Road tips for Delhi to Dharamshala
No night driving in the hills
For safety our drivers do not run hill sections late at night. Leave early (5–6 am from Delhi) and plan to reach before dark; the quote tells you the best start time.
Himachal entry fee
Cars registered outside Himachal pay an entry fee at the state barrier (₹100 a day for passenger vehicles up to 12 seats in 2026–27; commercial and larger vehicles pay more). It is added to your quote at actuals. Details: Himachal entry tax & permits 2026.
Roadworks on NH503
NHAI is four-laning NH503 between Mehatpur, Una, Amb and Ranital, with a new Dehra–Dharamshala alignment and tunnels near Tarsuh (Tribune, June 2026). Until all of it opens, expect single-lane work zones near Una and Kangra — another reason to start early.
McLeodganj drops
Upper Dharamshala runs on a one-way loop and the lanes to Bhagsu and Dharamkot are steep and narrow. Share your hotel name when you book; we plan the closest drop point, and the Dharamshala Skyway ropeway links lower Dharamshala with McLeodganj.
Add Bir, Palampur or Dalhousie
Bir (about 70 km) and Palampur (about 34 km) lie east of Dharamshala, Dalhousie about 118 km north-west. A Delhi–Dharamshala–Bir or Dalhousie loop in one car, billed per kilometre, usually costs less than separate drops — see our Dharamshala taxi service.
Monsoon caution
Mid-July to August brings landslides on hill highways. We watch road advisories and move your start time or route when needed — no extra charge for a route change we suggest.

Questions travellers ask
What is the taxi fare from Delhi to Dharamshala?
One-way fares start around ₹6,199 for a hatchback, ₹7,199 for a sedan, ₹9,099 for an Ertiga, ₹10,499 for a Kia Carens and ₹12,399 for an Innova Crysta. A 12-seater Tempo Traveller starts around ₹24,299. Tolls, parking and the Himachal entry fee are extra at actuals; peak dates cost more.
How long does Delhi to Dharamshala take by car?
About 9–10 hours for roughly 475 km, with breakfast and lunch stops. Leave Delhi by 5 am to reach Dharamshala in the afternoon and finish the hill stretch in daylight.
Which is the best road route from Delhi to Dharamshala?
NH44 from Delhi to Ambala, round Chandigarh to Ropar and Kiratpur Sahib, then NH503 via Anandpur Sahib, Nangal, Una, Amb, Dehra, Ranital and Kangra. The other way, via Jalandhar and Pathankot, is longer for most of Delhi; our driver picks the faster one on the day.
Does the fare include drop at McLeodganj?
Yes. McLeodganj, Bhagsu, Dharamkot and Naddi are 10–12 km above lower Dharamshala and the same one-way fare covers a drop there. Very narrow lanes may mean a short walk or a local taxi for the last few hundred metres.
Is the Dharamshala to Delhi taxi fare the same?
Yes. The same one-way fares apply from Dharamshala, McLeodganj or Gaggal (Kangra) airport to anywhere in Delhi NCR, including IGI Airport. Start by 7 am to reach Delhi by evening.
Taxi or overnight Volvo bus to Dharamshala?
The overnight Volvo is the cheapest single seat. A taxi suits families, 3–4 friends sharing the fare, seniors, heavy luggage, a daytime drive with temple stops, or a drop right at a McLeodganj hotel.
Do you do Delhi–Dharamshala round trips?
Yes. Round trips are billed per kilometre driven (sedan ₹12/km, 250 km daily minimum) plus ₹400 a night driver allowance. A 4-day Delhi–Dharamshala–McLeodganj–Delhi trip in a sedan starts around ₹13,199, less than two one-way drops.
Which car is best for Delhi to Dharamshala?
A sedan for 2–3 people with light bags; an Ertiga or Innova Crysta for families, seniors or 5–7 people; a Tempo Traveller for groups of 8 or more.
