Short answer: April is the quiet shoulder month in Manali. Days average about 21 °C and nights about 6 °C (IMD normals), apple orchards are in blossom, and the summer crowds have not started. Snow is gone from town but still lies at Solang in early April and at Sissu beyond the Atal Tunnel for most of the month. Rohtang Pass stays shut until mid or late May. Peak-season package rates apply from 15 March, so expect about 25% over our off-season prices.
Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)
- Weather: 21.4 °C average day, 6.4 °C average night, about 88 mm of rain over 6 wet days (IMD 1991–2020 normals for Manali).
- Snow: none in town; patchy at Solang in the first week; reliable at Sissu and the Atal Tunnel’s north portal through most of April.
- Rohtang: closed. It reopened to tourists on 15 May 2026, 17 May 2025 and 24 May 2024.
- Crowds: light until the last week, when school holidays in Punjab and Delhi begin to show.
- Prices: peak band from 15 March; our Shimla–Manali 5N/6D from Chandigarh is ₹12,499 off-season, so budget roughly 25% more for April dates.

Is there snow in Manali in April?
Not in town, and most years not at Solang after the first week or two. Manali sits at about 2,050 m, and by April the winter snow has melted from the Mall, Old Manali and Hadimba. Solang Valley (about 2,500 m, 13 km north) usually keeps a few patches in the shade early in the month, enough for photographs but not for the snow activities that run in January and February.
The reliable snow is on the other side of the Atal Tunnel at Sissu, about 40 km from Manali. Lahaul holds its snow longer than Kullu, and in April the north portal area and the Sissu meadows are usually white. Fresh snow is still possible: on 31 March 2024 both tunnel portals had fresh snowfall and police stopped traffic beyond Solang (The Tribune, 31 March 2024). In our experience a late-March or early-April storm happens roughly every other year, so an April visit has a fair chance of a snow day, but no promise of one.
If snow is the point of your trip, our Manali in March guide and snowfall in Manali post explain the better months. If you want blossom, warm days and quiet roads, April is hard to beat.
How warm is Manali in April?
April is the first properly mild month. The figures below are India Meteorological Department climate normals for 1991–2020, with extremes from 1968–2020, as tabulated on Wikipedia (checked 30 October 2026).
| Manali (about 2,050 m) | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average day temperature | 17.1 °C | 21.4 °C | 24.9 °C |
| Average night temperature | 3.3 °C | 6.4 °C | 9.3 °C |
| Record low | −6.0 °C | −1.0 °C | 1.0 °C |
| Record high | 27.0 °C | 30.0 °C | 35.0 °C |
| Rain and snow (monthly) | 154.9 mm | 87.7 mm | 66.4 mm |
| Wet days | 8.4 | 6.0 | 6.2 |
What the table means on the ground: mornings are crisp enough for a fleece, afternoons are T-shirt weather in the sun, and evenings on the Mall need a jacket. April has fewer wet days than March, but showers come as short, sharp afternoon storms rather than all-day rain, so plan outdoor activities for the morning.
Early April or late April: which half should you pick?
The month changes character around the 20th.
| 1–15 April | 16–30 April | |
|---|---|---|
| Snow | Patches at Solang, good cover at Sissu, chance of a fresh fall | Sissu only, melting fast on south-facing slopes |
| Blossom | Apple and plum orchards in full bloom around Naggar, Jagatsukh and Old Manali | Blossom over in the valley, still on at higher orchards |
| Crowds | Light; hotels have rooms on the day | Building; Punjab and Delhi school holidays start, weekends busy |
| Rafting and paragliding | Paragliding on; rafting depends on the river level | Both running most days |
| Rohtang | Closed; BRO snow clearing under way | Closed; road open to Gulaba or Marhi for sightseeing in some years |
Couples and photographers should aim for the first fortnight. Families tied to school dates will be in the second half, which is still far quieter than May.
What is open in Manali in April: Rohtang, Atal Tunnel and Solang?
- Rohtang Pass (3,978 m): closed for the whole of April in every recent year. It reopened to tourists on 15 May 2026, 17 May 2025 and 24 May 2024 (Discover Kullu Manali road-status log, checked 30 October 2026). In some years the road is open as far as Gulaba or Marhi in late April, which gives you snow views without the pass. Our Rohtang permit and road status page is updated through the season.
- Atal Tunnel (9 km): open year-round, with short closures during heavy snow. In April it is the way to Sissu, Keylong and the Lahaul snow, and the only reason to go north of Solang.
- Solang Valley: open. The ropeway, zorbing and the paragliding take-off are all running; snow activities depend on what is left on the ground. Our Solang Valley activities page lists what runs in which month.
- Hadimba, Old Manali, Vashisht, Naggar Castle: all open, and April is the best month for the Naggar road because of the blossom.
- Beas rafting at Pirdi: the season usually starts in April as the snowmelt raises the river; see our Kullu–Manali rafting page. Operators pause on high-flow days.
What can you do in Manali in April?
- Drive the orchard road to Naggar: 20 km south on the left bank of the Beas, through apple and plum blossom, to Naggar Castle and the Roerich gallery.
- Atal Tunnel to Sissu: a half-day trip for snow, the Sissu waterfall across the valley and lunch in Lahaul.
- Paragliding at Solang: flights run through April when the wind allows; our paragliding in Manali page explains the short and long flights.
- Walk Old Manali and Vashisht: cafés reopen after winter, the hot springs at Vashisht are a good evening, and the lanes are empty compared with May. Our Old Manali guide has the details.
- Day hikes: the Jogini Falls walk from Vashisht and the Lamadugh meadow trail above Manali are both clear of snow by April.
- Camping and riverside stays: April nights are cold but dry enough for camping near Manali; bring a proper sleeping bag.

