Rajasthan Tour
Forts, desert and lakes — one car, one driver, twelve days.
Jaipur’s pink walled city, the blue houses below Mehrangarh in Jodhpur, the golden fort of Jaisalmer where people still live inside the walls, and the lakes of Udaipur. Two nights or more in each city, honest notes on the long drive days, the months to go and the months to avoid — planned by a small team in North India, quoted in US dollars.

What is a good Rajasthan tour itinerary?
A classic Rajasthan tour takes 10–12 days: Jaipur (2 nights) → Jodhpur (2) → Jaisalmer (2) → Udaipur (3), best from November to March; add Agra if you want the Taj Mahal. Travel by private car with one driver, because the desert drives are long. Suzu Travels plans it with a US-dollar quote, and a 20% deposit holds your dates.
The route: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur
Rajasthan rewards a loop through the desert rather than a dash between cities. Start with Jaipur, close to Delhi; go west to Jodhpur and the Thar Desert at Jaisalmer; finish slowly by the lakes of Udaipur, where you can fly out.
Delhi → Jaipur → Jodhpur → Jaisalmer → Udaipur, then fly out from Udaipur’s Maharana Pratap airport (UDR). There are no official road distances for the desert legs, so we don’t print guesses: Jodhpur → Jaisalmer and Jaisalmer → Udaipur are each a full day on the road.
Twelve days in Rajasthan, day by day
A sample we build from, not a fixed package. Nights can move, cities can be dropped or added; the pace stays human.
-
DAY 1Arrive in Delhi
Your driver meets you at the airport — name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip. Check in and rest; many international flights land late at night.
-
DAY 2Delhi → Jaipur
Drive to Jaipur and settle in. If you arrive early enough, a first walk in the walled old city, founded in 1727 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019.
-
DAY 3Jaipur
Amber Fort in the morning — one of the six Hill Forts of Rajasthan on UNESCO’s list — then the bazaars and palaces of the pink city. Your driver handles parking and waits for you.
-
DAY 4Jaipur → Jodhpur
A long drive day west towards the desert. We start after breakfast and break the drive with a stop; you arrive in Jodhpur for sunset.
-
DAY 5Jodhpur
Mehrangarh Fort on its rocky hill about 125 m (410 ft) above the city: seven gates and a museum with more than 15,000 objects, open 9:00–17:00. Below it, the old city’s houses in shades of blue.
-
DAY 6Jodhpur → Jaisalmer
A full day across the Thar to the Golden City. Early start, a lunch stop on the way, and the fort glowing in the late light when you arrive.
-
DAY 7Jaisalmer and the dunes
Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Qila), one of India’s few ‘living forts’, where people still live inside the walls; the carved Patwon, Nathmal and Salim Singh havelis; Gadisar Lake. In the evening, the Sam sand dunes and a night at a desert camp that we arrange with a local team.
-
DAY 8Jaisalmer → Udaipur: the drive day
The longest day on the road. We leave early, stop for meals and breaks, and arrive in Udaipur in the evening. If you’d rather not, we can shorten the plan or skip Jaisalmer — ask us.
-
DAY 9Udaipur, the City of Lakes
A slow morning, then the City Palace above Lake Pichola — a lake that dates back to 1362.
-
DAY 10Udaipur, or a fort day trip
Stay in town, or ask us to add a day trip to Kumbhalgarh or Chittorgarh, both part of the UNESCO Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
-
DAY 11Udaipur at your pace
A free day for the old city and the lakeside, with your driver on call.
-
DAY 12Fly out from Udaipur
Your driver takes you to Maharana Pratap airport (UDR) for your onward flight home.

