50, 11–12 hours, Rs 1,501–1,558 (about US$16); ordinary buses from Rs 737.
- Train: No railway to Dharamshala. Jammu Rajdhani (12425) leaves New Delhi 20:40 and reaches Pathankot Cantt 03:10; then 2.5–3 hours by taxi.
- Car: About 480 km via Chandigarh and Una, 9–11 hours with stops; or 520 km via NH44 and Pathankot.
- Stay: Two nights minimum in McLeod Ganj; three if you want the Triund day hike.
- Exchange rate used: Rs 94.70 per US$ (USD/INR close 22 October 2026).

Where exactly are you going: Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj or Dharamkot?
Dharamshala is the district town of Kangra at about 1,450 m, with the bus stand, the cricket stadium and the main bazaar. McLeod Ganj, 9 km uphill at around 2,000 m, is the Tibetan town with the Dalai Lama’s temple, and it is where almost every international visitor stays. Dharamkot and Bhagsu are villages 2 km further up, popular for long stays, yoga and the start of the Triund trail. Buses and trains are sold to “Dharamshala”; most HRTC Volvo services continue to McLeod Ganj, but check the final stop when you book. A taxi from the Dharamshala bus stand to McLeod Ganj takes 20–30 minutes.
Flying from Delhi to Dharamshala: Gaggal airport (DHM)
Kangra airport at Gaggal, code DHM, has a short runway in a valley and handles only turboprop and small jet traffic. IndiGo and SpiceJet fly non-stop from Delhi, roughly one to two flights each per day, with a block time of about 1 h 20 min to 1 h 40 min (flightsfrom.com listings for the week of 2–8 November 2026, checked 23 October 2026). Flight aggregators show around 20 to 25 direct departures a week; schedules thin out in monsoon and change seasonally, so check the airline sites close to your dates. Fares swing from about US$40 to well over US$150 depending on how far ahead you book.
The catch is reliability. Gaggal has no instrument approach for poor visibility, so cloud over the Dhauladhar, monsoon rain from July to mid-September and December–January fog at Delhi all cause delays and cancellations. If you have an international connection out of Delhi, do not fly back from Gaggal on the same day; allow a night in Delhi or take the road.
From the airport, prepaid and hotel taxis take 30 minutes to Dharamshala and 40–50 minutes to McLeod Ganj. Agree the fare before you get in or ask your hotel to send a car. There is no useful bus link from the terminal.
Overnight bus: HRTC Volvo from ISBT Kashmere Gate
Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), the state bus company, runs the most dependable services. On its listing for 24 October 2026 (via AbhiBus, checked 23 October 2026) there were five Delhi–Dharamshala departures: Himsuta Volvo AC 2+2 at 08:30 (11 h 30 min, Rs 1,501) and 20:50 (11 h 20 min, Rs 1,558, arriving 08:10), a Himdhara AC 3+2 at 20:45 (Rs 904), and ordinary non-AC buses at 17:31 and 23:05 (Rs 737–787). In US dollars the Volvo is about US$16. The main boarding point is ISBT Kashmere Gate in north Delhi; several services also pick up at Majnu ka Tilla, the Tibetan colony 4 km north, which is a pleasant place to spend the afternoon before an evening bus.
Private operators run Volvo and sleeper coaches on the same route from Majnu ka Tilla and RK Ashram, often at similar prices. Quality varies more than with HRTC. Whichever you choose, book on the HRTC site or a major app a few days ahead for weekends, long holidays and the October–November and April–June peaks. The road climbs through Una or Kangra after midnight, with hairpins in the last two hours; take motion-sickness tablets if you are prone, carry a fleece because the AC runs cold, and expect one or two dhaba stops.
Train from Delhi: how far does the railway get you?
There is no broad-gauge line to Dharamshala. The nearest main-line station is Pathankot Cantt (PTKC) in Punjab, about 90 km and 2.5–3 hours away by road. The Jammu- and Katra-bound night trains stop there:
- 12425 Jammu Rajdhani: New Delhi 20:40, Pathankot Cantt 03:10, daily. Fully air-conditioned with bedding; the most comfortable option.
- 12445 Uttar Sampark Kranti: New Delhi 20:50, Pathankot Cantt 03:50, daily. AC and sleeper classes.
