Why combine Udaipur and Mount Abu?
They are three hours apart and complement each other. Udaipur is palaces, lakes and crowds; Mount Abu, at about 1,200 m on a granite plateau in the Aravallis, is cool air, a lake you can pedal across, Jain temples carved so finely they look like lace, and a sunset point where half of Gujarat seems to gather on a Saturday. Udaipur is best in the morning and evening; Mount Abu fills the hot middle of the day without complaint.
The pairing also solves a seasonal problem. Between March and June, when the desert cities are too hot to enjoy, Udaipur is still manageable with early starts and Mount Abu is positively pleasant, which is why Gujarati families have made it their summer retreat for a century. In the monsoon the drive between them through the green Aravallis is one of the prettier roads in Rajasthan. Our best time to visit Rajasthan guide has the month-by-month picture.
The 4-day Udaipur Mount Abu itinerary
| Day | Where | Plan | Travel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Udaipur | Arrive 07:30 by Mewar Express. City Palace Museum (₹300 Indian adult), Jagdish temple, lunch at a Lal Ghat rooftop, Lake Pichola boat to Jag Mandir, Gangaur Ghat, 19:00 Dharohar dance show at Bagore ki Haveli (₹90). | Overnight train from Delhi, or flight to Dabok (22 km) |
| Day 2 | Udaipur | Saheliyon ki Bari, Fateh Sagar and Moti Magri, Shilpgram, Eklingji (22 km; check darshan slots), sunset at Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace, dinner at Ambrai Ghat. | Local car, about 70 km |
| Day 3 | Udaipur → Mount Abu | Leave 08:00, reach Mount Abu by 11:30. Check in, lunch, Dilwara temples from 12:00 (free, no cameras), Nakki Lake pedal boat and Toad Rock, Sunset Point by 17:30, evening in the market. | About 160–165 km, 3 h on NH27 |
| Day 4 | Mount Abu → departure | Guru Shikhar at opening (about 15 km, highest point in Rajasthan at 1,722 m), Achalgarh fort and temple on the way back, Brahma Kumaris Peace Park if time. Drive to Abu Road for an afternoon or evening train, or back to Udaipur (3 h) for a flight. | Abu Road about 28 km downhill, 45–60 min |
Fees are from EaseIndiaTrip (City Palace, updated December 2025), Swagachi (Dharohar show) and Incredible India (Dilwara), all checked 30 October 2026. The Mount Abu municipality charges a small per-head and per-vehicle entry toll at the checkpost on the way up; it is a few tens of rupees per person and changes periodically, so have cash ready. Our Udaipur tourist places and Mount Abu tourist places guides list every stop in detail.
The 5-day Udaipur Mount Abu itinerary
With a fifth day, the usual choice is to insert the Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur day between the two Udaipur days and the drive to Mount Abu. Leave Udaipur at 07:00, reach Kumbhalgarh (about 85 km) by 09:00 for the fort and its 36 km wall (₹40 Indian, 09:00–18:00), drive on to Ranakpur for lunch and the Jain temple after its noon opening for tourists, and return to Udaipur by 18:00; the loop is about 210–230 km (TravelCoffee day-trip guide and CaptureATrip, checked 30 October 2026). Our Udaipur 3-day plan has the hour-by-hour table for this day.
A smarter variant for the 5-day plan is to drive Udaipur → Kumbhalgarh → Ranakpur → Mount Abu on Day 3 instead of returning to Udaipur: Ranakpur to Mount Abu is roughly 160 km via Sirohi and Pindwara, about 3.5 hours, so you arrive for dinner. That leaves two full nights at Mount Abu, with Day 4 for Dilwara, Nakki Lake and Sunset Point and Day 5 for Guru Shikhar, Achalgarh, the Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary (a drive-through or a short trek; sloth bears are the draw at dusk) and Trevor’s Tank before the descent to Abu Road. The second version has more driving on Day 3 but a more relaxed hill-station stay, and it is how we build the 5-day version of our package when guests are leaving from Abu Road or Ahmedabad.
