Goa Holiday
Beaches, Old Goa — and an honest plan.
Goa is one of India’s best-known beach coasts: lively in the north, quieter in the south, with Portuguese-era churches and towns in between. Here is how to choose your side, when to go, the beach rules that keep you safe, and how Goa fits a wider India trip. Written by a travel company based in the Himalaya that arranges Goa with local teams.
- 125 km 78 mi of coastline
- Nov–Mar the main season
- 3–5 days for a beach stay
- Checked 20 Oct 2026
Is Goa good for a holiday, and when should I go?
Yes — Goa suits a beach holiday from about November to March, when the weather is cooler and most foreign visitors come. North Goa (Baga, Calangute, Anjuna) is lively; South Goa (Palolem, Patnem, Agonda) is quieter. Add Old Goa’s UNESCO-listed churches. In the monsoon, sea swimming is not allowed. Allow 3–5 days; we arrange Goa as part of your India trip.
North Goa vs South Goa: which side suits you?
Goa’s coast is about 125 km (78 mi) long, with at least 83 km (52 mi) of beaches. The two halves feel very different — choose the side first, then the beach.
| North Goa | South Goa | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Lively — Baga is known for its nightlife, Calangute for parties and water sports | Quieter — Patnem and Galgibag are among the most tranquil beaches; Betalbatim has fewer visitors |
| Beaches | Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator, Arambol, Keri | Palolem, Patnem, Agonda, Colva, Betalbatim, Galgibag |
| Good for | Nightlife, cafés, water sports; Arambol for yoga and a slower pace | Families, couples, long sandy walks; Palolem’s sheltered bay is one of Goa’s safer swimming spots |
| Nearby | Panaji, Fort Aguada and Chapora Fort; Anjuna is about 26 km (16 mi) from Panaji | Margao (Madgaon), Cabo de Rama fort, Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary; Palolem is about 38 km (24 mi) from Madgaon |
Character notes from Incredible India (Ministry of Tourism); beach lists from the Government of Goa. Not every beach is quiet or busy every week — Majorda, in the south, can be crowded.
Beyond the beach: Old Goa, Panaji and the hinterland
Goa was the capital of the Portuguese Indies, and Portuguese rule lasted until 1961. That history is what makes it different from any other Indian beach coast.
Old Goa's churches (UNESCO)
The Churches and Convents of Goa were listed by UNESCO in 1986: seven monuments including the Basilica of Bom Jesus (1605), which holds the tomb of St Francis Xavier, and the Sé Cathedral (built 1562–1652). Old Goa is about 10 km (6 mi) east of Panaji — half a day is enough.
Panaji and Fontainhas
Goa’s small capital sits on the river. Its Fontainhas quarter has been declared a cultural quarter — narrow lanes of colour-washed Portuguese-style houses that are best explored on foot in the morning.
Forts on the river mouths
Fort Aguada, Chapora, Tiracol, Corjuem and Cabo de Rama were built at strategic points, usually where a river meets the sea. Most combine well with a beach day.
Waterfalls, spices and wildlife
Dudhsagar waterfall, with a railway bridge halfway up its face, is a day trip inland. Spice plantations offer guided walks; early-morning dolphin-watching trips leave from Palolem, and Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is a short drive away.
When to go to Goa
The short answer: November to March. Here is what each part of the year means on the coast.
November to March — the main season
Foreign visitors, mainly from Europe, come in winter. Incredible India names November to March (Palolem: November to February) as the best time, with cooler weather.
April and May — before the rains
The Government of Goa notes that domestic visitors from across India come in the summer and rainy season. Ask us what to expect for your dates.
June to October — the monsoon
The UK FCDO notes that India’s monsoon usually runs from June to October. In Goa, swimming in the sea and coastal water sports are prohibited during the monsoon; red flags mark unsafe stretches. The hinterland turns green and waterfalls are full, but this is not a beach holiday.
Weather varies year to year. Confirm sea and water-sport rules locally when you arrive.