- 14035 Dhauladhar Express: Delhi Sarai Rohilla 23:20, Pathankot Junction 08:20. Slower, but arrives at a civilised hour; running days vary, so confirm on IRCTC.
Timings are from the IRCTC timetable via ConfirmTkt and RailMitra, checked 23 October 2026; verify before booking as schedules change twice a year. The problem with the fast trains is the 3 am arrival. Pathankot station has a waiting room, and your driver can meet you at the exit for the dawn drive up the Kangra valley, which is beautiful, but you will arrive tired. Book a Pathankot to Dharamshala taxi in advance so that you are not negotiating at 3 am.
The Kangra Valley Railway, a narrow-gauge line from Pathankot to Kangra and Jogindernagar, is scenic but takes 5–6 hours to cover what a car does in two and has suffered long closures after monsoon damage. Treat it as an excursion, not transport.
Foreign tourists can book Indian trains on the IRCTC website or app with an international card after a one-time registration; the Foreign Tourist Quota opens 365 days ahead. If you also plan Amritsar, read our Delhi to Amritsar for foreigners guide; Amritsar to Dharamshala is a further 200 km and 5–6 hours by car.
Private car from Delhi: routes, time and what it costs you in hours
By road Delhi to Dharamshala is about 480 km. There are two sensible routes. The shorter goes north on NH44 to Ambala, then through Chandigarh’s outskirts, Rupnagar, Nangal, Una and Kangra; the last 150 km are two-lane hill road. The longer, about 520 km, stays on the fast NH44 past Ludhiana and Jalandhar to Pathankot and then climbs 90 km to Dharamshala; it has more dual carriageway and is often quicker in bad weather. Either way allow 9–11 hours including a breakfast stop and a lunch stop, and leave Delhi by 6 am to arrive in daylight.
A private car is slower than flying but it wins on everything else: door-to-door, no 3 am arrivals, luggage and trekking gear are no problem, and the same car and driver stay with you for Norbulingka, Naddi, Kareri or the drive on to Dalhousie, Manali or Amritsar. Drivers in India stay with the car for the whole trip and arrange their own lodging; our private driver in India page explains how that works, what is included and what to tip. Ask for a quote rather than relying on figures on the internet; the price depends on the car class and the number of days, not just the distance.
Self-drive hire exists in Delhi but we do not recommend it for a first trip. Indian highway driving and hill roads at night are not where you want to learn.
Which option should you choose? Comparison table
| Option | Door-to-door time | Indicative cost per person | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flight to Gaggal + taxi | 4–5 hours | US$40–150 air fare plus taxi | Short trips, anyone who dislikes night travel | Weather cancellations; small baggage allowance on budget fares |
| HRTC Volvo bus | 11–12 hours overnight | About US$16 | Budget travellers, solo backpackers | Hairpins after midnight; cold AC; little sleep |
| Night train to Pathankot + taxi | 9–10 hours, arriving early morning | US$15–35 train plus shared taxi cost | Rail enthusiasts, those continuing to Amritsar or Jammu | 3 am arrival at Pathankot; two bookings to manage |
| Private car from Delhi | 9–11 hours by day | Ask for a quote; shared by 2–4 people | Families, groups, trekkers, multi-stop Himachal trips | A long day; leave by 6 am |
Costs are public fares as listed on 23 October 2026 and will change; they are a guide to scale, not a quote.
A two-night plan once you arrive
Two nights is the minimum that makes the journey worthwhile; three lets you add Triund. A sample plan for travellers arriving by the morning flight or an overnight bus:
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive McLeod Ganj by late morning. Lunch on Jogiwara Road. Afternoon at the Tsuglagkhang complex (Main Tibetan Temple and Namgyal Monastery) and the forested Lingkhor kora path. Sunset from Naddi. |
| Day 2 | Morning drive to Norbulingka Institute and Gyuto Monastery (about 12 km). Afternoon walk to Bhagsu waterfall and Dharamkot. Evening English conversation class or a Tibetan cooking lesson. |
| Day 3 (optional) | The Triund trek: about 9 km one way to a 2,850 m meadow facing the Dhauladhar, 4–5 hours up, 3 down. Start by 8 am; there is a Forest Department fee at the Gallu check-post. Or a gentler day: Kangra Fort and Masroor rock temples by car. |
| Onward | Fly or bus back to Delhi; or drive 4–5 hours to Dalhousie and Khajjiar (see our Dalhousie–Khajjiar guide); or two days on the Kareri Lake trek; or 5–6 hours to Amritsar for the Golden Temple. |
Dharamshala also fits neatly into a longer northern loop: Delhi, Amritsar, Dharamshala, then Shimla or Manali and back to Delhi, as in our two-week India itinerary.