How do you get between Udaipur and Mount Abu?
| Option | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Private car with driver | About 3 h, 160–165 km | NH27 via Gogunda, Pindwara and Abu Road, then the 28 km ghat climb. Stops possible at the West Banas dam viewpoint and the Pratap Gaurav Kendra outside Udaipur |
| RSRTC and private bus | About 4–5 h | Several daily from Udaipur’s Udiapole stand to Mount Abu or Abu Road; cheapest option, limited luggage space |
| Train to Abu Road + taxi | About 2.5–3 h train + 1 h taxi | Udaipur City–Abu Road trains are few and poorly timed; the bus or car is usually better. Abu Road is on the Delhi–Ahmedabad trunk line, so it is the exit, not the link |
| Shared taxi from Abu Road to Mount Abu | About 45–60 min | Jeeps and taxis wait outside the station; agree the fare before leaving |
The 160 km figure is from Savaari’s route guide and Abu Road’s 28 km distance from Incredible India, both checked 30 October 2026; Google Maps shows about 165 km depending on the Udaipur start point. The road is good, two-lane for most of the way, with the only slow section the final hairpins up to the plateau. In the monsoon, waterfalls appear beside the ghat road and fog can slow the climb.
What should you know about Mount Abu?
- Dilwara timings: Jain worshippers have the temples from early morning until noon; tourists are admitted from 12:00 until about 17:00–18:00. Entry is free. Cameras, phones and leather belts and bags are not allowed inside, and lockers are provided; dress with shoulders and knees covered (Incredible India, checked 30 October 2026). The Vimal Vasahi (1031) and Luna Vasahi (1230) temples are the two to spend time in.
- Guru Shikhar: about 15 km from the market, 1,722 m, with the Dattatreya temple at the top and a view over the plains; there is a short staircase from the car park. Go early, before the mist rises.
- Nakki Lake and Sunset Point: pedal and row boats on the lake, Toad Rock above it, and the Sunset Point 2 km west, which is thronged on weekends; a quieter alternative is Honeymoon Point (Anadra Point) nearby.
- Achalgarh: about 11 km north, a 15th-century Mewar fort with the Achaleshwar Mahadev temple and the Mandakini tank with its three stone buffaloes.
- Brahma Kumaris: the movement’s world headquarters is here; the Peace Park on the Guru Shikhar road is open to visitors and quiet.
- Weather: Mount Abu is 5–8°C cooler than Udaipur; winter nights can touch 5°C or lower, so carry warm layers from November to February even if Udaipur was mild.
When should you go, and what does the trip cost?
October to March is the main season for both towns, with November and February the most pleasant. Mount Abu is also busy and comfortable from April to June (about 30–33°C by day), when Udaipur needs early starts, and the monsoon (July–September) is green and quiet. Diwali (8 November 2026) and the Christmas–New Year week bring Gujarati holiday crowds to Mount Abu and push hotel rates up sharply; the Mount Abu Winter Festival is usually held around the last days of December. Avoid weekends at Mount Abu if you can, since Ahmedabad is only about 230 km away.
As a planning guide, two people sharing in three-star hotels with a private car for the 4-day plan spend about ₹14,000–₹20,000 per person in season, and ₹18,000–₹25,000 for the 5-day plan, excluding travel to Udaipur and from Abu Road; heritage hotels in Udaipur push it well above that. Entry fees for the whole trip are small, roughly ₹500–₹800 per person including the boat and the Dharohar show. Our Royal Udaipur and Mount Abu tour package is priced on request for your dates; a 20% token confirms and the balance is due before the trip. For the wider cost picture see our Rajasthan trip cost guide, and for other options our Rajasthan tour packages page and the shorter Udaipur 2 nights 3 days package.
Who is this trip for, and who should choose something else?
It suits couples, parents and families with young children: the drives are short, the altitude at Mount Abu is gentle, and there is a lake, a boat and a sunset at every stop. It is our usual suggestion for guests coming from Gujarat and Maharashtra, who can start at Abu Road or Udaipur and finish at the other end without backtracking. If you want forts and desert, the Jaipur–Jodhpur–Jaisalmer route in our Rajasthan 5-day plan is the better choice; if you want Udaipur with a night in the hills at Kumbhalgarh instead of Mount Abu, our Magnificent Udaipur and Kumbhalgarh tour does that. For general orientation on the lake city, our Udaipur travel guide is the place to start.
