Why go to Mount Abu?

Mount Abu sits on a granite plateau at the southern end of the Aravalli range, about 1,220 m above the Rajasthan plains, which makes it 8–10°C cooler than Udaipur or Ahmedabad in summer. The British used it as the summer headquarters of the Rajputana Agency, so the town has a colonial-era lake, a polo ground and bungalows with gardens. For Indian families it is three things: the Dilwara temples, the lake and sunset points, and a cool break from the heat.

Most visitors combine it with Udaipur, 165 km away; our Udaipur Mount Abu tour package guide explains the 4- and 5-day plans, and Udaipur tourist places covers the lake city. Gujarat visitors come up from Ahmedabad (about 225 km) and Palanpur (about 80 km).

What is special about the Dilwara temples?

1. Dilwara Jain temples. Five white marble temples built between the 11th and 16th centuries, 3 km from the lake. The two to study are Vimal Vasahi (1031, dedicated to Adinath) and Luna Vasahi (1230, Neminath), whose ceilings are carved into lotus pendants so thin they are translucent. The exterior is deliberately plain; the carving is all inside. Guides at the gate explain the panels for a small tip and are worth it.

Practical rules: the temples are open to Jain devotees from 6:00 and to tourists from about noon until 17:00 or 18:00 depending on season (Incredible India, checked 30 Oct 2026; local boards sometimes say 12:00–17:00, so arrive by 15:00 to be safe). Entry is free. Cameras, mobile phones and all leather items (belts, wallets, watch straps) must be left in the lockers outside, and shoulders and knees should be covered. Women are asked not to enter during menstruation, a rule posted at the gate.

What is there to do around Nakki Lake?

2. Nakki Lake. The centre of the town, said in legend to have been dug by the gods with their nails (nakh). Pedal and row boats run through the day for a few hundred rupees per half hour, and the lakeside market sells Gujarati snacks, Rajasthani handicrafts and the local sangri pickle. Evenings are busy and pleasant; mornings are quiet enough for a lap of the 2 km shore path.

3. Toad Rock. A granite boulder shaped like a toad about to jump into the lake, a 15-minute climb up steps from the shore. The view over the lake and town is the best in walking distance. Nun Rock and Camel Rock are other named boulders on the same hillside.

4. Sunset Point. A 2 km walk or a short drive south-west of the lake, with a terrace facing the plains. Hand-carts pushed by local men will take you the last few hundred metres for a fee; it is a Mount Abu tradition. Arrive an hour before sunset in season for a place at the rail. Honeymoon Point (Anadra Point), on the same road, has a quieter view of the same sunset.

5. Raghunath temple and Gandhi Park. A 14th-century Vishnu temple on the lake shore and a small park beside it; ten minutes each as you walk the lake.

Which sights are a drive from town?

6. Guru Shikhar. At 1,722 m the highest point between the Himalaya and the Nilgiris, 15 km north-east of town on a good road. A short flight of steps leads to the Dattatreya temple at the summit and a large bell; the view takes in the plateau, the plains and on clear winter mornings the Udaipur hills. Go early for clarity, and carry a jacket, since it is windy. The Mount Abu Observatory (infrared telescope) is nearby but closed to casual visitors.

7. Achalgarh. An 11 km drive, a 15th-century fort of Rana Kumbha (the same builder as Kumbhalgarh) on an older Paramara base. The Achaleshwar Mahadev temple at the foot has what is venerated as a toe-print of Shiva, a brass Nandi, and a tank with three stone buffaloes being shot by an archer. Climb through the fort gates to the Jain temples on top for the view. An hour with the drive.

8. Trevor’s Tank. A crocodile-breeding reservoir built by a British engineer, Colonel Trevor, 5 km from town inside the sanctuary. You pay an entry and vehicle fee at the barrier and drive down to a viewpoint; crocodiles bask on the far bank in the morning sun, and the woodland birdlife is good. Carry binoculars.

9. Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary. Declared in 1960 and covering about 290 sq km of the plateau, with sloth bear, leopard, sambar, wild boar and over 250 bird species. There are no fixed safari jeeps as in Ranthambore; instead, local guides lead walks from the Craig’s Path, Bailey’s Walk and Salgaon trails, and some operators run evening jeep drives. Sloth bears are seen fairly often at dusk on the roads outside town, which is a reason not to walk the outer roads after dark.

10. Adhar Devi temple. A cave temple of the goddess Arbuda, reached by about 365 steps cut into the hillside 3 km north of town. The shrine is in a natural fissure you stoop to enter. Navratri (October) draws big crowds; otherwise mornings are calm and the view from the top terrace is wide.

11. Brahma Kumaris: Peace Park and Universal Peace Hall. Mount Abu is the world headquarters of the Brahma Kumaris movement. The Universal Peace Hall (Om Shanti Bhawan) near the town centre and the landscaped Peace Park 8 km away on the Guru Shikhar road both welcome visitors for free guided tours and short meditation sessions. You do not need to be a follower to visit; the gardens are a peaceful 45 minutes.

12. Gaumukh temple. Around 700 steps lead down from the road 6 km south of town to a spring that pours from a marble cow’s mouth, beside a shrine to the sage Vashishtha, where by legend the Agnikula Rajput clans were created in a fire ceremony. The descent is easy; the climb back takes 20–30 minutes.

How should you plan one or two days in Mount Abu?

If you have one day: Guru Shikhar at 8:00, Achalgarh on the way back, Dilwara at 12:00 when tourists are admitted, lunch, Nakki Lake and Toad Rock at 15:30, Sunset Point by 17:00 (earlier in December), dinner at the lake market. If you have two days, spread the above over the first and add Trevor’s Tank, Adhar Devi, Peace Park and a sanctuary walk on the second.

Day Morning Afternoon Evening
1 Guru Shikhar, Achalgarh, Peace Park Dilwara temples from 12:00, lunch, Nakki Lake boating, Toad Rock Sunset Point, lake market dinner
2 Trevor’s Tank at opening, Adhar Devi steps Gaumukh or a guided sanctuary walk Honeymoon Point, Universal Peace Hall

Hotels cluster around the lake and on the Dilwara road. Well-known names include the heritage Palace Hotel (Bikaner House), Cama Rajputana Club Resort and Hotel Hillock; we mention these as examples, not as partners. Book early for Diwali (8 November 2026), the Christmas–New Year week and Gujarat school holidays in May.

When is the best time to visit, and how do you get there?

October to March is the main season, with days of 20–28°C and nights that drop to around 5°C in December and January; frost is possible on Guru Shikhar. The Winter Festival, run by Rajasthan Tourism with folk performances at the lake and a Nakki Lake boat race, is listed for 29–31 December 2026 (JustWravel events calendar, checked 30 Oct 2026; confirm with Rajasthan Tourism). Summer (April–June) is 30–34°C, which is why Gujarat and Rajasthan families fill the town in May. The monsoon turns the plateau green and misty but closes some viewpoints in heavy rain.

Abu Road station, on the Delhi–Ahmedabad–Mumbai trunk line, is 28 km and about 45 minutes below the town; most long-distance trains stop here, including the Delhi–Ahmedabad services. Taxis to Mount Abu cost a few hundred rupees per car and RSRTC buses run every hour or so. The nearest airport is Udaipur (about 176 km). By road, Udaipur is about 165 km (3 hours) via Pindwara and Ahmedabad about 225 km (4–5 hours). Inside the town, shared jeeps and taxis cover the Dilwara–Achalgarh–Guru Shikhar circuit; a car for the day is simplest for families. Note that non-Rajasthan vehicles pay a small toll at the town entry.
