Short answer: From Kolkata the cleanest Himachal tour package is a late-morning IndiGo non-stop to Chandigarh (about 2 hours 20 minutes), a car to Shimla the same afternoon, and a 5-night Shimla–Manali package from ₹12,499 per person on twin sharing. Families who prefer the train take the daily 12311 Netaji Express from Howrah, which reaches Chandigarh in about 28 hours and Kalka 90 minutes later. Allow 7–8 days away from Kolkata by air, 10 by train.
Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)
- Best gateway: Chandigarh. IndiGo 6E874 is the only non-stop, around 11:35 from Kolkata, 2 h 15–35 min; it does not run every day of the week on every schedule, so check your date.
- By train: 12311 Netaji Express, Howrah 21:55 → Chandigarh 01:35 → Kalka 03:00 on day 3, daily (RailMitra).
- Via Delhi: 2 h 20 min flights all day, then 7–8 h by road to Shimla.
- Core package: Shimla Manali from Chandigarh, 5N/6D, from ₹12,499.
- Bigger trip: Incredible Himachal from Delhi, 8N/9D, from ₹18,999.
- Days off: 7–8 by air, 10 by train, for a 6-day package.
- Toy train note: Kalka–Shimla runs Dharampur–Shimla only until the Kalka section reopens after 30 Nov 2026.

How do you get from Kolkata to Himachal?
Kolkata to Shimla is roughly 1,700 km by road, which nobody drives. Your choice is between one flight, two flights, or the train that Bengali families have taken to the Shimla hills for generations. Our packages start at the airport or station you choose; the fare to get there is yours.
| Route from Kolkata | Travel time | Frequency (checked 30 Oct 2026) | Then |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fly CCU → Chandigarh | 2 h 15–35 min | IndiGo 6E874, about 11:35; listed between five and ten flights a week (FlightsFrom) | Shimla 3–3.5 h, Manali 7–8 h, Dharamshala 6–7 h |
| Fly CCU → Delhi | about 2 h 20 min | IndiGo, Air India, Akasa, SpiceJet; many a day | Shimla 7–8 h, Manali 12–14 h by road, or Alliance Air Delhi–Shimla six days a week |
| Train 12311 Netaji Express, Howrah → Chandigarh / Kalka | about 28 h to Chandigarh, 29 h to Kalka | Daily, 21:55 from Howrah (RailMitra) | Car from Chandigarh at 01:35 or Kalka at 03:00; Shimla by breakfast |
| Train to Delhi (Rajdhani, Duronto, Poorva) | 17–24 h | Several daily from Howrah and Sealdah | Same as the Delhi option |
In our experience the Chandigarh flight is the right answer for most Kolkata families, because the 11:35 departure lands at about 14:00 and the car reaches Shimla before dark. The one caveat is frequency: the FlightsFrom listing we checked shows the route as between five and ten flights a week depending on the season, so if it does not operate on your date, Delhi is the fallback. Flight numbers change with each schedule; confirm on the IndiGo site before paying for the package.
Should Kolkata families take the Netaji Express instead?
Yes, if you have the days and the children are old enough to enjoy a night and a day on a train. The 12311 Netaji Express, which Kolkata still calls the Kalka Mail, leaves Howrah at 21:55, passes through Delhi the next evening and reaches Chandigarh at 01:35 and Kalka at 03:00 on the third day (RailMitra timetable, checked 30 Oct 2026). Timetables change a few times a year, so check your ticket.
The middle-of-the-night arrival sounds awkward but works well. Our driver meets the train at Chandigarh (we prefer it to Kalka: better lit, easier parking), you sleep in the car on the 3-hour climb and reach Shimla for an early breakfast; we ask the hotel for early check-in, which usually costs a part-day charge or is free in off-season. Until 30 November 2026 the Kalka–Shimla toy train is running only between Dharampur and Shimla because the Kalka section is closed for repairs, so the old plan of changing onto the narrow gauge at Kalka does not work this season; our toy train status note has the details.
Book AC 2-tier or AC 3-tier about 60 days ahead for Puja, Christmas and the summer holidays; the train fills from Kolkata, not from the stations in between.
