Road tips for Chandigarh to Dharamshala
Leave by 7 am
Start early to clear Kharar before office traffic and finish the Dehra–Kangra hill stretch in daylight. If your flight lands at IXC after about 2 pm, we suggest a night in Chandigarh and a morning start.
Himachal entry fee
Cars registered outside Himachal pay an entry fee at the state barrier (₹100 a day for passenger vehicles up to 12 seats in 2026–27; commercial and larger vehicles pay more). It is added to your quote at actuals. Details: Himachal entry tax & permits 2026.
Roadworks on NH503
NHAI is four-laning NH503 between Mehatpur, Una, Amb and Ranital, with a new Dehra–Dharamshala alignment and tunnels near Tarsuh (Tribune, June 2026). Until it all opens, expect single-lane work zones near Una and Kangra; the drive time on this page already allows for them.
Temple stops on the way
Anandpur Sahib, Chintpurni, Jawalamukhi and Kangra’s Brajeshwari Devi all sit on or just off this road. Tell us which ones when you book — a short darshan stop is part of the one-way fare; a longer detour is quoted upfront.
McLeodganj drops
Upper Dharamshala runs on a one-way loop and the lanes to Bhagsu and Dharamkot are steep and narrow. Share your hotel name; we plan the closest drop point. The Dharamshala Skyway ropeway also links lower Dharamshala with McLeodganj.
Monsoon caution
Mid-July to August brings landslides on hill highways. We watch road advisories and move your start time or route when needed — no extra charge for a route change we suggest.

Questions travellers ask
What is the taxi fare from Chandigarh to Dharamshala?
One-way fares start around ₹3,499 for a hatchback, ₹3,999 for a sedan, ₹5,099 for an Ertiga, ₹5,899 for a Kia Carens and ₹6,899 for an Innova Crysta. A 12-seater Tempo Traveller starts around ₹13,499. Tolls, parking and the Himachal entry fee are extra at actuals; peak dates cost more.
How far is Dharamshala from Chandigarh by road?
About 240 km via Ropar, Kiratpur Sahib, Una and Kangra on NH503 — roughly 5.5 to 6.5 hours with a meal stop. McLeodganj is about 10 km above Dharamshala.
Which is the best route from Chandigarh to Dharamshala?
Kharar, Kurali and Ropar to Kiratpur Sahib, then NH503 via Anandpur Sahib, Nangal, Una, Amb, Dehra, Ranital and Kangra. It is the shortest and most used road; the driver may switch to a parallel road near Una or Kangra if a work zone is jammed that day.
Can you pick me up at Chandigarh airport or railway station?
Yes. The driver waits at IXC arrivals or outside Chandigarh railway station with your name, or picks you up from ISBT-43, ISBT-17 or any address in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur. Share the flight or train number and we track delays.
Does the fare include a drop at McLeodganj?
Yes. McLeodganj, Bhagsu, Dharamkot and Naddi are 10–12 km above lower Dharamshala and the same one-way fare covers a drop there. Very narrow lanes may mean a short walk for the last few hundred metres.
Is the Dharamshala to Chandigarh taxi fare the same?
Yes. The same one-way fares apply from Dharamshala, McLeodganj or Gaggal (Kangra) airport to Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Zirakpur, IXC airport or the railway station. Leave by 9 am to reach the Tricity before dark.
Can we visit Chintpurni or Jawalamukhi on the way?
Yes. Chintpurni is a short detour from Mubarikpur and Jawalamukhi from Dehra. A quick darshan stop fits in the one-way fare; tell us when you book so the driver plans the timing, and we quote any longer detour upfront.
Do you do Chandigarh–Dharamshala round trips?
Yes. Round trips are billed per kilometre driven (sedan ₹12/km, 250 km daily minimum) plus ₹400 a night driver allowance. A 3-day Chandigarh–Dharamshala–McLeodganj–Chandigarh trip in a sedan starts around ₹9,799.
