Which start city should you choose?
The circuit is the same; what changes is how long you spend on the plains. Pathankot sits at the foot of both hill towns, so trips from there have the least driving.

This is the day plan of our 4N/5D trip from Pathankot. The Delhi version follows the same days with a Delhi pickup and drop; the Chandigarh version adds a sixth day in Dalhousie for Panchpula, Subhash Baoli and St John’s Church.

McLeod Ganj is the upper part of Dharamshala, about 9 km above the lower town, at about 1,830 m; it is the home of the Tibetan government in exile and the base for the Triund trek. Dalhousie sits at about 1,970 m over five hills. Khajjiar is a saucer-shaped meadow ringed by deodar forest; a Swiss diplomat called it the “Mini Switzerland of India” in 1992. Horse rides, zorbing and paragliding at Khajjiar are optional and paid locally.
The Dharamshala to Dalhousie drive
The transfer between the two towns is about 120 km (OSRM routing gives 119 km) and takes 4–5 hours by car with a tea stop. It is a hill road all the way, so it is a travel day with a short evening in Dalhousie. After snow or heavy monsoon rain, drivers may take a longer way round on the Pathankot side, about 170 km, which takes a similar time on better roads. There is no train or flight between the two towns. If anyone gets car-sick, tell the driver at the start so he plans more stops.
Adding Amritsar to the trip
Amritsar is about 200 km and 5–6 hours from Dharamshala by road, via Pathankot, and about the same from Dalhousie. That makes it an easy add-on at either end:
- Start in Amritsar: Golden Temple at dawn, then drive to Dharamshala the same day; finish the circuit at Pathankot.
- End in Amritsar: from Dalhousie drive down to Amritsar, stay a night for the Golden Temple and the Attari–Wagah flag ceremony (5 pm), and fly or take the train home.

Fly to Kangra if you are short of leave; book the Delhi trip from ₹16,499 if you want door-to-door; choose the 6-day Chandigarh trip for a slower pace.