How much does a Manali trip cost in April?
Peak-season rates on our Himachal packages apply from 15 March, so April falls in the higher band. Our published off-season starting prices (per person, Deluxe category, twin sharing, live on 30 October 2026) are:
- Shimla–Manali from Chandigarh, 5N/6D: ₹12,499 off-season; expect roughly 25% more for April dates.

- Manali from Delhi, 4N/5D: ₹14,999 off-season.

A 20% token confirms a package, with a full refund if you cancel within 48 hours of paying.
A 5-day Manali plan for April
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive from Delhi or Chandigarh; evening walk on the Mall and Van Vihar. |
| 2 | Hadimba temple, Manu temple and Old Manali in the morning; Vashisht hot springs and Jogini Falls walk after lunch. |
| 3 | Solang Valley for paragliding or the ropeway, then through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu for snow. |
| 4 | Naggar Castle and the orchard road in blossom; rafting at Pirdi on the way back if the river allows. |
| 5 | Kullu shawl shops and the drive out via Mandi, or the Volvo back to Delhi. |
Families can swap day 4 for the family version of this plan, which keeps the drives shorter.
What should you pack for Manali in April?
- A light down jacket or fleece for mornings and evenings; a T-shirt layer for midday.
- A waterproof shell for afternoon showers.
- Proper shoes with grip for Sissu, where the snow is slushy by afternoon; snow boots can be hired at Solang if you want to walk on the snow.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses: April sun at 2,000 m burns faster than it feels.
- Cash for small cafés and parking at Solang; UPI works almost everywhere else.
Frequently asked questions
Is April a good time to visit Manali?
Yes, especially for couples and anyone who dislikes crowds. Days average about 21 °C, nights about 6 °C, apple orchards are in blossom, and the roads and the Mall are far quieter than in May and June. The trade-off is that snow is limited to Sissu beyond the Atal Tunnel, and Rohtang Pass stays closed.
Can I see snow in Manali in April 2027?
Almost certainly at Sissu, 40 km away through the Atal Tunnel, where Lahaul holds its snow into late April. Solang usually has patches in the first week or two. Fresh snowfall in town is unlikely but not impossible; late-March storms have brought snow to the tunnel portals in recent years, so keep a day flexible.
Is Rohtang Pass open in April?
No. The pass has reopened to tourists in mid to late May in every recent year: 15 May 2026, 17 May 2025 and 24 May 2024. In late April the road is sometimes open as far as Gulaba or Marhi for snow views. The Atal Tunnel stays open, so Sissu and Keylong are reachable all month.
How crowded is Manali in April?
Light for the first three weeks. Hotels have rooms on the day, Solang has no queue for the ropeway, and the Mall is easy in the evening. The last week of April picks up as school holidays begin in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, and weekends from then on feel more like May.
How much does a Manali trip cost in April?
Our Shimla–Manali package from Chandigarh starts at ₹12,499 per person off-season and the Manali package from Delhi at ₹14,999, with peak-season rates about 25% higher applying from 15 March, so April dates sit in the higher band. Hotels booked independently are cheaper in April than in May and June.
Is rafting open in Manali in April?
Usually, yes. The Beas rafting stretch at Pirdi near Kullu typically opens in April as snowmelt raises the river, and operators run 7 km and 14 km sections. On days of very high flow after a storm they pause, so treat rafting as a morning option rather than a fixed booking.
