Short answer: Dharamshala in December is cool, dry and clear. IMD normals give days of about 18°C and nights near 7°C in lower Dharamshala, with only two rainy days in the month; McLeod Ganj, some 550 m higher, runs 3–4°C colder and can touch freezing. The Dhauladhar peaks behind town are white, but snow in McLeod Ganj itself is occasional, not something to plan around. Everything in town is open.

Quick answer (checked 24 October 2026)

  • Weather: lower Dharamshala averages 18.4°C by day and 7.1°C at night in December (IMD 1991–2020 normals). McLeod Ganj and Naddi are colder; pack for 0–3°C after dark.
  • Rain and snow: about 37 mm of rain on roughly 2 days. Snow sits on the Dhauladhar all month; snow on the town is possible in a late-December western disturbance but more likely in January–February.
  • What’s open: the Dalai Lama temple complex, monasteries, Bhagsu, Naddi, Norbulingka, the Kangra temples and the cricket stadium viewpoint. Triund is open as a day hike in dry spells; going higher is restricted in winter.
  • Crowds: quiet until about 20 December, then busy for Christmas and New Year (25–27 December and 1–3 January are long weekends in 2026–27).
  • How long: 3 nights for Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj; 5 nights with Dalhousie and Khajjiar.

What is the weather like in Dharamshala in December?

December is one of the driest months in the Kangra valley. The India Meteorological Department’s 1991–2020 normals for Dharamshala give a mean maximum of 18.4°C, a mean minimum of 7.1°C, 36.6 mm of rain and 2.2 rainy days. The lowest temperature on record for the month is −1.0°C. Skies are usually clear, which is why December gives the sharpest views of the Dhauladhar wall rising more than 4,000 m straight behind the town.

Those numbers are for the lower town. Dharamshala is spread over a steep slope: the bus stand and main bazaar sit at about 1,450 m, while McLeod Ganj, the Tibetan town 9 km up the road, is at about 2,000 m. As a rule of thumb that is 3–4°C colder, so expect McLeod Ganj nights of 1–4°C and the odd frost. Naddi and Dharamkot, a little higher again, are colder still. Mornings are bright and pleasant in a fleece; the cold arrives quickly once the sun drops behind the ridge, around 5 pm.

November, December or January: how do they compare?

Month Day / night (lower town) Rain Snow chance in McLeod Ganj Best for
November 22.0°C / 10.2°C 19 mm, ~1 day Very low Triund overnight, clear trekking days
December 18.4°C / 7.1°C 37 mm, ~2 days Low to occasional Quiet sightseeing, snow views, Christmas in McLeod Ganj
January 16.0°C / 5.9°C 84 mm, ~4–5 days Highest of the year Snow in Naddi and Dharamkot, if you are flexible

Does it snow in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj in December?

The mountains, yes; the towns, only sometimes. The Dhauladhar picks up its first snow in autumn (fresh snow was reported on the range on 5 October 2025, The Tribune) and stays white through December. Snow in the towns needs a strong western disturbance. When one arrives it usually whitens the upper settlements first: on 21 January 2020, for example, Naddi, Dharamkot, Upper Bhagsu and McLeod Ganj got the season’s heaviest snow while lower Dharamshala only had rain (The Tribune, 22 January 2020).

So treat December snow in McLeod Ganj as a bonus. If seeing snow is the main reason for the trip, plan for January–February instead, or keep a flexible day and drive to where it has fallen. In Himachal, Manali’s Solang and Sissu are far more reliable in December; see our Manali in December guide.

For live conditions, follow the IMD Shimla centre’s district bulletin for Kangra a few days before you travel. A yellow or orange alert for snow means roads above McLeod Ganj (Naddi, Dharamkot) can be blocked for a day.

What can you do in Dharamshala in December?

  • Tsuglagkhang complex (Main Tibetan Temple and Namgyal Monastery): free entry, open daily. Afternoon monk debates in the courtyard are the highlight. Walk the Lingkhor kora path below it in about 30 minutes.
  • Bhagsunag temple and waterfall: a 2 km walk from McLeod Ganj. The fall is thin in winter but the walk is easy and sunny.
  • Naddi sunset point: about 3 km past Dal Lake; the best place to watch the Dhauladhar turn pink. St John in the Wilderness, an 1852 church in deodar forest, is on the way.
  • Tibet Museum and Norbulingka Institute: the museum (₹20) is closed on Saturdays; Norbulingka’s workshops and gardens near Sidhpur make a good half-day by car.
  • Kangra temples: Chamunda Devi is about 15 km from Dharamshala and Kangra’s Brajeshwari Devi about 20 km. See our Kangra Devi temple guide and Chamunda Devi page for darshan timings.
  • Paragliding at Indrunag: short tandem flights above Dharamshala run on clear winter days; check our paragliding in Dharamshala page for the season and safety rules.
  • Christmas in McLeod Ganj: cafés along Jogiwara Road and Bhagsu Road do Christmas and New Year menus, and the town is livelier than Shimla’s crowded Mall in the same week.

One thing not to count on: a public appearance by the Dalai Lama. When we checked dalailama.com on 24 October 2026, the 2026 schedule listed nothing after the Long Life Offering ceremony of 21 October. Teachings are announced only on that site, so check it again before you travel.

