Short answer: Chandigarh to Shimla is about 115 km and 3–3.5 hours by car on NH-5 via Parwanoo and Solan. A private car with driver is the simplest option for international travellers. The famous Kalka–Shimla toy train is only running between Dharampur and Shimla until at least 30 November 2026, because a monsoon landslide near Parwanoo cut the lower line; you can still do it by driving to Dharampur and riding the upper 50 km. HRTC buses run every hour or so from about ₹270 (US$2.80).
Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)
- Best overall: private car with driver, 3–3.5 hours door to door, straight from Chandigarh airport or your hotel.
- Heritage option: car to Dharampur (about 65 km, 1.5 hours), then the narrow-gauge toy train to Shimla (about 50 km, 2.5–3 hours), while the Kalka–Dharampur section is shut (Northern Railway, until 30 Nov 2026).
- Cheapest: HRTC buses from Chandigarh ISBT-43, roughly 03:00 to 20:20, ordinary from about ₹270, AC Volvo and electric coaches from about ₹469 (AbhiBus listing, Jan 2026; checked 30 Oct 2026), about 4 hours.
- Route: Chandigarh → Zirakpur → Panchkula → Parwanoo (Himachal border) → Dharampur → Solan → Kandaghat → Shoghi → Shimla.
- Watch out for: fog on the plains in December–January mornings, monsoon landslides July–mid-September, and the no-car rule on Shimla’s Mall and Ridge.
- Package: Shimla Manali from Chandigarh 5N/6D ₹12,499 per person (about US$132) in the off-season band, transfers included.

How far is Shimla from Chandigarh, and how long does it take?
Shimla is about 115 km north-east of Chandigarh by road, and the drive takes 3–3.5 hours in normal traffic. The first 30 km across the plain to Parwanoo are flat and fast; the remaining 85 km climb from about 400 m to Shimla’s 2,200 m on NH-5, the old Hindustan–Tibet road, now four-lane as far as Solan and partly beyond. It is the shortest and easiest of the big Himachal approaches, which is why so many of our guests fly or take the train to Chandigarh rather than driving all the way from Delhi (about 350 km and 7–8 hours; see our Delhi to Shimla guide).
The time that matters is at the ends. Getting out of Chandigarh through Zirakpur can take 30–45 minutes in the morning rush, and the last 10 km into Shimla slows on weekends and in the May–June and Christmas peaks. Leave Chandigarh by 08:00 and you will be on the Mall for lunch. Exchange rates here use about ₹95 to the US dollar (October 2026); treat dollar figures as approximate.

Is a private car the best way from Chandigarh to Shimla?
For most international visitors, yes. The drive is short enough that the bus saves little time and the car saves a lot of hassle: pick-up at the airport or railway station, bags in the boot, a tea stop at Parwanoo or Solan, and delivery to the car park nearest your hotel. The same car can take you to Kufri or Narkanda the next day. Our Chandigarh to Shimla taxi page lists the vehicles and inclusions, and the Chandigarh airport taxi page covers meet-and-greet at arrivals. A sedan suits two people; an SUV is better for three or more or in winter (see sedan vs SUV vs Tempo Traveller).
One thing to know before you arrive: Shimla’s Mall and Ridge are closed to cars, and most central hotels are a walk or a lift ride from the nearest drop point. Our driver will take you to the closest permitted point (the lift near the Mall, the Victory Tunnel car park, or your hotel’s own access road if it has one); porters are available at the main car parks for a small fee. Pack light or pick a hotel with vehicle access if that matters.
Can you still take the Kalka–Shimla toy train?
Partly, and it is still worth doing. The Kalka–Shimla Railway, a 96 km narrow-gauge line with 102 tunnels and over 800 bridges, opened in 1903 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Heavy monsoon rain in 2026 caused a landslide near Parwanoo that washed out track support on the lowest section, and Northern Railway suspended trains between Kalka and Dharampur; the Dharampur–Shimla section was inspected, found stable and reopened in early September (Nomad Lawyer status report, 8 Sep 2026; checked 30 Oct 2026). The lower section is to stay shut until 30 November 2026 while the slope is stabilised, and full service will resume only after the repair is certified. Our toy train status page is updated when Northern Railway changes the arrangement.
The workaround is simple. We drive you from Chandigarh to Dharampur (about 65 km, 1.5 hours; it is on the Shimla road anyway), you board the train there, and the car carries your luggage on to Shimla. The Dharampur–Shimla section is the better half of the line: the Barog tunnel (the longest on the route, about 1.1 km) is just above Dharampur, and the climb through Solan, Kandaghat, the Tara Devi loop and Jutogh into Shimla has the big views. Allow 2.5–3 hours. When the full line reopens, the classic plan is the Himalayan Queen or Shivalik Deluxe Express from Kalka (about 5 hours) up and the car back down; our Kalka to Shimla taxi page covers the road option from Kalka.
Booking: narrow-gauge seats are sold on the IRCTC site and app like any other train, with chair-car and first-class options on the better services; foreign tourists can register with an overseas mobile number. In October–December and April–June, book two to three weeks ahead. Our guide to Indian train classes explains the ticket types.
What is the HRTC bus from Chandigarh to Shimla like?
Frequent and cheap. Himachal’s state operator runs well over 30 services a day from Chandigarh ISBT Sector 43, from about 03:00 to 20:20, in everything from ordinary 3+2 non-AC buses (from about ₹270, US$2.80) to Volvo and Scania coaches and new electric AC buses (from about ₹469, US$4.90), taking roughly 4 hours (AbhiBus HRTC listing, checked 30 Oct 2026). Many services continue beyond Shimla or start elsewhere (some Volvos come via Dehradun), so check the origin and the route.
