Short answer: The best time to visit north India depends on which north India you mean. For Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and the rest of Rajasthan, it is October to March, with November and February–March the most comfortable. For the Himalayan hill stations of Himachal and Uttarakhand, it is March to June and again September to November. For Ladakh and Spiti, it is June to September. December and January are cold and foggy on the plains but bring snow to the hills.
Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)
- Plains (Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan, Varanasi): October–March; avoid April–June heat and July–September rain.
- Hill stations (Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Mussoorie): March–June and September–November; snow in December–February.
- High Himalaya (Ladakh, Spiti): June–September by road; the Manali–Leh and Manali–Kaza roads have been shut since 15 October 2026.
- Kashmir: April–June for gardens and Gulmarg meadows, December–February for snow; Srinagar’s Dal Lake is cold but open in winter.
- Dates to plan around: Diwali 8 November 2026; Jaipur Literature Festival 14–18 January 2027; Haridwar Ardh Kumbh 14 January–20 April 2027; Holi Monday 22 March 2027.
- Fog: late December to mid-January regularly delays morning flights and trains in Delhi and across the plains.

Why does north India have three different seasons at once?
North India stretches from the Thar Desert at sea level to passes above 5,000 m, so the same week can be 40°C in Jodhpur and below freezing at Rohtang. Three climate zones matter for planning:
- The plains: Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Amritsar, Varanasi, Lucknow. Hot summers, a July–September monsoon (lighter in western Rajasthan), and a cool, dry winter from November to February.
- The hill stations at 1,500–2,200 m: Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie, Mussoorie, Nainital. Mild summers, a heavy monsoon with landslides, snow from late December to February.
- The high Himalaya above 3,000 m: Ladakh, Spiti, Kinnaur’s upper valleys, the Char Dham temples. Dry and cold; road access only from late spring to autumn.
Our general best time to visit India guide covers the whole country, including the south; this page stays north of the Vindhyas. Temperatures below are typical ranges from long-term averages and our own experience, not forecasts.
North India month by month: which region works when?
| Month | Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan, Varanasi | Himachal and Uttarakhand hills | Ladakh, Spiti and Kashmir |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Cold mornings 5–8°C, foggy; good by midday; peak hotel prices | Snow in Shimla and Manali; roads above Manali closed | Leh by air only, −15°C nights; Gulmarg ski season; Spiti via Shimla only |
| February | Warming to 20–25°C by day; clear; our favourite month for Rajasthan | Late snow, quiet, cheap; some hotels still closed | Still winter; Chadar-style cold in Ladakh |
| March | 25–32°C, Holi on 22 March 2027; ideal first half | Spring; snow still at Solang and Kufri early in the month | Kashmir almond blossom; Ladakh roads still shut |
| April | Hot, 35–40°C by late month; sightseeing early and late only | Excellent; blossom, clear views, before the May crowds | Srinagar tulip garden; Ladakh flights only |
| May | Very hot, 40°C+; we do not recommend Rajasthan | Peak domestic season; Rohtang usually opens; book early | Kashmir at its greenest; Manali–Leh opens late May or June |
| June | Hottest and then humid as monsoon approaches | Busy; pre-monsoon showers from late June | Ladakh and Spiti season begins in earnest |
| July–August | Monsoon; humid, green, fewer visitors, lower prices | Heavy rain, landslides; we avoid long mountain drives | Best months for Ladakh and Spiti, which lie beyond the monsoon |
| September | Rain easing; still humid; good value | Clearing from mid-month; apples in Kinnaur and Shimla hills | Clear skies, autumn colours; Ladakh road still open |
| October | Season opens; 30°C days, cool nights; Pushkar Mela late Oct–Nov | Excellent; Kullu Dussehra; first snow on the passes | Roads close mid-month (15 Oct in 2026); last Spiti loop trips |
| November | Ideal: 25–28°C, clear; Diwali on 8 Nov 2026 | Crisp and clear, quiet after Diwali; cold nights | Kashmir autumn chinar colours; Leh by air |
| December | Pleasant days, cold nights, fog from late month; Christmas peak | Snow possible from mid-month; Christmas–New Year is the busiest week | Gulmarg snow; Ladakh very cold; Spiti winter trips via Shimla |

When is the best time for Delhi, Agra and the Golden Triangle?
October to March. Within that, November and February to mid-March are the sweet spot: days of 22–28°C, cool evenings, clear skies for the Taj at sunrise, and no fog. December and January are fine for sightseeing, but Delhi’s winter fog, usually worst between about 25 December and 15 January, delays early trains and flights and can hide the Taj until mid-morning. Build buffer time rather than avoiding the months.
From April the heat builds fast: Delhi and Agra reach 40°C by late April, and Jaipur is similar. You can still visit in April and early May if you sightsee from 06:00 to 10:00 and after 16:00, but we would not plan a first trip then. The monsoon arrives in Delhi at the end of June and lasts to mid-September; it is humid rather than constantly wet, and hotels are cheaper. Our Golden Triangle month-by-month guide goes deeper.
When is the best time for Rajasthan?
The same window, with two refinements. Western Rajasthan (Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner) is the hottest part of the north in summer and the driest in the monsoon, so it works slightly later into April and slightly earlier in September than Delhi. Udaipur and the Aravalli hills are a few degrees cooler and greener after the rains.
Festival dates shape bookings here more than anywhere. The Pushkar camel fair falls in the week before Kartik Purnima, in late October or November depending on the year; our Pushkar Mela guide has this year’s dates. The Jaipur Literature Festival runs 14–18 January 2027 (NewsBytes, checked 30 Oct 2026) and fills Jaipur’s hotels. The Jaisalmer Desert Festival is held on the days before the February full moon, expected around 18–20 February 2027; confirm with Rajasthan Tourism before you book around it.
