Updated: November 2026
Short answer: A 3-day Shimla trip from Delhi costs roughly ₹5,500–7,600 per person on a budget (bus, budget room shared by two, one shared taxi day) and roughly ₹10,500–18,000 per person mid-range (private car, 3-star hotel, paid sightseeing). From Chandigarh, take ₹1,500–4,000 off those figures because the drive is only about 3 hours. The biggest swings come from the month (May–June and Christmas–New Year cost the most), how you travel up, and the hotel class. If you want hotel, car and meals in one price, our Shimla–Manali tour starts from ₹12,499 per person from Chandigarh and ₹14,499 from Delhi (5 nights, twin sharing, off-season).

What does a 3-day Shimla trip cost in total?
Here is how the numbers add up per person, for two people sharing a room, travelling from Delhi. Food is ₹500 a day on the budget plan; sightseeing includes the Jakhu ropeway, Viceregal Lodge and the State Museum.
| Item | Budget plan | Mid-range plan |
|---|---|---|
| Getting there and back | Bus both ways: ₹1,080–2,600 | Private sedan both ways (₹5,199 each way, shared by two): about ₹5,200 |
| 2 nights stay | Budget room ₹1,000–1,500 a night, shared: ₹1,000–1,500 | 3-star room; rates vary widely with the season |
| Food, 3 days | About ₹1,500 | Higher: cafe and hotel-restaurant meals |
| Local taxi day (Kufri, Fagu, Mashobra) | ₹2,500 sedan shared by two: ₹1,250 | Included in the private car days |
| Sightseeing fees | About ₹720–750 | About ₹720–750 plus extras (horse rides, skating) |
| Approx. total per person | ₹5,500–7,600 | ₹10,500–18,000 (Himachal mid-range runs about ₹3,500–6,000 per person per day) |
From Chandigarh the maths changes mainly in transport: a Chandigarh–Shimla sedan from ₹2,499 each way, shared by two, is about ₹2,500 per person return, and a bus is cheaper still. For a family of four, an Ertiga or Innova Crysta split four ways is often cheaper per head than two couples taking separate sedans.
How does the season change the cost?
| Period | What happens to prices |
|---|---|
| Mid-March to June | Peak family season; hotels fill on weekends and the Kalka–Shimla road is slow. Our package rates for 15 March–30 June are 25% above off-season. |
| July to September | Monsoon; low hotel rates, but landslides can delay the drive. |
| October | Peak again (Dussehra and Diwali holidays); our October package rates are 25% above off-season. |
| November to 19 December | Off-season rates; cold, clear and often the best value. |
| 20 December to 5 January | The most expensive fortnight: Christmas, New Year and the chance of snow. Our package rates are 25% higher, and many hotels raise prices far more than that. |
| 6 January to mid-March | Off-season rates outside long weekends; the best snow chances at Kufri and Narkanda are in January. |
Suzu off-season windows are 1 July–30 September, 1 November–19 December and 6 January–14 March, as printed on our package pages. Read Shimla in December, Shimla in January and best time to visit Shimla before you lock dates. If you would rather have one price for everything, our Shimla tour packages from Delhi include the car, hotels, breakfast and dinner.
Is a package cheaper than planning Shimla yourself?
For a solo backpacker, no: a bus, a dorm bed and walking will always be cheaper. For couples and families who want a private car, a decent hotel and meals, a package is usually similar in price and saves the work of matching hotel nights, car days and sightseeing. Our options:
- Shimla Manali tour from Chandigarh (5N/6D): from ₹12,499 per person, Deluxe; ₹14,749 Super Deluxe; ₹16,874 Luxury (twin sharing, off-season).
- Shimla Manali tour from Delhi (6D/5N): from ₹14,499 per person (twin sharing, Deluxe, off-season).
- Chandigarh Shimla tour (3N/4D) with Kufri and Mall Road: price on quote for your dates.
If you are adding Manali, see Manali trip cost and Shimla Manali itinerary; for the state as a whole, Himachal trip cost. What to see is in our Shimla tourist places guide.
What are the hidden costs in Shimla?
- Parking and restricted roads. The Mall and the Ridge are closed to cars; private vehicles pay to park, and driving on Shimla’s sealed and restricted roads needs a district permit.
- Peak-date surcharges on hotels over Christmas–New Year and long weekends.
- Horse rides and snow activities at Kufri, priced on the spot: agree the full price and route before you start.
- Toy train. The Kalka–Shimla line was shut at the Kalka end until 30 November 2026 as of late October; check our toy train status page before you budget for it.
- GST on hotel rooms and packages where it applies.
What this means for your trip
- Two nights is enough for Shimla and Kufri; add a third night for Chail or Narkanda.
- Travel November–mid-December or after 6 January for the best value.
- From Delhi, the Kalka Shatabdi plus a taxi is a comfortable middle path between a bus and a full car hire.
- Four people sharing one car brings the per-person cost down sharply.
