How do you get from Delhi to Shimla?
Shimla is about 345 km from Delhi. The first 250 km to Chandigarh is flat highway (NH-44 via Panipat, Karnal and Ambala); the last stretch climbs NH-5 through Kalka, Dharampur and Solan. That is why every option is either a long car day or “plains by train, hills by road”.

The toy train in November 2026: monsoon damage near Bridge No. 57, between Taksal and Gumman, made Northern Railway cancel ten regular Kalka–Shimla trains until 30 November 2026. One train runs each way between Dharampur and Shimla. If the ride matters to you, we drop you at Dharampur station and the car carries your bags up to Shimla. The Shimla to Manali day is a full day whichever way you go. Starting in Chandigarh removes the two longest plains drives, which is why the Chandigarh version is cheaper.

Two things to know: cars cannot drive on Shimla’s Mall Road, so the driver drops you at the nearest road point; and the AC is switched off on hill climbs, as stated in every Himachal package policy.
