Vaishno Devi in December 2026: Weather, Snow, Yatra Rules and RFID Registration

Vaishno Devi in December is cold but fully open. Katra at about 750 m has mild days; the Bhawan at about 1,580 m is near or below freezing after dark, with snow possible in the last week of December. You need a free RFID yatra card issued at Katra, and official-portal bookings for helicopter and battery car.

Short answer: Vaishno Devi in December is cold but fully open. Katra, at about 750 m, has mild days and chilly nights; the Bhawan, at about 1,580 m, is 8–10°C colder, near or below freezing after dark, with snow possible at the Bhawan and Bhairon in the last week of December. You need a free RFID yatra card from the Shrine Board, issued at Katra. Helicopter, battery car and accommodation are booked only on the Shrine Board’s own portal. Christmas to New Year is the busiest week of winter.

Quick answer (checked 23 October 2026)

  • Weather: Katra days roughly 18–20°C, nights 5–8°C; Bhawan and Sanjichhat 0–12°C with snow in December–January (Shrine Board climate note). Heavy woollens advised; blankets are free at the Bhawan.
  • RFID card: Mandatory, free, issued only by the Shrine Board at the Katra counters (YRC near the bus stand, YRC-II on Udhampur Road); cross Banganga within 6 hours of issue or the card lapses.
  • Capacity: About 30,000–35,000 pilgrims a day; registration was paused on 1 January 2026 during the New Year rush and can be again.
  • Bookings: Helicopter (Katra–Sanjichhat), battery car, poojan and rooms only on online.maavaishnodevi.org; the Bhawan–Bhairon ropeway runs 9 am to 5 pm.
  • Train: Vande Bharat 22439 leaves New Delhi 06:00, reaches Katra 14:20, six days a week (RailMitra timetable; confirm the weekly off day on IRCTC).
  • Note: As of October 2026 some foreign governments (UK FCDO, US State Department) advise against travel to Jammu and Kashmir; Indian pilgrims are unaffected, foreign passport holders should read their own advisory.

How cold is Vaishno Devi in December?

Two different climates matter here. Katra, the base town at about 750 m on the Jammu plain’s edge, has a winter much like Jammu’s: sunny days around 18–20°C and nights that drop to 5–8°C, with occasional fog in the mornings. The Bhawan, the cave shrine at about 1,580 m on the Trikuta hills, is a different world. The Shrine Board’s own climate note says plainly that snow falls at the Bhawan in December and January and advises heavy woollen clothing (maavaishnodevi.org, checked 23 October 2026). Expect 0–12°C on the upper track and ice on the Bhairon steps at dawn. The Shrine Board provides blankets free of cost at the Bhawan, so you do not need to carry one, but you do need gloves, a cap and a jacket that works at 2 am.

Snow is most likely in the last ten days of December and through January. It rarely stops the yatra; the Board keeps the track open, salts the steps and, if a route becomes risky, shifts pilgrims to the other track. Snow and rain do stop the helicopter and sometimes the battery car, so keep a day in hand if you rely on either.

What is the RFID yatra card, and how do I register in 2026?

Every pilgrim, including infants, needs an RFID Yatra Access Card. It is free, it is issued only by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, and it is checked at the Banganga gate about 1.5 km from Katra and again along the track. The physical card is issued at two counters in Katra: the Yatri Registration Counter (YRC) near the main bus stand, and YRC-II about a kilometre away on Udhampur Road near the second bus stand. Staff enter your name and details, take your photo on the spot and hand you the card. Carry a government photo ID such as Aadhaar; one card per person. Registration includes accident insurance of ₹3 lakh for adults and ₹1 lakh for minors (Shrine Board registration page).

The Board also offers pre-registration through its online portal and app; it speeds up the counter visit but does not replace it, because the RFID card itself is still issued at Katra. Two rules matter. You must cross the Banganga check post within 6 hours of the card being issued, or it is confiscated and you register again. During heavy rush the Board caps daily entry at the Trikuta carrying capacity of roughly 30,000–35,000 and stops issuing cards until the track clears; on 1 January 2026 fresh registrations were suspended for exactly this reason. Check the yatra status on the official site before you leave your hotel.

Which route should I take: old track, Tarakote Marg or Himkoti?

The walk from Katra to the Bhawan is about 12–13 km from Darshani Deodi, climbing roughly 830 m. Ardhkuwari, the cave where the goddess is said to have meditated, is the midpoint at about 6 km; it has its own queue and a separate darshan token.

Section Options December notes
Katra to Ardhkuwari (about 6–7 km) Old track via Banganga and Charan Paduka (steeper, more shops), or Tarakote Marg, the newer, gentler, cleaner path with rest shelters and a battery-car stretch. Tarakote is better for families and older pilgrims; it is colder and more exposed to wind.
Ardhkuwari to Bhawan (about 6 km) Old track via Hathi Matha (steep steps), or the Himkoti route used by battery cars and most walkers. After heavy rain or snow the Board sometimes closes Himkoti and shifts everyone to the old track, as it did after a landslide in August 2026.
Bhawan to Bhairon (about 2 km) Steep steps, pony, or the passenger ropeway (9 am to 5 pm per the Shrine Board). Ice on the steps at dawn; the ropeway queue is longest at 9 am.

After the 26 August 2025 landslide near Ardhkuwari, which killed 34 pilgrims, the Board closes a route quickly when the weather turns. Follow diversion signs, and do not walk the upper track in a snowstorm at night.

Helicopter, battery car, pony and palki: how do bookings work?

