Shimla vs Manali: Which Should You Choose?
Short answer: pick Shimla for a short break of two or three nights, for elderly travellers who should not sit in a car all day, or if you want the toy train and colonial-era town. Pick Manali if snow is the point of the trip, if you have four nights or more, or if you want the high road through the Atal Tunnel. With five nights or more, you don’t have to choose: most of our guests do both, two nights in Shimla and three in Manali. Below is the side-by-side, month by month, with what each option costs on our own trips.
Shimla vs Manali at a glance
| Shimla | Manali | |
|---|---|---|
| Road from Delhi | about 345 km, 7–8 hours | about 540 km, 11–13 hours |
| Road from Chandigarh | about 3 hours | about 290 km, a full day |
| Train | Yes — Kalka–Shimla toy train, 96.6 km, UNESCO World Heritage | No railway. Nearest broad-gauge station is Una, about 250 km away |
| Airport | Jubbarhatti, about 22 km; short runway, limited flights | Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali), about 50 km; small aircraft, weather-dependent |
| Height of the town | railway station 2,075 m; the Ridge sits higher | about 2,050 m |
| When snow usually falls | In town, usually January or early February, and not every year. Kufri, 16–20 km away, usually has snow December–February | Mostly December to early March. Solang Valley, 13–14 km away, usually late December–February |
| Above the town | Kufri, Narkanda and the road on to Kinnaur and winter Spiti | Solang, the Atal Tunnel (about 3,000 m) to Sissu, and Rohtang Pass in season |
| Feel of the place | A busy hill city: Mall Road, the Ridge, British-era buildings, the old summer capital | A mountain town at the head of the Kullu valley: Old Manali, orchards, river, a jumping-off point for high country |
| Nights you need | 2 is enough for most people | 3 or more, because getting there takes a day |
Choose Shimla if…
- You only have a long weekend. From Chandigarh, Shimla is about three hours. From Delhi it is one long day’s drive. Manali needs a full day each way from almost anywhere, which leaves very little time there on a three-night trip.
- You are travelling with older parents or small children. Shorter drives, a town you can walk on the flat along the Mall and the Ridge, and hospitals and services close by.
- You want the train. The narrow-gauge Kalka–Shimla Railway opened in 1903. It runs through 102 tunnels and over 988 bridges and is part of the UNESCO “Mountain Railways of India” World Heritage Site. It is slow — trains average 25–30 km/h — and that is the point.
- History matters to you. Shimla was declared the summer capital of British India in 1863, and the town still looks like it.
- You want snow on a short trip. Shimla town is not reliable for snow, but Kufri is close. You can see what’s possible there on our Kufri page.
Choose Manali if…
- Snow is the reason for the trip. Manali gets more snow than Shimla, over a longer window, and the snow points above it (Solang, and Sissu through the Atal Tunnel) give you a backup when the town itself is clear. See Solang Valley for what runs in which season.
- You have four nights or more. Manali repays time: a day in Old Manali and Vashisht, a day up the valley to Solang, a day through the Atal Tunnel to Lahaul, and a day for Naggar or Kasol.
- You want the high road. The 9.02 km Atal Tunnel opened in October 2020 and cut the Manali–Keylong road from 116 km to 71 km. It puts the Lahaul valley within a day trip from Manali almost all year round. Rohtang Pass needs a permit and closes in winter — our Rohtang permit and road status guide keeps the current position.
- You are a couple. Manali is where most of our honeymoon trips are based. See the Kullu Manali honeymoon package.
Or do both: the Shimla–Manali circuit
Shimla to Manali is about 245 km by road, a full travel day through Mandi and the Kullu valley. With five nights, the classic split is two nights in Shimla and three in Manali. Shimla works as the stop on the way up, so you never drive the long Delhi–Manali or Chandigarh–Manali leg in one go.

Shimla or Manali, month by month
| When | Better pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-March – June | Manali, or both | Clear weather and the high roads open up through the season. Peak demand on both towns, so book early. |
| July – September | Shimla | Monsoon. Both routes can be hit by landslides, but the Shimla run is shorter, so there is less road to go wrong. Lowest rates of the year. |
| October | Either, or both | Settled, clear weather. Kullu Dussehra fills the Manali valley — see our Kullu Dussehra 2026 guide. Long weekends jam both towns. |
| November – mid-December | Either | Cold, clear and quiet, with off-season rates. Snow is a gamble in both towns this early. |
| Late December – February | Manali for snow; Shimla for an easier winter trip | Manali has the longer, more reliable snow season. Fresh snow can close roads above both towns for a day or two, so build in a spare day. |
Our pricing follows the same calendar, and we name the dates. Off-season (the rates shown above): 1 July – 30 September, 1 November – 19 December, and 6 January – 14 March. Peak season (25% above the off-season rate): 15 March – 30 June, the whole of October, and 20 December – 5 January.
Crowds: plan around the long weekends
Both towns fill up fast on long weekends. Over the Gandhi Jayanti weekend this year, around 16,000 vehicles moved through Shimla’s entry and exit points on a single day, and Manali was jammed at the same time — our October 2026 traffic report has the details. If your dates are flexible, travel midweek. If they are not, we start early and choose hotels away from the most congested stretches.

Questions about Shimla vs Manali
Which is better, Shimla or Manali?
Neither is better for everyone. Shimla is better for short trips, older travellers and anyone who wants the toy train or the colonial town. Manali is better for snow, for trips of four nights or more and for the high road through the Atal Tunnel. With five nights or more, do both.
Which has more snow, Shimla or Manali?
Manali. Snow there falls mostly from December to early March, and Solang and Sissu above the town give you more chances. In Shimla town, snow usually comes in January or early February and does not fall every year. Kufri, near Shimla, is the more reliable snow point on that side.
Is Shimla or Manali better for a 3-day trip?
Shimla. It is about three hours from Chandigarh and one day’s drive from Delhi, so you get two full days in the hills. On a 3-day trip to Manali, most of the time goes into the drive.
How far is Manali from Shimla?
About 245 km by road, through Mandi and the Kullu valley. Plan for a full travel day. That is why the usual circuit is two nights in Shimla, then three in Manali.
Which is cheaper, Shimla or Manali?
Shimla is usually cheaper as a short trip because there is less driving. On a full circuit covering both, our 5-night Shimla–Manali trip starts at ₹12,499 per person from Chandigarh and ₹14,499 from Delhi (twin sharing, Deluxe, off-season). Peak dates are 25% higher.