The catch for visitors is the ends: ISBT-43 is 10 km from the airport, and buses arrive at Shimla’s Tutikandi ISBT, 3–4 km below the Mall, from where you need a local taxi or the city bus to the lift. For a solo traveller with a backpack it is a good deal; for a couple with suitcases the car wins.
What is the drive like, and where can you stop?
The road passes through three distinct zones. The plain from Chandigarh through Zirakpur and Panchkula to Kalka is flat, busy and unremarkable; Pinjore Gardens, a 17th-century Mughal terraced garden just before Kalka, is a pleasant 30-minute stop if you leave early. At Parwanoo you cross into Himachal (taxis pay a small entry tax here, which the driver handles) and the climb begins; the Timber Trail cable car above the town goes up to a hilltop resort and is popular with Indian families.
The middle section from Parwanoo through Dharampur to Solan (about 70 km from Chandigarh) is four-lane with long views back over the plain; Solan has the Mohan Meakin brewery (one of Asia’s oldest, 1855, not generally open to visitors) and good dhabas for lunch. Above Solan the road narrows through Kandaghat, where the road to Chail branches off, and climbs through pine and deodar past Shoghi into Shimla. The last stretch is being four-laned and has sections of roadworks. Mountain views open up only in the final 15 km, so do not worry if the first two hours feel ordinary.
| Point | Approx. km from Chandigarh | Approx. time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pinjore Gardens | 22 | 40 min | Mughal garden; small entry fee; early-morning stop |
| Kalka | 30 | 50 min | Toy train terminus (lower section shut till 30 Nov 2026) |
| Parwanoo | 35 | 1 h | Himachal border; Timber Trail cable car |
| Dharampur | 65 | 1.5 h | Board the toy train here for Shimla |
| Solan | 70 | 1 h 45 min | Lunch stop; about 1,500 m |
| Kandaghat | 85 | 2 h 15 min | Turn-off for Chail (about 30 km) |
| Shimla (Victory Tunnel / lift) | 115 | 3–3.5 h | Cars stop below the Mall |
When is the best time to make the trip?
The road is open all year. October to November and March to June are the easiest months, dry with clear views from Shoghi onwards. In December and January, fog on the Chandigarh plain can slow the first hour until mid-morning, and snow in Shimla itself (two or three falls a season, usually late December to February) occasionally closes the last few kilometres for a morning; the toy train, when running, is the one form of transport that shrugs off snow. July to mid-September is the monsoon, when landslides on the Parwanoo–Solan stretch can hold traffic for hours; it was monsoon rain that cut the railway in 2026. We still run the route in those months, with the driver checking the road each morning. For what each month is like once you arrive, see best time to visit Shimla.
How does this fit a wider trip?
Chandigarh to Shimla is usually the first leg of a Himachal circuit. The classic is Chandigarh → Shimla (2 nights) → Manali (3 nights) → Chandigarh, our Shimla Manali from Chandigarh 5N/6D package at ₹12,499 per person (about US$132) in the off-season band (1 Nov–19 Dec and 6 Jan–14 Mar; peak dates about 25% higher). The Shimla–Manali leg is a 7–8 hour drive covered in our Shimla to Manali guide, and if you are going straight to Manali instead, see Chandigarh to Manali. For what to do on arrival, our Shimla guide for international travellers and things to do in Shimla cover the Viceregal Lodge, Jakhu and the day trips, and our Chandigarh travel guide is useful if you have a day in the city first.
Booking: a 20% token confirms a Himachal package, with a full refund if you cancel within 48 hours of paying, and the balance is due before the trip. International cards are accepted via Razorpay and PayPal.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Shimla from Chandigarh?
About 115 km by road on NH-5 via Parwanoo, Dharampur and Solan, which takes 3–3.5 hours by car in normal traffic and about 4 hours by HRTC bus. The road climbs from roughly 400 m on the plain to about 2,200 m at Shimla, with the mountain views opening up in the last 15 km after Shoghi.
Is the Kalka–Shimla toy train running in 2026?
Only between Dharampur and Shimla. A monsoon landslide near Parwanoo cut the Kalka–Dharampur section, which Northern Railway has kept closed until 30 November 2026 while the slope is repaired. We drive guests to Dharampur, about 1.5 hours from Chandigarh, and they ride the upper 50 km to Shimla in 2.5–3 hours.
What is the cheapest way from Chandigarh to Shimla?
An HRTC bus from Chandigarh ISBT Sector 43. Ordinary buses start around ₹270 and AC Volvo or electric coaches around ₹469, with departures through the day from about 03:00 to 20:20 and a journey of roughly 4 hours. Buses arrive at Shimla’s Tutikandi bus station, 3–4 km below the Mall, so add a local taxi.
Can you drive from Chandigarh airport straight to Shimla?
Yes. Our driver meets you at arrivals and the drive is 3–3.5 hours, so a morning landing puts you on the Mall by early afternoon. Cars cannot enter the Mall or Ridge, so the driver drops you at the nearest permitted point, usually the lift or a car park a few minutes’ walk from central hotels.
Is the Chandigarh–Shimla road open in winter?
Yes. It is a national highway kept open all year. Fog on the plain can slow the first hour in December and January, and snow in Shimla occasionally closes the last few kilometres for a morning until it is cleared. Leave Chandigarh after 09:00 on foggy days and use an SUV if you are travelling between late December and February.
Should I take the toy train up or down?
Up. The climb from Dharampur through the Barog tunnel, Solan and the Tara Devi loop faces the views, and arriving by rail into Shimla station is part of the experience. Let the car carry your luggage and take the train with a day bag. When the Kalka section reopens, the full five-hour ride from Kalka is the one to book.
