What is not included: union taxis, ponies and the gondola
- Pahalgam: your Srinagar cab parks in town; Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari are visited in Pahalgam union vehicles. A 2026 guide put the three-valley circuit at roughly ₹1,500–2,200 per vehicle (approx., August 2026).
- Sonmarg: only union taxis go beyond town to Zero Point, Zoji La and Baltal; a rate card published in October 2026 shows about ₹2,400–4,500 per vehicle. Thajiwas Glacier is by foot or pony (about ₹700–1,500 per person, June 2026).
- Gulmarg: Srinagar taxis go up to Gulmarg itself. The gondola costs ₹750 for Phase 1 and ₹950 for Phase 2 per adult (JKTDC).
Srinagar to Gulmarg: what to know
The road leaves Srinagar westwards through Magam to Tangmarg, the last town before the climb, then winds up about 12 km of hairpins through pine forest to the Gulmarg bowl. Leave by 7:30–8 am if you have a morning gondola slot.
- Winter rule: after snowfall, the SDM Gulmarg’s advisory allows only 4×4 vehicles or vehicles with anti-skid chains on Tangmarg–Gulmarg; registered vendors fit chains in designated Tangmarg parking (₹600 a pair in the December 2024 advisory).
- Stops: Tangmarg for boot and coat hire in winter; Drung waterfall near Tangmarg (reopened in December 2025 after a security closure, Kashmir Observer).
- Cheaper option: bus or shared cab to Tangmarg, then a local taxi for the last stretch, about 3–4 hours in all.
Srinagar to Pahalgam: what to know
The route runs south-east on the highway past the saffron fields of Pampore and the ruins at Awantipora, then turns off at Anantnag and follows the Lidder river up to Pahalgam. It is the longest of the three day trips, which is why we recommend at least one night there.
- Status: Betaab (since June 2025), Aru (since September 2025) and Chandanwari (by June 2026) are open; Baisaran is still closed (November 2026).
- Yatra season: in July–August the Amarnath Yatra uses Pahalgam as a base, with convoys and checks.
- Stops: saffron fields at Pampore in late October–early November bloom; Awantipora temple ruins.
Srinagar to Sonmarg: what to know
The road heads north-east past Ganderbal and Kangan along the Sindh river, then through the Z-Morh tunnel, which bypasses the avalanche-prone Gagangir stretch that used to cut Sonmarg off in winter (inaugurated 13 January 2025). It is the easiest of the three as a day trip.
- Thajiwas Glacier reopened on 16 February 2026; trail season is roughly April/May to October.
- Zero Point by union taxi only, usually May–October.
- Winter: the town is reachable, but heavy snow can still close the road for short spells.
Sample day-trip timings from Srinagar
| Day trip | Leave Srinagar | Time on the ground | Back in Srinagar |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gulmarg | 7:30 am | About 5–6 hours (gondola slots run roughly 10 am–5 pm) | 6–7 pm |
| Sonmarg | 7:30 am | About 5 hours (Thajiwas or Zero Point, not both) | 6–7 pm |
| Pahalgam | 7 am | About 4 hours (two valleys by union taxi) | 7–8 pm |
These are planning estimates from the drive times above, not fixed schedules. In winter, daylight ends around 5:30 pm and snow can slow every road, so build in buffer or stay overnight.
From Srinagar airport or railway station
Most visitors start at Srinagar International Airport (SXR) or Srinagar railway station, served by Vande Bharat trains from Katra since June 2025 and from Jammu Tawi since May 2026. Our drivers pick up from either, and from Dal Lake ghats or any hotel. Going straight from the airport to Gulmarg or Pahalgam on arrival day is possible with a morning flight; with an afternoon arrival, spend the first night in Srinagar. Which is the best day trip from Srinagar?
| If you want… | Go to | Day trip or overnight? |
|---|---|---|
| Snow, gondola, skiing | Gulmarg | Day trip in summer; overnight in winter |
| Glacier walk, high-altitude snow point | Sonmarg | Day trip works well |
| River valleys, meadows, relaxed stay | Pahalgam | Overnight strongly recommended |
To fit all three into one trip, see our Kashmir itinerary (4, 5 and 7-day plans) and the 6-day itinerary. Package options start from ₹16,999 per person on the Magical Kashmir Economy tour (twin sharing, live page November 2026).
What this means for your trip
Do Sonmarg as a day trip, Gulmarg as a day trip in summer or an overnight in winter, and Pahalgam as an overnight. Book one cab with driver from Srinagar for the whole trip rather than separate day hires, budget union taxis and the gondola on top, and leave early on every travel day.
