Dharamshala vs Dalhousie: Which Is Better for Your Trip?
Choose Dharamshala if you want more to do: Tibetan culture in McLeod Ganj, cafés, monasteries, the cricket stadium and an airport 15 km away. Choose Dalhousie if you want quiet: colonial walks, pine forest, the Khajjiar meadow and colder, snowier winters. The two towns are only one driving day apart, about 4 to 5 hours, so most people with four nights or more see both. This page compares them on the points travellers actually decide on: height and weather, how to get there, what each town is like, who each one suits, and what a trip costs.
Short answer: with 2–3 nights, pick one. Go to Dharamshala for culture and easy flights, or Dalhousie for a slow, quiet break. With 4 nights or more, do both from Pathankot. Our Dharamshala Dalhousie trip from Pathankot (4N/5D) starts from ₹14,500 per person, off-season.

Dharamshala: the case for it
Dharamshala is really two towns. The lower town holds the offices, the bus stand and the HPCA cricket stadium. The upper town, with McLeod Ganj and Bhagsu, is where most visitors stay. It is the home of the Tibetan government in exile and the Dalai Lama’s temple complex, so the town has a culture you won’t find anywhere else in Himachal: monasteries, the Tibet Museum, the Norbulingka Institute, and streets full of Tibetan food.
It is also the easier town to reach quickly. Kangra airport at Gaggal is about 15 km away, so a long weekend by air works. There is more to fill your days: Bhagsu waterfall, St. John in the Wilderness church, Naddi viewpoint, the tea gardens towards Palampur, and day trips to Bir. For the adventure side of the Kangra valley, such as the paragliding at Bir Billing, see our adventure activities in Himachal page.
The catch: McLeod Ganj is busy and its lanes are narrow. Traffic jams are common at weekends and in peak season. The monsoon is very heavy here, so July and August are the weakest months.
Dalhousie: the case for it
Dalhousie was built by the British as a summer retreat and named after Lord Dalhousie. It still feels like one. The town sits across five hills, with old churches, Gandhi Chowk, and walks through deodar and pine forest. It is higher than Dharamshala, so it is cooler in summer and colder in winter.
Its big draw is Khajjiar, a meadow ringed by forest about 17 km away, which makes an easy half-day trip. The Kalatop wildlife sanctuary lies on the same road. Chamba town, with its old temples, is about 35 km away and makes a good full day out.
The catch: there is less to do in the evenings. Without a meadow day or a Chamba trip, two nights is plenty. In heavy snow, the roads to Khajjiar and some hotels can be hard to reach for a day or two.
Which one by month
- March to June: both are good. Dalhousie is the cooler choice in May and June, when the plains are hottest.
- July to mid-September: monsoon. Both are green but wet; Dharamshala gets much more rain. If you must travel then, keep the plan short and flexible.
- Late September to November: clear skies and views of the Dhauladhar range. A strong time for both, and the best time for Dharamshala.
- December to February: Dalhousie is the better bet for snow, though nobody can promise snow on a given date. In Dharamshala, snow is more likely in the upper town than in the lower town.
Our rates follow fixed season windows. Off-season (the rates on this page): 1 July – 30 September, 1 November – 19 December, and 6 January – 14 March. Peak (off-season rate + 25%): 15 March – 30 June, all of October, and 20 December – 5 January.
Getting between them, and getting there
Dharamshala to Dalhousie is about 120 km and 4 to 5 hours by car, via Chamba and the Jot road in clear weather. When that road has snow, or after heavy monsoon rain, drivers go round by the Pathankot side instead. That route is about 170 km but takes a similar time on better roads. There is no direct train between the two towns.
From the plains, Pathankot is the easiest start for both. It is the main railhead, and each town is about 2.5 to 3 hours from it by car. That is why our shortest combined trip starts there. From Delhi or Chandigarh it is a full driving day each way. A sensible 4-night split is two nights in Dharamshala (McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu, Norbulingka) and two in Dalhousie, with Khajjiar on the way in or out. With a fifth night, add Chamba or a day towards Palampur. For families with elders or small children, this circuit has the shortest drives of any Himachal trip. Our Himachal family trips page compares it with Shimla–Manali.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Dharamshala or Dalhousie?
Neither is better for everyone. Dharamshala suits travellers who want culture, cafés and things to do, and who want to fly in. Dalhousie suits travellers who want a quiet, cool hill station and the Khajjiar meadow. With four nights or more, see both.
Is Dalhousie colder than Dharamshala?
Yes. Dalhousie is at about 1,970 m, higher than both the lower town of Dharamshala (about 1,380 m) and McLeod Ganj (about 1,830 m). It sees roughly 20–30 snowy days a year.
Where is it more likely to snow in December or January?
Dalhousie and the upper part of Dharamshala (McLeod Ganj) get snow most winters. The lower town of Dharamshala rarely does. No date is guaranteed, so keep a flexible day if snow is the reason for the trip.
How far is Dalhousie from Dharamshala?
About 120 km and 4 to 5 hours by car via Chamba and the Jot road. When that road is blocked by snow, drivers take the Pathankot side, about 170 km.
How many days do I need for Dharamshala and Dalhousie together?
Four nights from Pathankot is the comfortable minimum: two nights in each town. From Delhi or Chandigarh, add a night, because the drive from the plains takes most of a day each way.
Which is better for a honeymoon?
Dalhousie, for privacy and quiet. Many couples still spend a night or two in McLeod Ganj for the cafés and the evening atmosphere, then move on to Dalhousie and Khajjiar.
