Road tips for Shimla to Manali
Start early, arrive in daylight
Seven to eight hours of hill and valley road is a full day. A 6–7 am start from Shimla gets you to Manali by mid-afternoon with breakfast at Bilaspur and lunch near Mandi; our drivers avoid the hill stretches late at night.
Kullu–Manali stretch
The highway along the Beas between Kullu and Manali was badly hit by the August 2025 floods. As of April 2026 NHAI repairs were still under way and some sections ran single-lane, so the last 40 km can be slow. The driver checks the day’s traffic plan before you leave and uses the left-bank road via Naggar if the main road is held up.
No border, no entry fee
Shimla and Manali are both in Himachal, so a Shimla-based car crosses no state barrier on this route. Tolls and parking on the way are added at actuals and shown in your quote.
Jalori Pass instead?
The quieter route via Narkanda, Jalori Pass and Banjar is beautiful but narrow, steep and slower, and Jalori closes after snow. Ask for it only in good weather between May and November — we quote it separately.
Manali sightseeing is a different car
Solang, Atal Tunnel–Sissu and Rohtang trips run in Manali-registered union taxis, and Rohtang needs an online permit and is closed on Tuesdays. We book those at union rates — see Manali taxi service.
Snow months need a plan
From mid-December to February roads above Shimla and Manali can close after fresh snow. Drivers carry chains; sometimes the last stretch is done in a local 4×4. We confirm the day before.

Questions travellers ask
What is the taxi fare from Shimla to Manali?
One-way fares start around ₹3,899 for a hatchback, ₹4,599 for a sedan, ₹5,599 for an Ertiga, ₹6,199 for a Kia Carens and ₹7,799 for an Innova Crysta. A 12-seater Tempo Traveller starts around ₹10,399. Tolls and parking are extra at actuals; peak dates (May–June, Christmas–New Year) cost more.
How long does Shimla to Manali take by taxi?
About 7–8 hours for roughly 250 km, including breakfast and lunch stops. Weekend traffic near Kullu, or one-way sections on the Kullu–Manali road, can add an hour or more.
Which route does the taxi take from Shimla to Manali?
The usual route goes west from Shimla via Ghanahatti and Darlaghat to Bilaspur, then up the Kiratpur–Manali highway through Sundernagar, the Mandi bypass, the Pandoh–Aut tunnels, Bhuntar and Kullu. The Narkanda–Jalori Pass–Banjar road is a scenic option in good weather only.
Is the Manali to Shimla fare the same?
Yes. The same one-way fares apply from any Manali hotel to anywhere in Shimla, Kufri or Mashobra, and we also run Manali to Shimla drops that continue to Chandigarh or Delhi.
Can we stop at Kullu or Kasol on the way?
Kullu is on the route, so a stop for shawl shopping or river rafting costs only time. Kasol and Manikaran are a 30 km detour from Bhuntar — add it when you book and we quote one fare.
Can I book a Shimla–Manali tour in one car?
Yes. Multi-day tours are billed per kilometre driven (a sedan is ₹12/km, 250 km daily minimum) plus ₹400 a night driver allowance. Delhi or Chandigarh → Shimla → Manali → back in the same car is usually cheaper than separate one-way drops.
Is Shimla to Manali by road open in winter?
Usually, yes — the valley road via Mandi and Kullu sits lower than Shimla and Manali, and fresh snow mostly hits Shimla’s upper roads and the area above Manali. From mid-December to February we confirm road status the day before and may move your start time.
Is the Shimla to Manali road safe in the monsoon?
Mid-July to August brings landslides on hill highways. We watch road advisories, avoid late starts, and change the start time or route when needed at no extra charge for a route change we suggest.