Which day does your Himachal trip really start?
| You arrive | What we do on day one |
|---|---|
| Chandigarh about 14:00 (the IndiGo non-stop) | Drive to Shimla, check in by 18:00, evening on the Ridge |
| Chandigarh 01:35 or Kalka 03:00 (Netaji Express) | Night drive to Shimla, early check-in, rest till lunch, Kufri in the afternoon |
| Delhi before 10:00 | Drive to Shimla, arriving by evening |
| Delhi after noon | Night in Delhi, Shimla on day two; or the Alliance Air morning flight to Shimla next day |
For the return, the Chandigarh flight to Kolkata departs in the afternoon on the current schedule, which means leaving Manali by 06:30. If that feels early, finish the trip in Shimla instead of Manali, or add a night at Chandigarh. Train passengers board 12312 at Chandigarh in the early morning; we drop you the previous evening or at dawn depending on the timetable.
How many days off do you need from Kolkata?
By air via Chandigarh, a 5-night, 6-day package needs 7 days away from Kolkata if you take the morning flight out and the afternoon flight back, 8 if you want an easier last day. Via Delhi, 8–9. By Netaji Express both ways, 10: two nights on trains each way plus the six days in the hills. The 8-night Incredible Himachal needs 10 days by air.
Short trips from Kolkata rarely satisfy. If you have only five days, our Manali-only package from Delhi, 4N/5D from ₹14,999, with the first flight out and last flight back, is the tightest plan that still leaves two full days in Manali.
Which Himachal packages suit Kolkata travellers?
| Package | Starts | Duration | From (per person, twin sharing, Deluxe, off-season) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shimla Manali from Chandigarh | Chandigarh or Kalka | 5N/6D | ₹12,499 |
| Shimla Manali from Delhi | Delhi | 5N/6D | ₹14,999 |
| Kullu Manali Honeymoon | Chandigarh or Delhi | 4N/5D | ₹12,999 |
| Dharamshala Dalhousie from Delhi | Delhi | 4N/5D | ₹16,499 |
| Incredible Himachal from Delhi | Delhi | 8N/9D | ₹18,999 |
| Eccentric Kinnaur from Chandigarh | Chandigarh | 6N/7D | ₹24,999 |
Every package includes hotels, a private car throughout, breakfast and dinner, tolls and parking. Train or air fares to the start point, lunches, entry tickets and Rohtang permits are extra. Off-season rates apply from 1 November to 19 December and 6 January to 14 March; peak dates are about 25% higher.
Kolkata groups tend to be larger than average, often three generations, and we see the same choices repeatedly:
- Puja or winter holiday with grandparents: Shimla–Manali in a Tempo Traveller, with hotels close to the Mall in both towns so nobody has to climb.
- Couples: the Kullu Manali honeymoon trip, which our Manali honeymoon guide describes.
- Already done Shimla–Manali: Dharamshala–Dalhousie, which is quieter and greener, or Kinnaur for the mountain views at Kalpa.
- Snow at any cost: Manali in January, with Sissu through the Atal Tunnel; see Manali in January.
When should Kolkata travellers go?
Kolkata’s holiday calendar and Himachal’s seasons overlap nicely in places and badly in others.
- Durga Puja (October): the biggest Bengali travel week, and in Himachal it is Kullu Dussehra week too, with peak pricing and heavy traffic on the Manali road. Book by July. Our note on the October 2026 jams explains why we route Puja groups through Chandigarh rather than Delhi.
- Kali Puja and Diwali (8 November 2026) to mid-December: off-season rates, dry roads, cold clear nights; the best value of the year.
- Christmas and New Year: peak rates from 20 December to 5 January, best chance of snow in town.
- Poila Boishakh and the summer vacation (mid-April to mid-June): busy and about 25% dearer, but Rohtang usually reopens in May and the Kullu valley is at its best.
- Monsoon (July to mid-September): we do not recommend the Shimla–Manali road; Spiti via Shimla is the dry alternative.
What do Kolkata travellers usually get wrong?
