Road tips for Kalka to Shimla
Toy train from Kalka is shut until 30 Nov 2026
Northern Railway cancelled the Kalka–Shimla trains until 30 November 2026 to rebuild a washed-out stretch of track; only one train a day each way runs between Dharampur and Shimla. Ride our car to Dharampur (about an hour), board there, and the same car carries your bags up to Shimla. Latest: Kalka–Shimla toy train status.
Himachal entry fee
Cars registered outside Himachal pay an entry fee at the state barrier (₹100 a day for passenger vehicles up to 12 seats in 2026–27; commercial and larger vehicles pay more). It is added to your quote at actuals. Details: Himachal entry tax & permits 2026.
Chakki Mod in the monsoon
The stretch between Parwanoo and Dharampur near Chakki Mod is the slide-prone part of this road; in June 2025 debris cut traffic to one lane for hours. From July to August we watch the advisories and adjust your start time.
Beat the Parwanoo queue
Friday evenings, Sunday afternoons and long weekends bring slow traffic at Parwanoo and the Shimla entry. An early-morning start, straight off an overnight train, usually avoids both.
Shimla’s car-free core
The Mall, the Ridge and several lanes around them are closed to cars. We drop at the nearest allowed point and help find a porter if your hotel is uphill.
Snow months need a plan
From mid-December to February roads above Shimla and Manali can close after fresh snow. Drivers carry chains; sometimes the last stretch is done in a local 4×4. We confirm the day before.

Questions travellers ask
What is the taxi fare from Kalka to Shimla?
One-way fares start around ₹2,199 for a hatchback, ₹2,499 for a sedan, ₹3,299 for an Ertiga, ₹3,799 for a Kia Carens and ₹4,499 for an Innova Crysta. A 12-seater Tempo Traveller starts around ₹7,499. Tolls, parking and the Himachal entry fee are extra at actuals.
How far is Shimla from Kalka by road?
About 85–90 km on the NH5 via Parwanoo, Dharampur, Solan and Kandaghat. A taxi takes 2.5–3 hours; the toy train covers 96 km of track and takes about 5–6 hours.
Is the toy train running from Kalka to Shimla now?
Not from Kalka. Under Northern Railway’s order of 30 September 2026, the Kalka–Shimla trains are cancelled until 30 November 2026 for track repairs, and one train each way runs between Dharampur and Shimla. We can drive you from Kalka to Dharampur for that train and meet you in Shimla. Check NTES or 139 before you travel.
Can the driver pick us up at Kalka railway station?
Yes. Share your train number and coach; the driver tracks the train and waits at the station exit, including for early-morning arrivals.
Is the Shimla to Kalka taxi fare the same?
Yes, the same one-way fares apply from any Shimla hotel down to Kalka station, and we time the drop to your train with a buffer for traffic at Parwanoo.
Can we ride the toy train and send our luggage by cab?
Yes. Ride the train one way and the car carries your bags and meets you at the other end. Tell us the train you are booked on and we quote one fare.
Can we stop at Kasauli or Chail on the way?
Yes. Kasauli is a short detour from Dharampur and Chail about 30 km from Kandaghat. Each adds 2–3 hours; tell us when you book and we fold it into one fare.
Is the Kalka–Shimla road open in winter?
Usually, yes — this lower road rarely closes. After fresh snow, the roads inside and above Shimla (towards Kufri and Narkanda) can be slow or shut; from mid-December to February we confirm conditions the day before.