When to travel and what the season does to each option
March–June and mid-September–November are the easy months: dry roads, reliable flights, clear mountain views. The monsoon from mid-June to mid-September is severe here; Dharamshala’s IMD normals show over 850 mm of rain in each of July and August, and landslides close hill roads for hours at a time, so a car or bus journey can run late and flights are often cancelled. December to February brings cold nights, occasional snow in McLeod Ganj and dense fog on the Delhi plains that delays morning flights and makes night driving slow; the roads themselves stay open. Note that since an order of 6 January 2026 the Kangra administration requires prior police permission for the Triund, Kareri and Adi Himani Chamunda routes, with permissions void during IMD weather alerts; ask locally what applies on your dates. For an all-India overview see our first-time India travel guide.
Practical notes for international travellers
Carry your passport on every journey; it is checked at airport entry, sometimes on trains and at the HRTC counter. Keep some cash: the ISBT and Pathankot station are not card-friendly, and McLeod Ganj ATMs run dry on weekends. Mobile data works along the whole route except in short hill stretches. On the bus, keep valuables on you rather than in the hold. Your hotel will register you and give a C-form copy; keep it. If you book transport or a tour with us: a 20% deposit locks your dates and price; full refund if cancelled within 48 hours of paying; balance before the trip; pay by card via Razorpay (international cards accepted) or PayPal.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Dharamshala from Delhi?
About 480 km by the shorter road through Chandigarh and Una, or 520 km via NH44 and Pathankot. Driving takes 9–11 hours with stops. By air it is roughly 400 km and 1 h 30 min to Gaggal airport. The nearest main-line railway station, Pathankot Cantt, is a further 90 km and 2.5–3 hours from Dharamshala by taxi.
Which airlines fly Delhi to Dharamshala?
As of 23 October 2026, IndiGo and SpiceJet operate non-stop flights between Delhi and Gaggal (DHM), roughly one to two departures each per day, with a flight time of about 1 h 20–1 h 40 min. Schedules change by season and the airport closes in poor visibility, so check the airline websites close to your travel dates and keep a buffer before international connections.
Is the overnight bus from Delhi to Dharamshala safe and comfortable?
HRTC Volvo (Himsuta) buses are the standard choice for budget travellers and are used by many solo foreigners. They are reclining seaters, not sleepers, and take 11–12 hours with a couple of stops. Book from ISBT Kashmere Gate or Majnu ka Tilla, keep valuables with you, and take a layer against the air conditioning.
Can I take a train from Delhi to Dharamshala?
Not directly. Take the Jammu Rajdhani (12425, New Delhi 20:40) or Uttar Sampark Kranti (12445, 20:50) to Pathankot Cantt, arriving 03:10 or 03:50, then a taxi for 90 km. The Dhauladhar Express from Delhi Sarai Rohilla arrives Pathankot at 08:20 but is slower. Confirm times on IRCTC before booking.
How many days do I need in Dharamshala?
Two nights covers the Tsuglagkhang complex, the Lingkhor, Norbulingka, Bhagsu and Naddi at an easy pace. A third night lets you do the Triund day hike or a car trip to Kangra Fort and the Masroor rock temples. Many visitors stay a week or more for meditation courses, volunteering or the Kareri Lake trek.
Is it better to fly or drive from Delhi to Dharamshala?
Fly if you are short on time and travelling light; it is the only option under five hours. Drive if you are two or more people, carry trekking gear, dislike night travel or plan to continue to Dalhousie, Manali or Amritsar, because the same car then serves the whole trip. In monsoon and winter fog the road is also the more reliable choice.
