Short answer: The places to visit in Udaipur in 3 days split neatly: Day 1 is the old city and Lake Pichola (City Palace, Jagdish temple, a boat to Jag Mandir, the 19:00 Dharohar dance show at Bagore ki Haveli); Day 2 is the Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur day trip, a 210–230 km loop through the Aravallis; Day 3 is the lakes and hills around town (Saheliyon ki Bari, Fateh Sagar, Shilpgram, Eklingji, sunset at Sajjangarh). Arrive on the overnight 12963 Mewar Express from Delhi (Nizamuddin 18:25 → Udaipur 07:30) and all three days are full days.
Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)
- Day 1, old city and Pichola: City Palace Museum (₹300 Indian adult, ₹100 for ages 5–18) → Jagdish temple → Lake Pichola boat to Jag Mandir → Gangaur Ghat → Dharohar show at Bagore ki Haveli, 19:00 (₹90 Indian adult; tickets from 18:15).

- Best months: September to March; the monsoon (July–September) is lovely for the lakes and Kumbhalgarh.
- Budget: roughly ₹12,000–₹16,000 per person for three days in three-star hotels with a shared car; heritage hotels push it to ₹25,000+.

Is 3 days enough for Udaipur?
Three days is the right length. One day covers the old city and Lake Pichola, which is what most people picture when they think of Udaipur. A second day is needed for Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur, which are too far for a half day but too good to skip. The third day mops up the lakes north of the old city, the craft village at Shilpgram, the 8th-century Eklingji temple, and the Monsoon Palace at sunset, none of which is essential alone but which together make the difference between seeing Udaipur and knowing it.
With two days you drop Day 3; with four you add Chittorgarh (about 115 km east, the largest fort in India) or continue to Mount Abu (about 160 km south), which our Udaipur Mount Abu tour package guide covers. For a sight-by-sight list with fees and timings, see Udaipur tourist places; for a general orientation, our Udaipur travel guide.

Day 2: the Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur day trip

| 07:00 | Leave Udaipur | Take a packed breakfast or stop at a dhaba near Gogunda; the road climbs into the Aravallis |

| 12:45–13:30 | Lunch | RTDC Hotel Shilpi or one of the small restaurants near the temple gate; vegetarian only in the temple area |
| 13:30–15:00 | Ranakpur Jain temple | Tourist entry roughly 12:00–17:00 (Jain worshippers before noon); 1,444 carved marble pillars, no two alike. Entry, camera and audio-guide charges vary by source, so carry cash and check at the counter. Leather items and short clothing not allowed |
| 15:15–18:00 | Return to Udaipur | About 90–95 km, 2–2.5 h. Evening free; dinner at Ambrai Ghat for the lit-up palace |
Distances and the day plan follow the TravelCoffee Udaipur–Kumbhalgarh–Ranakpur guide checked on 30 October 2026, and match our drivers’ experience. If you would rather spend the night in the hills, Kumbhalgarh has resorts near the fort and the evening light-and-sound show (around 18:45, Hindi) is worth staying for; our Magnificent Udaipur and Kumbhalgarh tour is built around that overnight. Travellers heading on to Jodhpur can do this loop as a transfer day instead, as our Udaipur to Jodhpur road guide explains.
Day 3: the lakes, Shilpgram, Eklingji and the Monsoon Palace
Morning (09:00–12:00): start at Saheliyon ki Bari, the 18th-century garden of fountains built for the queen’s companions (a small state ticket; check the rate at the gate). Continue to Fateh Sagar Lake, five minutes north, for a boat to Nehru Park island if the water level allows, then climb Moti Magri for the Maharana Pratap memorial and a view over the lake. Shilpgram, 3 km west of Fateh Sagar, is the rural arts complex with huts from four states and craft demonstrations; it is quiet except during the December Shilpgram Utsav fair.
Afternoon (13:00–16:00): drive 22 km north to Eklingji, the 108-shrine Shiva temple complex that is the family deity of the Mewar rulers; it keeps strict darshan hours in several slots through the day and shuts in between, so ask your hotel for the current timings before setting out. Photography is not allowed inside. On the way back, Nagda’s 10th-century Sahastra Bahu temples sit beside a small lake a kilometre off the road and are rarely crowded. If you have time, the Vintage and Classic Car Collection near the Garden Hotel in town is a half-hour diversion.
Evening (16:30–19:00): finish at Sajjangarh, the Monsoon Palace on the hill west of the city. Private cars stop at the sanctuary gate and a shuttle takes you up; the palace itself is empty, but the view of the five lakes at sunset is why you came. Go back down for a last dinner, and if you still have energy, the Karni Mata ropeway from Doodh Talai gives a night view over Pichola.
How do you reach Udaipur and get around?
By train from Delhi: the 12963 Mewar Express (Hazrat Nizamuddin 18:25 → Udaipur City 07:30, daily) and the 20473 Chetak Express (Delhi Sarai Rohilla 19:40 → Udaipur City 07:48, daily) are both comfortable overnight options; book 2A or 3A on IRCTC 60 days out (ConfirmTkt, checked 30 October 2026). From Jaipur: about 395 km by road via Chittorgarh, 6.5–7 hours, or several day and overnight trains; our Jaipur to Udaipur guide has the options. From Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Bangalore: fly to Dabok, or take the overnight trains from Ahmedabad (about 5–6 hours on the faster services). Our guide to Indian train classes explains the classes.
Around town: Day 1 is on foot and by boat. Days 2 and 3 need a car; a sedan with driver for the Kumbhalgarh–Ranakpur day is about ₹3,000–₹4,000 as a day-return in our experience, and a local 8-hour car for Day 3 about ₹2,000–₹3,000. Autos and app cabs cover short hops; the old city lanes are too narrow for cars, so expect to be dropped at a gate and walk the last few hundred metres.
Where should you stay in Udaipur?
- Lal Ghat and Gangaur Ghat (old city): walkable to City Palace, boats and the dance show; havelis with rooftop restaurants from about ₹2,500. The lake-view premium is real: the same room facing the lane can be 30–40% cheaper.
- Hanuman Ghat and Ambrai Ghat (west bank): quieter, with the postcard view of the palace across the water; a footbridge connects to the old city.
- Fateh Sagar and Rani Road: modern hotels, easier parking, 10 minutes from the old city.
- Palace and heritage hotels: the Taj Lake Palace on its island, Oberoi Udaivilas and the Leela on the west shore, and the Shiv Niwas and Fateh Prakash inside the City Palace complex are the well-known names; we mention them as reference points only.
What does 3 days in Udaipur cost?
Per person for two sharing, in the October–March season: about ₹8,000–₹10,000 on a budget (guesthouse, autos, a shared taxi to Kumbhalgarh), ₹12,000–₹16,000 standard (three-star haveli, private car on Days 2 and 3, boat, dance show) and ₹25,000 upwards with heritage hotels. Entry fees for everything in this plan come to roughly ₹600–₹900 per person including the boat. Our Rajasthan trip cost guide has the full hotel-band breakdown, and our Udaipur 2 nights 3 days package is quoted on request for your dates. If Udaipur is one stop on a longer route, our Rajasthan 5-day plan shows how it links with Jaipur and Pushkar.
