Short answer: May is Shimla’s main season. Days average about 23 °C and nights about 14 °C (IMD normals), with light rain on about seven days, so it is the month people come up from a 42 °C Delhi for. It is also the most crowded month, with the Mall and the Ridge full by mid-morning and hotel rates at their peak. The International Shimla Summer Festival on the Ridge was held 8–12 June in 2026 and usually falls in late May or June; dates for 2027 will be announced closer to the time. Our package rates sit in the peak band from 15 March.

Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)

  • Weather: 23.0 °C average day, 13.6 °C average night, about 82 mm of rain over 7 wet days (IMD 1991–2020 normals for Shimla).
  • Crowds: peak; weekends and the last fortnight of May are the heaviest, with traffic held at Shoghi on bad days.
  • Summer Festival: 8–12 June in 2026 on the Ridge and the Mall; late May or June in most years. Check the Shimla district website for 2027 dates.
  • Open: everything. Kufri, Chail, Narkanda, Tattapani rafting (until the monsoon), the toy train from Kalka (the Kalka section was shut for repairs until 30 November 2026 and should be back by May 2027).
  • Prices: peak band on our packages; Shimla–Manali 5N/6D from Chandigarh starts at ₹12,499 off-season, so budget about 25% more for May.
  • Best for: families escaping the plains, first-time visitors, a Shimla–Manali loop.

What is the weather like in Shimla in May?

Pleasant is the honest word. Shimla sits at about 2,200 m, which is enough to take 15–20 °C off the plains temperature. May afternoons are warm in the sun and cool in the shade of the deodars, and evenings on the Ridge need a light jacket. The figures below are India Meteorological Department climate normals for 1991–2020, as tabulated on Wikipedia and checked on 30 October 2026.

Shimla (about 2,200 m) April May June
Average day temperature 19.8 °C 23.0 °C 23.8 °C
Average night temperature 10.8 °C 13.6 °C 15.1 °C
Record high 29.6 °C 32.4 °C 31.5 °C
Record low −1.3 °C 1.4 °C 7.8 °C
Rain (monthly) 58.3 mm 82.2 mm 191.8 mm
Wet days 4.4 7.0 10.0

May’s rain comes as afternoon thunderstorms, often with hail, that last an hour and leave the air clear. The 32 °C record shows a heatwave can reach Shimla, and in a hot year the second half of May feels warm at midday; Kufri (2,700 m) and Narkanda (2,700 m) are the escape. Compare this with our Manali in May guide: Manali is about 2 °C warmer by day and 4 °C colder at night.

How crowded is Shimla in May?

Very. May is when school holidays begin across Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and UP, and Shimla is the closest hill station to all of them. In our experience the Mall and the Ridge are comfortable before 10:00 and after 19:00 and shoulder to shoulder in between, the lift from Cart Road has a queue from noon, and parking at the Kufri turn-off fills by 11:00. On the worst days police hold incoming traffic at Shoghi, 12 km below town; our note on the October 2026 Shimla and Manali jams shows what that looks like, and May weekends are similar.

Ways around it that we use for our own groups:

  • Arrive on a weekday morning, leave on a weekday. A Monday-to-Friday trip sees far fewer people than a Friday-to-Monday one.
  • Stay out of the centre. Mashobra, Naldehra, Kufri and Shoghi are 10–20 km away and a world quieter; drive in for the Mall in the evening.
  • Do Kufri at 08:00, before the pony and yak queues; it is back to a quiet hilltop by then.
  • Use the toy train for the arrival; it bypasses the Kalka–Shimla road jam entirely.

When is the Shimla Summer Festival?

The International Shimla Summer Festival is a five-day programme of evening concerts, folk performances, a flower show, a dog show and food stalls on the Ridge and the Mall. In 2026 it ran from 8 to 12 June, announced by the Deputy Commissioner (The Tribune, 26 May 2026), with star nights on the Ridge and a helicopter joyride over the seven hills as a new addition. In earlier years it has been held in late May or the first week of June, so the dates move. If the festival is the reason for your trip, wait for the 2027 announcement, which usually comes two to three weeks before, and book the hotel the same day.

Two other May dates to know about: Buddha Purnima (a holiday that brings a long weekend to the hills, in May in most years) and the last Saturday of May, which in our bookings is the single busiest arrival day of the year in Shimla.

What is open in Shimla in May?