  • Helicopter: flies Katra helipad to Sanjichhat (about 2.5 km short of the Bhawan), a roughly 6-minute hop. Tickets are sold only through the Shrine Board’s online portal, with a limited same-day counter at the Katra helipad; the Board releases its monthly online quota in advance (the December 2026 quota opened on 1 October 2026 at 10 am). Return is a separate one-way ticket; avoid resellers. Fog and wind ground flights without notice from November to February.
  • Battery car: runs on the Himkoti route between Ardhkuwari and the Bhawan and on the Tarakote Marg stretch, with limited seats, priority for the elderly and disabled, and booking on the same portal or at the counters en route.
  • Pony, palki and pithoo: available from Katra and from Sanjichhat at Shrine Board rate-cards displayed at the stands; take the receipt and note the registration number. Rates are revised periodically, so read the board on the day rather than a blog.

Christmas to New Year: how busy does it get?

The second half of December is one of the three peaks of the year, with the summer school holidays and Navratri. Between 24 December and 2 January arrivals regularly exceed the daily capacity, darshan queues at the Bhawan stretch to several hours, and Katra hotels run full. The Board handles this by holding pilgrims in Katra and pausing registration, so an arrival on 31 December may mean a darshan on 1 or 2 January. If your dates are fixed, book the Katra hotel and any helicopter seats as soon as the quota opens, and start the climb early in the morning rather than at night.

If you only want a peaceful darshan, the first fifteen days of December are the quietest window of the winter: cool, clear, half the queue and off-peak hotel rates. We build Vaishno Devi as a custom package and price it on request because December rates vary by date; tell us your dates and we will quote in writing.

Can I do darshan at night in December?

Yes. The Bhawan is open round the clock, and the queue pauses only for the two aartis, at dawn and at dusk, which take about two hours each. Climbing through the night avoids daytime crowds, but in December think twice: the upper track can be at or below freezing between midnight and 6 am, ponies and battery cars are fewer, and if snow or rain closes a route you will be waiting outdoors. A better December plan: leave Katra around 5 am, Bhawan by 11, Bhairon after lunch, down before dark.

How do I reach Katra from Delhi?

Option Details (checked 23 October 2026)
Vande Bharat 22439 New Delhi 06:00 to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra 14:20, 655 km, stops at Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar Cantt, Pathankot Cantt and Jammu Tawi; six days a week, no service on one weekday (listings show Wednesday; confirm on IRCTC). Return 22440 the same day.
Overnight trains Several trains run New Delhi to Katra overnight; check IRCTC for current numbers and timings before booking.
Fly to Jammu Jammu airport to Katra is about 50 km, 1.5 hours by taxi. December fog can delay morning flights.
Car from Delhi About 650 km and 11–12 hours via Ambala, Ludhiana and Pathankot; break the journey in Amritsar.

Many families add Amritsar’s Golden Temple and Wagah; our Delhi to Amritsar guide covers that leg. Vande Bharat trains have linked Katra and Srinagar since June 2025; for a winter extension read Kashmir in December and our Kashmir tour packages page, noting the advisories above if anyone travels on a foreign passport.

Packing list and practical rules

  1. Government photo ID for every person, including children, for the RFID card and hotel check-in.
  2. Thermals, fleece, a windproof jacket, cap, gloves and a scarf; Katra will feel warm, the Bhawan will not.
  3. Shoes with grip and a spare pair of socks; the track is wet and icy in patches.
  4. A small bag only: leather items, cameras and large bags go to the lockers before the cave, and belts and wallets of leather are not allowed inside.
  5. A torch, a power bank and a little cash; UPI works at most stalls, not all.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vaishno Devi open in December?

Yes, the yatra runs all year, including December and January. The Shrine Board keeps the track, battery cars and the Bhawan–Bhairon ropeway operating in winter, pausing specific routes only when snow, rain or a landslide makes them unsafe. Helicopter flights are the most weather-sensitive service and are often cancelled in fog or wind, so keep a spare day if you depend on them.

Does it snow at Vaishno Devi in December?

It can, mainly in the last week of December and through January. The Shrine Board’s climate note says snow falls at the Bhawan in December and January. Katra itself, at about 750 m, does not get snow; the Bhawan at about 1,580 m, Sanjichhat and Bhairon do. Snow makes the upper steps icy and can halt helicopters, but it rarely stops the yatra.

How do I get the RFID yatra card?

Go to the Yatri Registration Counter near the Katra bus stand or YRC-II on Udhampur Road with a government photo ID. Staff take your photo and issue the card free of charge; each person, including children, needs one. You must cross the Banganga check post within 6 hours of issue. Online pre-registration on the Shrine Board portal speeds up the counter but does not replace the card.

Can I book the helicopter for Vaishno Devi online?

Yes, but only on the Shrine Board’s official portal, online.maavaishnodevi.org, which releases a monthly quota in advance; the December 2026 quota opened on 1 October 2026. The sector is Katra to Sanjichhat, about 6 minutes, with return booked as a separate ticket. A limited same-day counter operates at the Katra helipad. Avoid third-party resellers.

How crowded is Vaishno Devi between Christmas and New Year?

Very. The Board allows roughly 30,000–35,000 pilgrims a day based on the Trikuta carrying capacity, and arrivals exceed that between 24 December and 2 January. When they do, pilgrims wait in Katra and registration pauses; on 1 January 2026 fresh registrations were suspended. For a calm darshan choose the first half of December; for New Year, book early and start before dawn.

Which train is best from Delhi to Katra?

The Vande Bharat 22439 is the fastest daytime option, leaving New Delhi at 06:00 and reaching Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra at 14:20, six days a week, with stops at Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar Cantt, Pathankot Cantt and Jammu Tawi (RailMitra timetable, 23 October 2026). Confirm the weekly off day on IRCTC. Overnight trains also serve Katra if you prefer to sleep on the way.