When is the best time for Himachal and the Uttarakhand hills?
Two seasons, not one. March to June is spring and early summer: rhododendrons in March, apple blossom in April, warm 20–25°C days in May, and the mountains clear. May and early June are also the peak domestic holiday season, when Shimla and Manali are crowded and hotel prices rise; April and the second half of June are easier. Rohtang Pass usually opens in May and needs a permit; it is closed on Tuesdays throughout its season.
Mid-September to November is autumn: the monsoon has washed the dust out of the air, the views are the clearest of the year, and the Kullu Dussehra fills Kullu for a week in October. November is quiet and cold at night but excellent by day. Our best time to visit Himachal guide covers each town, with snow and crowd levels for Shimla and Manali.
December to February is winter: snow in Shimla and Manali from late December in most years, the Atal Tunnel open to Sissu for easy snow access, and ski runs at Solang and Narkanda. It is beautiful but needs flexible plans, since a heavy fall can close roads for a day. Our Himachal snowfall guide for winter 2026–27 tracks what is happening this season.
July to mid-September is the monsoon. Himachal receives heavy rain, and landslides close roads without warning. We take bookings for short stays in this period but do not plan long mountain drives.
When is the best time for Ladakh, Spiti and Kashmir?
| Region | Road season | Best months | Winter access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ladakh (Leh, Pangong, Nubra) | Manali–Leh roughly late May/June to mid-October (closed since 15 Oct 2026) | June–September | Flights to Leh year-round; very cold, for experienced travellers |
| Spiti (Kaza, Tabo, Key) | Manali–Kaza via Kunzum roughly June to mid-October; Shimla–Kinnaur road open most of the year | June–October for the loop; February–March for snow leopards | Via Shimla and Kinnaur only, 4×4 and heated homestays |
| Kashmir (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam) | Jammu–Srinagar highway open year-round, with winter closures after snow | April–June and September–October; December–February for snow | Fly to Srinagar; Gulmarg gondola runs in winter |
Ladakh and Spiti sit in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, which is why July and August, the worst months for the hill stations, are the best months there. Our Spiti month-by-month guide goes into detail, including the road closure dates each year.
Which festivals and events should you plan around?
- Diwali, 8 November 2026: lamps, fireworks and family travel; book trains and hotels early and expect closures on the day.
- Pushkar Mela, late October–November: camels and pilgrims in Rajasthan; see our guide linked above.
- Jaipur Literature Festival, 14–18 January 2027: five days of talks at Hotel Clarks Amer; Jaipur hotels fill.
- Haridwar Ardh Kumbh, 14 January–20 April 2027: a huge pilgrimage on the Ganges, with the biggest bathing days in early March and mid-April; our Kumbh Mela tour guide explains how visitors can attend.
- Holi, Monday 22 March 2027: the festival of colours, best experienced in Vrindavan, Jaipur or Udaipur; our Holi festival tour page covers safe ways to join in.
- Kullu Dussehra, October: a week-long gathering of village deities in the Kullu Valley.
Our India festival calendar for 2027 lists the full year with sources.
So when should you actually book?
If you want the plains and the hills in one trip, go in October–November or late February–April. If Rajasthan and the Taj are the priority, November to mid-March. If the Himalaya are the priority, choose April–June or September–November for the hill stations and June–September for Ladakh and Spiti. If you want snow, late December to February in Shimla, Manali or Gulmarg.
Whatever month you pick, book December–January and May–June travel at least two to three months ahead, since these are the Indian peak seasons as well as the foreign ones. For the other months, four to six weeks is usually enough for good hotels.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit north India overall?
November, for a trip that mixes Delhi, Rajasthan and the Himalayan hill stations: warm clear days on the plains, crisp air in the hills, and no fog yet. February and March are the runners-up. If the high Himalaya of Ladakh or Spiti are the goal, the answer changes to July to September.
Is December a good time to visit north India?
Yes, with buffers. Days in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur are pleasant at 20–24°C, nights are cold, and fog arrives in the last week, delaying morning trains and flights. Shimla and Manali usually get snow from mid-December. Prices peak over Christmas and New Year, so book early and avoid tight same-day connections.
When is the monsoon in north India?
Roughly the end of June to mid-September on the plains and in the hill stations, with the heaviest rain in July and August. Western Rajasthan gets much less. Ladakh and Spiti lie beyond the monsoon, so those are their best months. Hill roads in Himachal and Uttarakhand can close after landslides.
When can you see snow in north India?
Late December to February in Shimla, Manali, Dalhousie and Mussoorie in most years, and from October onwards on the high passes. Gulmarg in Kashmir has reliable snow from December to March. Atal Tunnel gives year-round access to Sissu for snow without needing Rohtang Pass, which is closed in winter.
Which months should I avoid in north India?
Avoid May and June on the plains, when Delhi and Rajasthan exceed 40°C, and July and August in the Himachal and Uttarakhand hills, when landslides disrupt travel. Both periods are fine elsewhere: the hills in May and June, and Ladakh and Spiti in July and August.
When do the Ladakh and Spiti roads open and close?
The Manali–Leh highway and the Manali–Kaza road usually open between late May and June and close in mid-October; both closed on 15 October 2026. Leh is reachable by air all year, and Spiti via Shimla and Kinnaur, which stays open most of the winter apart from short snow closures.