Can you do the Triund trek in December?

Yes, as a day hike in settled weather, with care. Triund is a ridge at about 2,850 m, roughly 9 km from McLeod Ganj via the Gallu Devi check post above Dharamkot, where you register with ID and pay the forest entry fee. In December the upper switchbacks can be icy in the morning and the ridge is windy and well below freezing at night, so most people go up and come back the same day.

Going beyond Triund is a different matter. The Kangra administration has restricted trekking above 3,000 m in winter after fresh snow on the Dhauladhar, aimed at stopping people heading to Snowline and Indrahar Pass (The Tribune, 31 December 2022). Our adventure team checks the current order and runs guided winter options only where permission allows; route details and dates are on the Triund trek page.

How do you reach Dharamshala in December?

By air: Kangra airport at Gaggal (DHM) is 13 km from Dharamshala and 20 km from McLeod Ganj, with IndiGo and SpiceJet flights from Delhi of about 1 h 20–1 h 40 min. December fog in Delhi delays morning departures, so do not plan a tight onward connection on the day you fly back.

By bus: HRTC’s Himsuta Volvo leaves ISBT Kashmere Gate at 08:30 and 20:50 and takes 11–12 hours (₹1,501–1,558 on AbhiBus listings checked 23 October 2026). The overnight run is cold; carry a jacket on board.

By train: there is no broad-gauge line to Dharamshala. The 12425 Jammu Rajdhani reaches Pathankot Cantt at 03:10 after leaving New Delhi at 20:40; Dharamshala is 90 km and 2.5–3 hours on from there. Pre-book a Pathankot to Dharamshala taxi so you are not bargaining in the dark.

By road: about 480 km from Delhi via Chandigarh and Una, 9–11 hours. The Kangra roads are snow-free in a normal December; only the stretch above McLeod Ganj (Naddi, Dharamkot) closes after a heavy fall. International visitors will find more detail in our Delhi to Dharamshala guide.

What should you pack for December?

  • A down or padded jacket, a fleece, a warm cap and gloves for evenings in McLeod Ganj.
  • Thermal inner layers if you are staying in Dharamkot or Naddi, or doing Triund.
  • Trekking shoes with grip; the steep lanes of McLeod Ganj are slippery when frost melts.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen: the December sun at 2,000 m is strong even when the air is cold.
  • Ask your hotel whether rooms have heaters or an electric blanket; many budget guesthouses do not, and it matters more than the hotel’s star rating.

A sample 4-day December plan

Day Plan
Day 1 Arrive by the morning flight or overnight bus. Afternoon at the Tsuglagkhang complex and the Lingkhor walk; sunset at Naddi.
Day 2 Triund day hike if the forecast is dry (start by 8 am, down by 4 pm). If not, Bhagsu, Dharamkot and a café afternoon.
Day 3 Car day: Norbulingka, Chamunda Devi and Kangra Fort or Brajeshwari Devi; back via the cricket stadium viewpoint.
Day 4 Depart, or continue 4–5 hours to Dalhousie and Khajjiar for two more nights (see our Dalhousie–Khajjiar guide).

Which Suzu packages cover Dharamshala in December?

All three run in December, with a private car and driver throughout. Prices are the “from” prices per person on the live package pages on 24 October 2026; Christmas–New Year dates cost more, so ask for a dated quote.

More options, including Shakti Peeth temple circuits, are on our Dharamshala tour packages page. Comparing December destinations? Our best places to visit in December in India guide sets Dharamshala against Manali, Shimla, Kashmir, Goa and Rajasthan.

Frequently asked questions

Is December a good time to visit Dharamshala?

Yes, if you like cool, clear weather and fewer people. December is one of the driest months (about 2 rainy days), mountain views are at their sharpest and hotels are quieter until about 20 December. The trade-offs are cold evenings in McLeod Ganj and a low chance of snow in town.

What is the temperature in Dharamshala in December?

Lower Dharamshala averages 18.4°C by day and 7.1°C at night (IMD 1991–2020 normals), with a record low of −1.0°C. McLeod Ganj, about 550 m higher, is roughly 3–4°C colder, so nights there are often between 1°C and 4°C.

Will I see snow in McLeod Ganj in December?

You will see snow on the Dhauladhar peaks behind town every day. Snow in McLeod Ganj itself is occasional in December and more likely in January and February, usually reaching Naddi, Dharamkot and Upper Bhagsu first. For near-certain December snow in Himachal, go to Solang or Sissu near Manali.

Is Triund open in December?

The Triund ridge (about 2,850 m) is normally walkable as a day hike in dry weather, with registration at the Gallu Devi check post. Trekking above 3,000 m, towards Snowline and Indrahar Pass, has been restricted by the Kangra administration in winter after fresh snow. Check the current order before you go.

Are flights to Dharamshala reliable in December?

Mostly, but plan a buffer. Gaggal is a small valley airport, and December–January fog in Delhi delays or cancels some morning flights. Avoid same-day connections to long-haul or important flights out of Delhi; the overnight Volvo or a private car are good fallbacks.

How many days do I need in Dharamshala in December?

Three nights covers McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu, Naddi, the Triund day hike and a Kangra temple day. Five nights lets you add Dalhousie and Khajjiar, which pair naturally with Dharamshala and are similar in December weather.