  • The Ridge, Mall, Christ Church, Jakhoo temple and ropeway, Viceregal Lodge: all open daily; the Lodge (Indian Institute of Advanced Study) has guided tours and is closed on Mondays in most years, so check at the gate.
  • Kufri (16 km): open; no snow in May, but the Himalayan Nature Park, the Mahasu Peak ride and the adventure park are all running. See Kufri adventure activities.
  • Chail (45 km) and Naldehra (22 km): open; Naldehra’s golf course and Chail’s cricket ground are both at their greenest in May.
  • Narkanda (60 km): no skiing, but Hatu Peak (3,400 m) is clear of snow by May and the apple orchards are in leaf.
  • Tattapani rafting (50 km): the Sutlej stretch runs until the monsoon; our rafting at Tattapani page has details.
  • Paragliding: flights run near Shimla on calm mornings; see paragliding in Shimla.
  • Kalka–Shimla toy train: the Kalka–Dharampur section was shut for repairs until 30 November 2026, with trains running Dharampur–Shimla only. By May 2027 the full line should be back; confirm on IRCTC and read our toy train status post.
  • Delhi–Shimla flight: Alliance Air has flown Delhi–Shimla six days a week since May 2026, which avoids the road altogether.

May falls in the peak band on our Himachal packages, which runs from 15 March and is roughly 25% above the off-season starting prices below (per person, Deluxe category, twin sharing, live on 30 October 2026):

A 4-day Shimla plan for May

Day Plan
1 Toy train or car from Kalka/Chandigarh in the morning; afternoon walk on the Ridge, Christ Church and Scandal Point; evening on the Mall.
2 Kufri at 08:00 (nature park, Mahasu Peak), then Fagu and Naldehra; back by 16:00 before the Kufri road jam.
3 Jakhoo temple by the ropeway early; Viceregal Lodge tour; Mashobra for a late lunch; the Ridge at sunset.
4 Tattapani rafting and hot springs, or Chail, then drive down to Chandigarh in the afternoon.

With six days, carry on to Manali for the second half of the classic loop; with a week and a taste for quieter roads, go north to Narkanda and Sarahan instead.

What should you pack for Shimla in May?

  • Light cottons for the day; a fleece or light jacket for evenings on the Ridge.
  • A compact umbrella or rain shell for the afternoon storm.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: Shimla is stairs and slopes, and cars cannot enter the Mall.
  • Sunscreen and a cap for Kufri and Hatu.
  • Cash for the Jakhoo ropeway and Kufri ponies; cards and UPI work on the Mall.

Frequently asked questions

Is May a good time to visit Shimla?

For weather, yes: days around 23 °C, nights around 14 °C, and short afternoon showers. It is also the most crowded month, with the Mall and the Ridge full from mid-morning and peak hotel rates. If you can travel midweek, stay a little outside the centre and start early, May is a comfortable month for families escaping the plains.

How hot is Shimla in May?

The IMD normal for May is a 23.0 °C average maximum and a 13.6 °C minimum. The record high is 32.4 °C, so a heatwave year feels warm at midday on the Mall, but it is still 15–20 °C cooler than Delhi. Kufri and Narkanda at 2,700 m are a few degrees cooler again.

When is the Shimla Summer Festival 2027?

Not yet announced. The 2026 International Shimla Summer Festival ran from 8 to 12 June on the Ridge and the Mall, with evening concerts, a flower show and folk performances; earlier editions were held in late May or early June. Dates are usually announced two to three weeks ahead on the district administration’s channels.

Is the toy train running in May?

It should be. The Kalka–Dharampur section was closed for repairs until 30 November 2026, with trains running only between Dharampur and Shimla. The full Kalka–Shimla line is expected to be back well before May 2027, but check IRCTC when you book; seats on the morning trains sell out weeks ahead in May.

How crowded is Shimla in May?

It is the busiest month of the year. School holidays across north India begin in May, and weekends and the last two weeks of the month are the heaviest, with police sometimes holding traffic at Shoghi. The Mall is pleasant before 10:00 and after 19:00. Hotels outside the centre in Mashobra, Naldehra or Kufri avoid most of the crush.

How much does a Shimla trip cost in May?

May is in our peak band, roughly 25% above the off-season starting prices: Shimla–Manali from Chandigarh from ₹12,499 and from Delhi from ₹14,999 per person on twin sharing. A Shimla-only package from Chandigarh is quoted per request. Hotels near the Mall are at their highest rates of the year in May and early June.