How many nights in each city — and why
The question that makes or breaks a Rajasthan trip. Our suggestion. Best months for Udaipur and Jaisalmer are Incredible India’s (the Government of India’s tourism site); the others are our planning experience:
| City | Nights | Why stay | Best months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jaipur | 2 | Amber Fort and the UNESCO walled city; closest to Delhi and Agra | October – March |
| Jodhpur | 2 | Mehrangarh Fort and the blue old city | October – March |
| Jaisalmer | 2 (one at a desert camp) | The living fort, the havelis, the dunes at sunset | November – March |
| Udaipur | 3 | Lakes, the City Palace, day trips to hill forts; the airport to fly out | September – March |
| Agra (optional) | 1 | The Taj Mahal at sunrise — closed on Fridays | October – March |
Only 7 days? Keep Jaipur and Udaipur and add Jodhpur; Jaisalmer needs two extra days to be worth the drive.
Add the Taj Mahal, a tiger safari or the Golden Triangle
The Taj Mahal
Agra to Jaipur is 232 km (144 mi) by road, so the easiest way is to start in Agra: Delhi → Agra → Jaipur, then the loop above. Remember the Taj is closed on Fridays. See our Taj Mahal tour from Delhi.
A tiger safari at Ranthambore
Ranthambore National Park, at Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan, is often added to a Jaipur stay. Safari permits are booked only through the Rajasthan Forest Department’s official portal — our tiger safari guide explains seasons and booking.
The Golden Triangle first
Delhi, Agra and Jaipur are the start of most first trips. Add Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur and you have two weeks; our Golden Triangle tour has published prices.
The Himalaya after
Prefer mountains to more desert? Our 2-week India itinerary pairs Jaipur with Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala — our home region.
When to go: November to March, not in the hot months
Rajasthan is a winter destination. The official monthly figures from Incredible India explain why:
November – March: go
Warm days and cool nights. In January Jaisalmer ranges from about 4.6 °C to 29 °C (40–84 °F), Jodhpur from 5 °C to 30 °C (41–86 °F). Bring a warm layer for desert evenings.
October: good
Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur are pleasant; Jaisalmer’s best season starts in November.
April – June: too hot
From April, desert towns pass 40 °C (104 °F) — in May Jaisalmer reaches about 46 °C (115 °F) and Jodhpur about 45 °C (113 °F). We suggest other dates, or the Himalaya instead.
July – September: monsoon
The rainy months. Udaipur’s season starts in September; ask us before you plan the desert in these months.
What's included — and what isn't
Included
Private air-conditioned car and the same English-speaking driver for all 12 days, fuel, tolls, parking and state taxes; hotel nights with breakfast in the tier you choose (3★, 4★ or heritage); one desert-camp night at Jaisalmer; airport pick-up and drop.
Not included
International and domestic flights, the India e-Visa, monument tickets, local guides, lunches and dinners, camel or jeep rides, tips. We can add tickets, guides and desert rides to the same quote.
Your driver
Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip. One driver for twelve days means one person who knows your plan and your pace — see how our private car with driver works.
Who you deal with
Suzu Travels, a small team with a real office in Himachal Pradesh, from the first message to the airport drop. One WhatsApp chat, one US-dollar quote.
Practical notes before you book
Visa
Check whether your passport qualifies for India’s e-Visa and apply yourself only at the official site indianvisaonline.gov.in — beware look-alike sites that charge extra. We are not a visa agency. Our India e-Visa guide walks you through it.
Safety
The UK Foreign Office (advice updated 7 October 2026) asks visitors to take care with food and drinks from strangers and to stay alert in crowds; women travellers should read its advice on harassment. Check the latest advice before you travel.
Heat and health
From April, desert towns pass 40 °C (104 °F) — Incredible India’s monthly data. Consult your doctor; see CDC or NHS Fit for Travel.
Jaisalmer evenings
The fort town is quiet at night and many shops close early, so plan shopping for the day. Desert camps, camel and jeep rides are arranged with local teams; we tell you exactly what is included before you pay.
Prices
The 12-day Rajasthan tour is quoted on request — hotel tier, month, number of travellers and flights change the total. You receive a day-by-day plan with a US-dollar total and what it covers before you pay anything. The Golden Triangle part has published prices:

Questions travellers ask
How many days do I need for Rajasthan?
Ten to twelve days for the four classic cities — Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur — with two nights or more in each. With seven days, keep Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur and leave Jaisalmer for another trip.
What is the best time to visit Rajasthan?
November to March. Udaipur’s season starts in September, but Jaisalmer is best from November to March. From April the desert towns pass 40 °C (104 °F), and in May Jaisalmer reaches about 46 °C (115 °F), so we suggest other dates.
Is Jaisalmer worth the drive?
In the cool months, yes: its fort is one of India’s few ‘living forts’, where people still live inside the walls, and the Sam sand dunes are close by. The drives in and out are full days, so give it at least two nights — or skip it in summer and on short trips.
In which order should I visit Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur?
Start with Jaipur, closest to Delhi and Agra, then go west to Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, and finish in Udaipur, where you can fly out from Maharana Pratap airport (UDR) instead of driving back.
Can I add the Taj Mahal or a tiger safari?
Yes. Agra to Jaipur is 232 km (144 miles), so start Delhi → Agra → Jaipur. Ranthambore National Park, at Sawai Madhopur, is often added to a Jaipur stay; safari permits are booked only through the Rajasthan Forest Department’s official portal.
Is a car and driver better than trains in Rajasthan?
For this loop, a private car is the easiest: the desert legs are long, and a car lets you stop when you like and keeps your luggage with you. Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip.
Is Rajasthan safe for tourists?
Take the same care as anywhere busy. The UK Foreign Office (advice updated 7 October 2026) asks visitors to take care with food and drinks from strangers and to stay alert in crowds; women travellers should read its advice on harassment.
