Short answer: from Mumbai, fly non-stop to Chandigarh (about 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes, roughly six flights a day from Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports) and start your Himachal trip there. Our 5-night Shimla and Manali trip from Chandigarh starts at ₹12,499 per person (twin sharing, Deluxe, off-season). Flying to Delhi instead puts a 345 km drive in front of Shimla and costs more per person on the ground, so Delhi only makes sense if you are coming by the Rajdhani. There is no non-stop flight from Mumbai to Shimla, Manali (Kullu–Bhuntar) or Dharamshala. Below: the four ways from Mumbai, how your flight time decides the first day, the days off you need, and how Diwali, Christmas and the January snow fit our season dates.

Four ways from Mumbai to the start of your trip

Route Travel time How often Trip you join
Fly Mumbai → Chandigarh (BOM or Navi Mumbai NMI → IXC, non-stop) about 2 h 10 min – 2 h 40 min in the air IndiGo and Air India, around six non-stop flights a day between early morning and late evening Chandigarh start, from ₹12,499
Fly Mumbai → Delhi a little over 2 hours in the air many flights a day Delhi start, from ₹14,499
Mumbai Rajdhani to New Delhi (12951, from Mumbai Central) overnight, about 15½ hours, evening departure, morning arrival daily Delhi start, from ₹14,499
Through train to Chandigarh (22451 Bandra Terminus–Chandigarh Superfast) leaves Bandra Terminus around midday, reaches Chandigarh the next afternoon (about 27–28 hours) twice a week (Mondays and Thursdays) Chandigarh start, from ₹12,499

Flight and train timetables change, so check your airline or IRCTC before you book. Himachal’s own airports at Kangra (Dharamshala), Kullu–Bhuntar and Shimla are served only by small aircraft from Delhi and a few north Indian cities, and those flights are the first to be cancelled in bad weather. From Mumbai, a big-jet flight into Chandigarh and a car from there is the dependable way in. Our Chandigarh airport taxi can meet you at arrivals.

Your flight time decides the first day

We don’t drive into the hills after dark, and Manali is a full day’s drive from the plains. So the plan for your first day depends on when you land.

You land in Chandigarh What we do
Early morning to about midday Straight to Shimla (about 115 km, 3–3.5 hours). Day one is a full holiday day.
Afternoon Still Shimla the same evening in summer. In winter, when it is dark by about 5:30 pm, we may suggest a shorter first leg or a night in Chandigarh.
Evening or night A night in Chandigarh or Zirakpur, then Shimla after breakfast. The extra hotel night is added to your quote, or pick a morning flight and skip it.

The return works the same way in reverse. Manali to Chandigarh is 7–8 hours by road, so on the last day we leave Manali early and you should book an evening flight home, or plan the last night nearer Chandigarh.

How many days off you need from Mumbai

For a 5-night / 6-day trip Days away from home
Morning flight in, evening flight out, via Chandigarh 6 days
Late flight in (night in Chandigarh) 7 days
Fly to and from Delhi 6–7 days, with 7–8 hour drives on the first and last days
Rajdhani both ways about 8 days, with a night on the train each way
Through train to Chandigarh about 9–10 days, depending on which days the train runs

From ₹12,499 per person · twin sharing · Deluxe · off-season rate. Rates vary by season, group size and hotel category. These are sample rates, not live availability, so send us your dates and we’ll confirm what’s open. On these hotel trips, Super Deluxe is priced 18% above Deluxe and Luxury 35% above (so ₹14,749 and ₹16,874 on the Chandigarh Shimla–Manali trip). Premium is quoted on request. Flights and trains from Mumbai are not included.

Chandigarh or Delhi start: the cost difference. The same Shimla–Manali circuit is ₹12,499 per person from Chandigarh and ₹14,499 from Delhi. The Delhi rate already assumes four people sharing the car, and the gap is the extra car time between Delhi and Chandigarh at each end. For a couple the per-person gap is larger, because the same extra car cost is split two ways. Mumbai–Chandigarh and Mumbai–Delhi air fares move around day to day, so compare both on your dates; for most travellers from Mumbai the Chandigarh start works out cheaper overall and saves a long drive on each end. Every Chandigarh-start trip, including Kinnaur and Spiti, is on our Himachal tour package from Chandigarh page.

Mumbai holidays and our season dates

Off-season (the rates shown above): 1 July – 30 September, 1 November – 19 December, and 6 January – 14 March.
Peak season (25% above the off-season rate): 15 March – 30 June, the whole of October, and 20 December – 5 January.

  • Diwali 2026 (Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November, Bhaubeej on 11 November): the whole Diwali week falls in our off-season, so a Diwali trip is charged at the rates above. Expect cold nights and the first snow on the high passes. See our Diwali holidays in Himachal guide and Manali in November before you pack.
  • Christmas and New Year: 20 December – 5 January is peak, and flights out of Mumbai fill early. Our Christmas and New Year in Manali page covers the two long weekends and the snow odds.
  • The snow months, January and February: this is when Mumbai searches for Manali trips are highest, and from 6 January it is off-season again. Heavy snow in Manali town is likelier in January and February than at Christmas. Read Manali in January for what to expect.
  • Summer holidays (May–June): peak season. Book flights and hotels together, well ahead.

From the coast to the cold: what Mumbai travellers often miss

  • Warm clothes: Manali nights are close to freezing from November to February, and well below at Sissu. A padded jacket, thermals, a woollen cap and gloves are essential, not optional. Snow boots and suits can be rented on the snow day.
  • Altitude, gently: Shimla and Manali are around 2,000 m, which most people manage without trouble. Going higher, to Spiti or Lahaul, needs a slower plan. Our Himachal tour package for family page covers drive times and altitude for children and elderly travellers.
  • Winding roads: if anyone gets car-sick, tell us. We plan breaks, and front seats help.
  • Snow day plans: in winter, the snow day from Manali goes through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, not over Rohtang, which is closed for winter. Check our Rohtang permit and road status page before you travel.