Beach safety: the flags and rules to know
Goa’s beaches are popular, but the sea has strong currents. The Goa Tourism Department and the UK FCDO give clear advice:
- Swim between the red-and-yellow flagsThey mark zones where lifeguards are on watch. Never enter the water where a red flag flies, and listen to the lifeguard on duty.
- Water sports between the chequered flagsJet skis and boats operate between black-and-white chequered flags — keep swimming and water sports apart.
- No swimming after drinking, after sunset or in the monsoonAnd don’t jump or dive from rocks. The FCDO adds that most beaches across India have no flags or lifesaving equipment, and that tourist boats rarely carry life-saving equipment.
- No alcohol on the beachAlcohol, drugs and smoking are prohibited on Goa’s beaches, and nudity is forbidden — offences can bring fines or jail.
- Watch your drinkThe FCDO reports spiked drinks and cases of methanol poisoning from alcoholic drinks in India — methanol cannot be detected by taste or smell. Don’t accept drinks from strangers or leave yours unattended, and avoid isolated beaches alone at any time of day.

How to add Goa to an India trip
Goa works best as the beach end of a longer India trip. North and south India are far apart — join them with a flight, not a drive.
- Golden Triangle, then Goa (Nov–Feb)Delhi, Agra and Jaipur by private car, then a flight to Goa for 3–5 days on the beach. See the Golden Triangle tour.
- Kerala and GoaBackwaters and tea hills, then the beach — our 8-day Kerala tour combines well with a few days in Goa.
- Pick the right airportGoa has two airports a considerable distance apart: Dabolim (GOI), about 4 km (2.5 mi) from Bogmalo beach, and Manohar International at Mopa (GOX). Book the one closer to your beach — we’ll tell you which.
- How we arrange GoaWe arrange Goa with local teams we work with. Our office in Himachal plans the whole trip, sends one day-by-day plan with a US-dollar total, and stays reachable on WhatsApp before and during your stay.
Practical basics
Visa
Check whether your passport qualifies for India’s e-Visa and apply yourself only at the official site indianvisaonline.gov.in — beware look-alike sites that charge extra. Both Goa airports are on the official e-Visa airport list. We are not a visa agency; see our e-Visa guide.
Getting around
Goa’s sights are spread out. A private car with a driver is the easy way to combine beaches, Old Goa and the forts. Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip.
Guides and bookings
Goa Tourism advises using officially authorised travel agents and guides, and asking a guide for their identity card. Book boat trips and water sports only with operators you have checked.
Health
For vaccinations and health advice before your trip, consult your doctor; see CDC or NHS Fit for Travel.

Questions travellers ask
Is North Goa or South Goa better?
It depends on what you want. North Goa (Baga, Calangute, Anjuna) is lively, with nightlife and water sports. South Goa (Palolem, Patnem, Agonda) is quieter and suits families and couples. You can stay on one side and visit the other for a day.
What is the best time to visit Goa?
November to March, when the weather is cooler and the sea is open for swimming between the lifeguard flags. From June to October is the monsoon, when swimming in the sea and coastal water sports are prohibited.
Is it safe to swim in Goa?
Swim only between the red-and-yellow flags, where lifeguards are on watch, and never at a red flag. Don’t swim after drinking, after sunset or during the monsoon. The UK FCDO warns that strong currents cause drownings every year in India.
How many days do I need in Goa?
Three to five days is enough for a beach stay with a half day in Old Goa and Panaji. Add a day for Dudhsagar waterfall or a spice plantation.
Which airport should I fly into for Goa?
Goa has two airports: Dabolim (GOI) and Manohar International at Mopa (GOX). They are a considerable distance apart, so choose the one closer to your hotel. Both are on the official e-Visa airport list — check it before you book.
Can you drink alcohol on Goa's beaches?
No. Goa Tourism lists alcohol, drugs and smoking as prohibited on the beaches, with fines or jail. Drink at licensed restaurants and keep an eye on your glass.
Can I combine Goa with the Taj Mahal?
Yes. Fly from Delhi to Goa after the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur). We plan both parts and send one quote.