Cold and dryness. Kolkata’s winter is 12–15 °C at worst and humid. Shimla in December is near zero at night, Manali below it, and the air is dry enough to crack lips in a day. Pack layers rather than one heavy coat, plus lip balm and moisturiser; rent snow boots and jackets in Manali for the Sissu day.
Comparing with Darjeeling. Himachal distances are much bigger. Darjeeling is a 3-hour drive from Bagdogra; Manali is 7–8 hours from Chandigarh and the Shimla–Manali leg is another 7–8 hours. The sightseeing is spread along the valleys, not clustered in one town. Treat the drives as part of the trip and stop at Pandoh dam, Aut and the Beas riverside dhabas.
Food. Bengali food is easy to find in Manali and Shimla in the Puja and winter seasons; several hotels run Bengali kitchens for the season. Elsewhere, Himachali food is rajma, rice, dal and wheat, and fish is rare in the hills. Tell us if a Bengali kitchen matters and we will choose hotels accordingly.
Altitude. The standard circuit stays below 2,100 m except day trips to Rohtang (3,980 m) or Sissu, so altitude sickness is rare. Kinnaur and Spiti are higher; read the Kalpa guide before choosing those with elderly parents.
How does booking from Kolkata work?
You book your flights or train; we meet you at Chandigarh, Kalka or Delhi. A 20% token confirms the package and is fully refundable if you cancel within 48 hours of paying. After that the advance is non-refundable but the dates can be changed once within six months, which matters if the Netaji Express waitlist does not clear. The balance is paid before the trip by UPI, transfer or card via Razorpay. Our office is at Ghumarwin in Bilaspur district, between Chandigarh and Manali, and our drivers live in the valleys you will travel through.
Kolkata travel agents can buy the same packages at net rates; our Himachal winter packages for travel agents page explains how. The itineraries are the same ones we run for guests from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct flight from Kolkata to Himachal?
Not to any Himachal airport. The nearest gateway with a non-stop from Kolkata is Chandigarh, where IndiGo flies 6E874 around 11:35, about 2 hours 20 minutes, on most but not all days of the week depending on the season. Shimla, Kullu and Kangra airports are reached only via Delhi on small aircraft. Confirm timings on the airline site before booking.
How much does a Himachal tour package from Kolkata cost?
Excluding your flight or train, our 5-night, 6-day Shimla–Manali package starts at ₹12,499 per person on twin sharing from Chandigarh and ₹14,999 from Delhi, in Deluxe hotels at off-season rates. The 8-night Incredible Himachal circuit with Dharamshala and Dalhousie starts at ₹18,999. Peak dates from 20 December to 5 January and 15 March onwards are about 25% higher.
Which train goes from Kolkata to Shimla?
No train reaches Shimla from Kolkata directly. The 12311 Netaji Express leaves Howrah daily at 21:55 and reaches Chandigarh at 01:35 and Kalka at 03:00 on the third day, about 28–29 hours. From there it is a 3-hour drive to Shimla. The Kalka–Shimla toy train is running only from Dharampur until its Kalka section reopens after 30 November 2026.
How many days do you need for Himachal from Kolkata?
Seven to eight days covers a 5-night Shimla–Manali package with flights via Chandigarh; allow nine via Delhi and ten if you take the Netaji Express both ways. The 8-night Incredible Himachal circuit needs ten days by air. With only five days, a Manali-only trip from Delhi on the first and last flights is the shortest plan that still works.
Is Himachal good during the Durga Puja holidays?
Yes for weather, with clear skies and warm days, but it is Kullu Dussehra week in Himachal as well, so hotels in Manali and Shimla are full and prices are at peak. Book by July, travel via Chandigarh rather than Delhi to avoid the worst of the highway traffic, and consider Dharamshala–Dalhousie or Kinnaur if you want quieter hills.
Can we get Bengali food in Shimla and Manali?
In season, yes. Several hotels in Manali and Shimla run Bengali kitchens during Puja, the winter holidays and summer, and a few restaurants near the Manali Mall serve fish curry and rice. Outside those months the choice is Himachali and North Indian food. Tell us when you book and we will pick hotels that cater for Bengali groups.
